  • India ranked 80th in recently released Global Talent Competitive Index (GTCI) 2019.
    • This Index was released on the first day of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2019.
    • It was prepared by the INSEAD business school in partnership with Tata Communications and Adecco Group.
    • The Global Talent Competitive Index measures how countries and cities grow, attract and retain talent, ranking 125 countries and 114 cities across all groups of income and levels of development.

  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) has listed out the Top 10 global health threats for 2019, ranging from vaccine-preventable diseases to drug-resistant infections, from obesity and physical inactivity to cancer and environmental diseases like heart and lung problems. 
    • According to the WHO, unless steps are taken to address these threats millions of lives are at risk.

      5. Antimicrobial resistance

  • British Prime Minister Theresa May today unveiled her Brexit 'Plan B' after the original deal was rejected by the Parliament last week. 
    • May ruled out a 2nd Brexit referendum and claimed that it is impossible for the government to rule out no-deal Brexit. 
    • The plan will be put to vote by the Parliament on January 29.
National Current Affairs
  • PM Narendra Modi today inaugurated the Subhas Chandra Bose Museum at Red Fort to mark the leader's 122nd birth anniversary.
    • The museum will showcase unknown and interesting facts about Netaji from his childhood days to documenting the Indian National Army trials.
    • The museum showcases various artefacts related to Netaji including the wooden chair and sword used by the leader.
  • Congress-led Rajasthan government today announced that it has decided to reverse name of Atal Seva Kendra, help centres at village panchayat level, to Rajiv Gandhi Seva Kendra, which was its original name. 
  • Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shipping and Water Resources Nitin Gadkari has revealed plans to take the backwaters of the Godavari up to the Cauvery river in Tamil Nadu through Krishna and Penna using steel pipes instead of developing canals en route as suggested by a non-resident engineer from Andhra Pradesh. 
    • By doing so, wastage of water from canals could be prevented and overall cost reduced.
    • Note : The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for linking the Godavari and Cauvery rivers at a cost of Rs.60,000 crore is ready and will be submitted to the cabinet soon.
  • Bihar government has decided to bring a separate Bill in the forthcoming budget session commencing from February 11 to implement 10 per cent quota in jobs and education for weaker sections in general category.
  • The 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PBD) will culminate with the valedictory address of President Ram Nath Kovind today evening.
    • The President will also confer the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards to 30 recipients from all over the world. 
    • More than 5000 NRI are participating in the Pravasi Bharatiya Sammelan.
    • Note : For the 1st time, the three day long convention is being organized in Varanasi, the cultural and spiritual capital of India. 
    • Theme of PBD Convention 2019 : "Role of Indian Diaspora in building New India".
Science & Technology
  • The countdown for India's first satellite launch for the year 2019 is set to begin this evening.
    • The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), will launch a students satellite Kalamsat and an imaging satellite Microsat-R, tomorrow.
    • The national space agency's workhorse rocket PSLV C44 will launch them from the first launchpad at Satish Dhawan Space Center at Sriharikota, some 90 kilometers off Chennai.
    • Note : This is the 1st time the launch vehicle would have a flight with just two strap-on motors, called the DL mode.
  • The European Space Agency has signed a contract with rocket maker ArianeGroup with plans to mine the Moon to extract regolith before 2025. 
    •  Launch vehicle Ariane 64 will be used to carry equipment needed for Moon landing.
  • The world's longest 3D-printed concrete pedestrian bridge, which is 26.3 metre-long and 3.6-metre-wide, opened in Shanghai (China). 
    • The bridge is made out of 44 hollowed-out 3D printed concrete blocks which were printed by two robotic arms in a span of 19 days. 
Awards & Honors
  • US-based Indian poet Ranjani Murali received the ‘Woman’s Voice Award’ at the Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival (AKLF). 
    • The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh apart from a citation.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • India's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) today announced that Hitachi Payment Services has agreed to pick up 26% stake in its card acceptance and digital payment platform SBI Payment Services
    • After this transaction completes, SBI's shareholding in its payments arm will reduce to 74%.
  • The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has approved the merger of Telecom operator Bharti Airtel with loss-making telecom firm Tata Teleservices
    • As part of the agreement, Airtel will absorb Tata consumer mobile business operations in 19 telecom circles. 
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has initiated two surveys to examine the current situation including the job scenario in India’s manufacturing, services and infrastructure sectors. They are :
    • Industrial Outlook Survey (IOS)
      • This survey will be undertaken by Hansa Research Group Pvt Ltd.
      • This survey is based on qualitative responses on a set of indicators pertaining to demand conditions, financial conditions, employment conditions and the price situation. 
      • It will provide useful insight into the performance of the manufacturing sector.
    • Services and Infrastructure Outlook Survey (SIOS)
      • This survey will be undertaken by Spectrum Planning India Ltd.
      • This survey seeks an assessment of the business situation for the current quarter (January-March 2019) from selected companies in the services and infrastructure sectors in India, and their outlook for the ensuing quarter (April-June 2019).
New Appointments
  • Kerala's oldest student, Karthiyani Amma (97), has been appointed as the Commonwealth of Learning Goodwill Ambassador
    • Note : Amma, who was the oldest woman to have appeared for the Kerala Literacy Mission's Aksharalaksham (Million Letters) literacy exam, had scored 98 out of 100 marks. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • India defeated New Zealand by eight wickets (DLS) in the first ODI of the five-match series at Napier today. 
    • This victory was India's first in an ODI against New Zealand in New Zealand after nearly 10 years.
