International Current Affairs
  • The United States and Taliban agreed in principle to the framework of a peace deal that seeks to end the 17-year war in Afghanistan.
  • A Pakistani delegation  arrived in Jammu today to visit the Chenab river basin in Jammu and Kashmir for inspection. 
    • The Pakistan delegation is led by Pakistan's Indus Commissioner Syed Mohammad Mehar Ali Shah while Indian Indus Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Saxena  is leading the Indian delegation.
    • Note : Under the Indus Waters Treaty 1960 between India and Pakistan both the commissioners are mandated to inspect sites and works on both the sides of Indus basin in a block of five years.
National Current Affairs
  • The Swasth  Bharat Yatra, the world’s biggest cyclothon to push people to eat right, culminated in New Delhi today. 
    • The campaign was flagged-off on 16th October last year on the occasion of World Food Day. 
    • The yatra began from six different locations - Leh, Panaji, Thiruvananthapuram, Puducherry, Kolkata and Agartala on six different tracks in which more than ten thousand volunteer cyclists covered over twenty thousand kilometres spreading the message of ‘Eat Safe, Eat Healthy and Eat Fortified.
  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu today announced that his government will provide 100 units free power to Most Backward Classes (MCBs)
    • The government would also give aid of up to ₹15 lakh to backward classes for foreign education. 
  • Uttar Pradesh cabinet today approved construction of a 4 lane Ganga Express way connecting Prayagraj to Western UP which would cost about Rs 36,000 Crore. 
    • The Ganga Express way would be 600km long and could be expanded to 6 lanes in future. 
  • The 3rd Stock Taking Conference on Tiger Conservation is being held at New Delhi. 
    • In the conference, wide-ranging discussions shall be held on the status of the Global Tiger Recovery Program (GTRP) by all tiger range countries besides deliberations on combating wildlife trafficking.
    • This conference is being organised by the Global Tiger Forum which is an implementing arm of the Global Tiger Initiative Council (GTIC), in collaboration with the National Tiger Conservation Authority (Government of India), WWF, Wildlife Conservation Trust (WCT) and Wildlife Trust of India (WTI).
  • Based on the report of the MS Swaminathan Commission, the Delhi government is going to introduce Minimum Support Price (MSP) for farmers.
    • The move comes just months ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. 
    • There are about 20,000 farmers in the national capital.
Awards & Honors
  • The Tableau of ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) in the Republic Day Parade has won the 1st prize for its Kisan Gandhi theme
    • The tableau with the theme "Mishrit Kheti, Khushiyon Ki Kheti" portrayed Gandhi with goats and a cow and Kasturba engaged with charkha and caring animals.
    • Important Points to Note :  
      • Tripura bagged the 1st prize for the state tableau with the theme 'Empowering Rural Economy the Gandhian Way'.
      • Tableau from Jammu and Kashmir was adjudged the 2nd.
      • Punjab won the 3rd prize.
    • Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman gave away the prizes.
    • A total of 22 tableaux were displayed on the 70th Republic Day parade. Of which, 16 were from States and Union Territories, six from various central ministries and departments.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Dubai International Airport has retained its position as the world's busiest airport for international travel for the 5th consecutive year in 2018. 
    • Passenger traffic at the airport rose to over 8.9 crore in 2018. 
    • Note : India remained the biggest source of traffic, accounting for more than 1.2 crore passengers.
  • To put pressure on President Nicolas Maduro to cede power to the opposition, the United States today imposed sanctions on Venezuela's state-owned oil company, PDVSA.
    • The sanctions will freeze any assets the firm may have in US.
    • The sanctions come just days after the US and several European countries refused to recognise Maduro as Venezuela's legitimate president  and instead recognised opposition leader Juan Guaido as the interim president.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Human Resources Development Ministry today signed an agreement with Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for India’s Participation in Programme for International Student Assessment- PISA 2021.  
    • PISA is a triennial international survey  which aims to evaluate the education system worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students. 
    • Learnings from participation in PISA will help introduce competency based examination reforms in the school system.

  • India and China have signed the protocol for exports of Indian tobacco leaves to China
    • Quality tobacco on par with international standards is available in India at competitive prices and there is a good potential for export of Indian tobacco to China.
  • Syria has signed a long-term economic cooperation deal with Iran
    • Both sides also signed agreements to expand the ports in Latakia and Tartus.
Deaths
  • Former Defence Minister George Fernandes (88) passed away.
    • He also served as the Railways Minister in former Prime Minister VP Singh's governmen.
    • He was known as the ‘rebel leader’ during the infamous emergency era who took on Indira Gandhi and called her a ‘congenital liar’.
    • He was accused and later cleared of the Rs 24,000 crore coffin scam
New Appointments
  • Suman Kumari has become the 1st Hindu woman to have been appointed as a civil judge in Pakistan after passing an examination for induction of judicial officers.
    • Kumari, who hails from Qambar-Shahdadkot, will serve in her native district. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • Nagaland today got its 1st Astro Turf Football Pitch at Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima on the occasion of 100th Birth Anniversary of the legendary footballer, Dr. T. Ao (Talimeren Ao).
    • The project was conceived in the year 2013-14 with a total cost of 498 lakh rupees. 
    • The Astro turf has been installed following specifications and norms of FIFA. 
    • The size of the play field is 105x66 meters. 
    • Inaugurated by : Neiphiu Rio (Nagaland Chief Minister)
