National Current Affairs
  • India's National Anthem 'Jana Gana Mana' was adopted as the national anthem of India on this day (January 24) in the year 1950, by the Constituent Assembly. 
    • Written and composed by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, the anthem spreads the message of pluralism.
    • The official duration of Jana Gana Man is is 52 seconds. 
    • Note : Further, 'Vande Mataram', written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, was adopted as the national song of India on the same day.
  • On this day in 1950, Dr Rajendra Prasad was unanimously elected as the first President of the Republic of India, by the Constituent Assembly. 
    • Note : India has so far had 13 Presidents, with Prasad being the only one to have held the office twice.
  • Today is 10th National Girl Child Day.
    • This day has been started as a national girls development mission by the Government of India. 
    • This mission raises the awareness among people all over the country about the importance of girl’s promotion. 
    • It enhances the meaningful contribution of the girls in decision making processes through the active support of the parents and other community members.
    • Theme of National Girl Child Day 2019 :  'Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow'.
  • For the first time, 4 veterans from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's Indian National Army, all aged between 95 and 100, will take part in the Republic Day parade
    • A contingent of the Gorkha Brigade will take part in the parade and the Army's M777 ultra-light howitzers and the K-9 Vajra artillery guns will be showcased for the first time.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against former ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar and Videocon Group MD Venugopal Dhoot in connection with alleged irregularities in the ₹3,250-crore Videocon loan case.
  • Mumbai's Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has become India's only port to be among the top 30 global container ports as per a Lloyds Report. 
    • JNPT notched up five spots to be 28th on the list. 
  • The Cabinet today approved the creation of National Bench of the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT)
    • The tribunal is the forum of second appeal in GST laws and the first common forum of dispute resolution between Centre and states. 
    • It'll be presided over by a President and comprise one technical member each from the Centre and states.
MOUs & Agreements
  • To "help Pakistan achieve financial stability and overcome economic challenges", the State Bank of Pakistan and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development signed an agreement today.
    • According to this agreement, Pakistan is going to get $3 billion in bailout package from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Books & Authors
  • Indian artistic gymnast Dipa Karmakar's biography titled "The Small Wonder", was launched today by the legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar in Mumbai. 
    • The book, which comes with inputs from her coach Bishweshwar Nandi, chronicles the life of Karmakar from Agartala to becoming a world-famous gymnast, who finished fourth in the finals of the vault event at the Rio Olympics back in 2016.
    • This book has been co-authored by journalist Digvijay Singh Deo.
Awards & Honors
  • India’s highest peacetime gallantry medal, the Ashoka Chakra, will be awarded posthumously to Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani, who laid down his life during an anti-terror operation at Batagund village in J&K’s Shopian in November last year.
    • Important Note : The two-time winner of the Sena Medal was once an Ikhwan (a terrorist who surrenders and becomes involved in counter-insurgency operations) and surrendered before the Army and went onto become a highly decorated soldier.
New Appointments
  • A week ahead of the February 1st Interim Budget Presentation, the Union Minister of Railways and Coal, Piyush Goyal, has been temporarily given the additional charge of the Ministry of Finance and Corporate Affairs, held by Arun Jaitley.
    • Note : Arun Jaitley has gone to the US, after he was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. He is undergoing a surgery and he’s been advised rest for two weeks. 
  • Deutsche Bank's India Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ravneet Singh Gill will replace Rana Kapoor as YES Bank's Managing Director and CEO.
  • Venezuela opposition leader Juan Guaidó today declared himself as the country's interim President
    • This came amid protests against Nicolás Maduro, who was sworn in as the Venezuelan President for the second time earlier this month. 
  • Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has joined active politics after being appointed as the Congress General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh East by party President and her brother Rahul Gandhi. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • India captain Virat Kohli (10,430 runs in 212 innings) has become the 10th highest ODI run-getter, achieving the feat during his 45-run knock against New Zealand in the first ODI today. 
    • With this, Kohli overtook ex-Windies captain Brian Lara, who scored 10,405 runs in 289 ODI innings.
