2018 Cincinnati Masters Winners List

The Cincinnati Masters tennis tournament for the year 2018 was recently held at Lindner Family Tennis Center, Mason, Ohio, United States. This tournament is being sponsored by the Western & Southern Financial Group, so it also called as the Western & Southern Open. This is the oldest tennis tournament in the United States played in its original city. The 2018 edition is the 117th in Men's category and 90th in Women's category. World number six Novak Djokovic defeated world number two Roger Federer to win the Men's singles title. With this, he became the first man to claim all nine ATP Masters 1000 titles. The women's singles title was won by Netherlands' Kiki Bertens by defeating Simona Halep of Romania. Here is the complete winners list of 2018 Cincinnati Masters.

      • The day designated by UNESCO to memorialize the transatlantic slave trade.
    • 26th August observed as the Women's Equality Day.
      • This day commemorates the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment (Amendment XIX) to the United States Constitution, which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex.
      • This day was first celebrated in 1973 and is proclaimed each year by the United States President.
    • 29th August was observed as the International Day Against Nuclear Tests.
      • Aim :  To raise awareness about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions.

    • The Union Ministry of Agriculture has written to United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) proposing declaration of year 2019 as “International Year of Millets
      • It has requested inclusion of this proposal in agenda of 26th Committee on Agriculture (COAG) meeting, scheduled to be held in October 2018 in Rome (Italy)

    • Insurance regulator Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDAI) today notified insurance companies asking them to cover medical treatment for mental illnesses on the same basis as it is available for treatment of physical illnesses. 
      • The order is applicable to all insurance companies in India with immediate effect. 
      • Note : This order comes three months after the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 came into force on May 29.

    3 Time Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee Passed Away

    Former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee (25th December 1924 - 16th August 2018) passed away. He is one of the most respected politicians in India. He was the 10th Prime Minister of India. A senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he was the first non-Indian National Congress Prime Minister to serve a full five-year term. He served as the Prime Minister of India for three times (13 days in 1996, 11 months during 1998-99, Full term during 1999-2004).

    During his second term as prime minister, Vajpayee ordered nuclear tests in May 1998 in a strategic masterstroke to blunt Pakistan’s nuclear ambitions. He followed this up with peace overtures to Pakistan, riding on the first direct bus from India to Pakistan in February 1999.

    He is the only parliamentarian to have been elected from four different states at different times. He was elected to the Parliament from Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha for two terms and that of the Lok Sabha for ten terms.

    He is also famous as a writer of a number of well-known books and poetry collections.

    2018 Rogers Cup / Canadian Open Winners List

    The Rogers Cup Tennis Tournament (also known as Canadian Open) for the year 2018 was held during 6th to 12th August 2018 at Canada. It was the 138th edition for Men and 127th edition for Women. The men's event was held at the Aviva Centre in Toronto and the women's event was held at the IGA Stadium in Montréal. This is the 3rd oldest tennis tournament in the world (1st is Wimbledon and 2nd is US Open). Here is the complete winners list.

    State Bank of India (SBI) ranked as India's most Patriotic Brand

    India's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has emerged as India's most patriotic brand, a survey conducted by UK-based online market research and data analytics firm YouGov revealed today. Around 16 percent of the respondents named SBI as the most patriotic brand. The bank was followed by Tata Motors and Patanjali with 8% votes each.

    In terms of sectors, the Financial sector topped the chart of the most patriotic brands with two leading names State Bank of India (SBI) and Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), followed by Auto, Consumer Goods, Food and Telecom sectors.

    In terms of food brands, Amul grabbed the top slot with one-third Indians considering it, followed by Patanjali.

    International Current Affairs
    • Today (13th August) is International Lefthanders Day.
      • This day was first observed on the 13th of August, in the year 1976.
      • People observe this day to promote awareness of the inconveniences faced by left-handers in a predominantly right-handed world.
    • The North and South Koreas  today agreed to hold an inter-Korean summit in North's capital Pyongyang in September 2018. 
      • The leaders of the two countries had first met in April and agreed to sign a peace treaty to end the 65-year-long Korean War.
    • A special meeting of Senior Officials of the Bay of Bengal Initiatives for Multi-Sectoral, Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) was held in Kathmandu (Nepal) today.
      • The meeting was organised as part of preparations for the 4th BIMSTEC Summit, which is going to be held in Kathmandu during 30th & 31st August 2018.
      • Senior officers from all member states and Secretary General of BIMSTEC attended the meeting.
      • A wide range of issues including BIMSTEC structure, mechanisms and procedures, enhancing visibility of BIMSTEC, collaboration with other regional and international organisations with similar aims and purposes and establishment of a BIMSTEC Development Fund were discussed in the meeting.  
      • About BIMSTEC :
      • BIMSTEC is a regional economic bloc comprising 7 member states lying in the littoral and adjacent areas of the Bay of Bengal constituting a contiguous regional unity.
      • The group was formed in 1997 and it brings together Bangladesh, Bhutan India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand
      • Nepal is the current chair of BIMSTEC.
    • India has handed over 404 houses built for Indian-origin people in Sri Lanka’s tea plantation areas at Dunsinane Estate in Nuwara Eliya city. 
      • This is first lot of houses built under Indian Housing Project in Plantation Areas in Sri Lanka.
      • Note : With grant of over US $350 million, it is India’s largest assistance project in any country.

    • Pune (Maharashtra) has emerged as the number one city in the Ease of Living Index 2018 released by the government of India today. 
      • The Index was launched by Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri
      • The Ease of Living Index help cities assess their liveability in relation to global and national benchmarks.

      • It is celebrated in different countries on varying dates.
    • The Union Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal today announced a 50% reservation for women in the upcoming recruitment of up to 10,000 Railway Police Force jawans
      • He also announced that 13,000 jobs are also coming up in Railways for which a Computer-Based Test will be conducted and no interviews will be taken.
    • Union Civil Aviation Ministry has given in-principle approval to set up Water Aerodromes (a small airport or airfield for sea planes) in India. 
      • It has identified five states for development of water aerodromes. They are : 
        • Odisha, 
        • Gujarat, 
        • Maharashtra,
        • Andhra Pradesh 
        • Assam
    Science & Technology
    • The Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan today inaugurated the National Wildlife Genetic Resource Bank in Hyderabad (Telanagana)
      • It is India’s first genetic resource bank where genetic material will be stored for posterity which will further the cause of conservation of endangered and protected animals.
    • The lander of India's second lunar exploration mission 'Chandrayaan-2', scheduled for next year, will be named 'Vikram' in honour of ISRO Founder Vikram Sarabhai.
    • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is announced it plans to launch ISRO TV, a TV channel to promote scientific temper among people and conduct training camps for school students.
    Deaths
    • Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee (89) passed away.
      • Chatterjee, who has served for over four decades in active politics, had served as the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2004 to 2009.
    Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
    • The Rrupee hit an all-time low of 69.62 against the US dollar today.
      • The ongoing financial crisis in Turkey and weakness in other emerging market currencies are the reasons for this decline. 
    New Appointments
    • Justice Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani today sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
      • With this, she became the third woman appointed to the position.
    Sports Current Affairs
    • Argentine professional footballer Lionel Messi today became the most decorated player in Barcelona's history, by winning his 33rd trophy for the club as defending La Liga champions beat Sevilla to win their 13th Spanish Super Cup today. 
      • Note : This match was also Messi's first as club's first captain. 
    • The 2018 Vietnam Open badminton tournament recently held at Nguyen Du Cultrual Sports Club in Vietnam. 
      • Indian shuttler Ajay Jayaram finished as runner-up in the men's singles event by losing the final to Indonesian shuttler Shesar Hiren Rhustavito.
