Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has gone to the US, after he was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. He is undergoing a surgery and he’s been advised rest for two weeks. During the period of Jaitley's indisposition, Goyal will hold these portfolios in addition to his existing portfolios. Jaitley will be designated as Minister without portfolio until his indisposition.

This is the second time Goyal has been assigned the finance ministry. He had held interim charge when Jaitley underwent a kidney transplant in May 2018. Goyal had in his first stint as interim finance minister announced Project Sashakt, a five-pronged strategy to deal with the bad loan burden of state-owned banks.
