International Current Affairs
  • South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is on a 2-day visit to India.
    • He met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and both leaders held talks on bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest.
    • Important Points Note
      • Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa is the Chief Guest at the 70th Indian Republic Day Parade
      • He is the 2nd President of South Africa after Nelson Mandela to be the Chief Guest at the parade.
  • Maldivian Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi is on a visit to India
    • During this visit, she met Indian Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and both leaders
      agreed to continue their traditionally close cooperation on issues of maritime security, counter-terrorism and medical cooperation. 
    • Mariya will witness the 70th Republic Day Parade at Rajpath.
National Current Affairs
  • Today is 9th National Voters Day.
    • The date (25th January) was declared as the National Voters' Day in the year 2011 as the Election Commission of India was founded on this day in the year 1950.
    • The day aims at increasing the enrolment of voters, especially encourage participation of newly eligible young voters and ensure universal adult franchise.
    • Theme of National Voters Day 2019 :  “No Voter to be left behind
  • The government today announced that the new 10% quota for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in the general category will be applicable to all central government posts from 1st February 2019.
  • The Supreme Court today refused to stay the implementation of 10% reservation in jobs and education for economically weaker section of the general category. 
    • However, the court said it will examine the validity of the reservation. 
  • The Goa Cabinet has approved a proposal to impose a fine of ₹2,000 on people who drink alcohol or cook in public and a fine of ₹10,000 if a group of people is doing so. 
    • Offenders who do not pay the fine will face up to three months' imprisonment. 
  • The Maharashtra government today announced disbursement of ₹2,900 crore for relief measures in drought-affected areas of the state. 
    • 151 tehsils, 268 mandals, 923 villages have been declared drought affected in the state.
  • Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik today approved the J&K Reservation Act (Amendment) Bill, 2014.
    • This bill grants reservation Pahari community. 
  • Indian Navy undertook a 2 day exercise titled Sea Vigil.
    • The 1st of its kind multi-agency drill covers the entire 7,516 km-long Indian coastline and exclusive economic zone and involves 13 coastal states and Union Territories to check the efficacy of maritime security and surveillance- Sea Vigil.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched the Pravasi Teerth Darshan Yojana under which a group of Indian diaspora will be taken on a government-sponsored tour of religious places in India twice a year.
    • They will be taken to religious places of all major religions in India and the government will bear all the expenses including the airfare from their country of residence.
    • All people of Indian-origin aged 45 to 65 can apply and a group will be selected out of them with first preference given to people from 'Girmitiya countries' such as Mauritius, Fiji, Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica.

  • The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has booked former Air India Chairman and Managing Director Arvind Jadhav for allegedly violating procedures during promotions.
Science & Technology
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) today successfully launched a small communication student-made satellite Kalamsat-V2 and imaging satellite Microsat-R through its PSLV-C44 into the intended orbit. 
    • The launch took place from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota
    • About Kalamsat - V2
      • The satellite is named after former president and Indian scientist Dr APJ Abdul Kalam
      • The 10-cm cube satellite has a life span of two months and weighs about 1.2 kg.
      • It is the lightest satellite to be ever built and launched into orbit and it is also Isro’s first launch of a satellite built by a private firm.
  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully test-fired Barak 8 LRSAM (Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile) from naval warship INS Chennai off the coast of Odisha.
    • The Barak 8 LRSAM missile defence system has been jointly developed by DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries.
  • Saudi Arabia, which does not currently possess nuclear weapons, has built its 1st-known ballistic missile factory
    • The factory is reportedly in the same location as the al-Watah missile base which first became public in 2013.
  • Three months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi recounted the benefits of “camel milk”, the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF) has launched Amul Camel Milk in selected markets of Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad and Kutch in Gujarat.
    • Sourced from camel-breeders in Kutch district, the milk will be available in a 500 ml PET bottles and is priced at Rs 50.
Deaths
  • Famous Hindi writer and essayist, Krishna Sobti (94)  passed away. 
    • She had won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1980 for her novel 'Zindaginama' and was awarded the Jnanpith in 2017 for her contribution to Indian literature.
New Appointments
  • 59-year-old  Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah was elected as the new King of Malaysia by the members of the country's royal families. 
    • He replaces Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan, who stepped down earlier this month, making it the first abdication in Malaysia's history.
  • India's biggest airline IndiGo has appointed Ronojoy Dutta as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for a period of 5 years. 
    • He takes over from Co-founder and interim CEO Rahul Bhatia.
  • Media and entertainment company Reliance Entertainment elevated it's Chief Operating Officer, Shibasish Sarkar to the role of Group CEO for the content, digital and gaming segments.
  • Automobile manufacturer Renault today appointed tyre giant Michelin's CEO Jean-Dominique Senard as its new Chairman and Thierry BollorĂ© as CEO
