International Current Affairs
  • Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth has reached New Delhi today on a 7 day visit to India.
    • He will leave for Varanasi to take part in the Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas tomorrow.
    • Important Points to Note
      • India is Mauritius’ largest trading partner and has been the largest exporter of goods and services to Mauritius since 2007. 
      • Eight Indian Public Sector Enterprises are currently functioning in Mauritius.
    • Over the past 40 years, India has extended several Lines of Credit to Mauritius to assist in the development of its infrastructure, human resource, skills development and capacity building.
National Current Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India's first National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC) in Mumbai today. 
    • The ceremony was attended by several Bollywood actors and filmmakers, including Aamir Khan and Karan Johar.
  • Himachal Pradesh has approved 10% reservation in jobs and educational institutions for economically weaker sections in the general category, becoming the 4th state to do so. 
    • Gujarat, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh are the 3 other states to implement the reservation. 
  • For the 1st time in India, IIT Hyderabad is going to launch a full-fledged BTech program in Artificial Intelligence (AI) from the coming academic year 2019-20. 
    • With this, the institute has become India's first educational institution to do so, and likely the 3rd globally besides Carnegie Mellon University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 9th edition of Vibrant Gujarat Summit
    • The 3-day Vibrant Gujarat Summit will witness the participation of the heads of five countries Uzbekistan, Rwanda, Denmark, Czech Republic and Malta – and over 30,000 national and international delegates. 
    • A round-table interaction with the heads of global funds, ‘Africa Day’ and an MSME convention would also be held during the convention.
Science & Technology
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is going to launch a new satellite exclusively for the Home Ministry to help it further strengthen its frontiers with Pakistan and Bangladesh among others.
    • The move is part of recommendations made by a task force on the use of space technology in improving border management which have been accepted by Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
  • The indigenously designed and developed Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) of India has successfully carried out air-to-air missile firing.
    • Note : It is for the 1st time in India that a helicopter had carried out air to air missile engagement.
MOUs & Agreements
  • India and Uzbekistan today signed an agreement on importing uranium from the Central Asian nation following a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the sidelines of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2019.
    • The two countries also signed an agreement for a line of credit of $200 million from India for financing housing and social infrastructure projects in Uzbekistan.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Japan is going to give a loan of ₹3,420 crore to India for the construction of the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road (Phase 1) and for Japan-India cooperative actions towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in India. 
    • The programme to promote SDGs in India focusses especially on social development. The loan agreements were signed between the Government of India and Japan International Cooperation Agency.
  • According to the Global Economy Watch report by global consultancy firm PwC, India is likely to surpass the United Kingdom in the world's largest economy rankings in 2019. 
    • The report further projected a GDP growth of 1.6% for the UK and 7.6% for India in 2019.
  • With a mission of providing an enabling and innovative ecosystem for startups registered in the State and to make it a 'Global Innovation hub for startups' by 2023, Tamil Nadu government today released 'Startup & Innovation policy 2018-2023'.
    • Aim of Startup & Innovation policy 2018-2023 : A minimum of 1,00,000 high skilled job creation, direct and indirect, in the Startup ecosystem.
