RBI cancels licenses of over 100 NBFCs

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today announced that it has cancelled the licenses of as many as 35 Non Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs). The bank has cancelled the lincences of over 100 NBFCs in the month of July. From now onwards, these companies will not be able to do the business of a non-banking financial institution.

What are NBFCs ?

A Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) is a company registered under the Companies Act, 1956. NBFCs are financial institutions that offer various banking services, but do not have a banking license. Generally, these institutions are not allowed to take deposits from the public, which keeps them outside the scope of traditional oversight required under banking regulations. NBFCs can offer banking services such as loans and credit facilities, retirement planning, money markets, underwriting and merger activities.

Difference between Banks & NBFCs

NBFCs lend and make investments and hence their activities are similar to that of banks; however there are 3 major differences between Banks and NBFCs. They are :
  1. NBFC cannot accept demand deposits.
  2. NBFCs do not form part of the payment and settlement system and cannot issue cheques drawn on itself.
  3. Deposit insurance facility of Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation is not available to depositors of NBFCs, unlike in case of banks.

Why RBI Cancelled the licenses of NBFCs

Under the PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002), the NBFCs are required to furnish details about the identity of their clients, maintain records and furnish the information to the Financial Intelligence Unit.  Several NBFCs are facing closure for violation of these rules. Over 1,200 NBFCs flagged as "high risk" prone for not complying with a provision of the anti-money laundering law and in April RBI asked them to submit their records to the government be identified as legally compliant. If they fail, RBI will cancel their licenses.

Demonetization and it's Impact

One of the boldest moves in the Indian economy took place on 8th November, 2016 when the government declared that the existing notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 to be invalid from 8th November midnight. The high value notes were ceased to be legal tender and this act of striping the currency from its status of legal tender is known as Demonetisation. This was an important step by the government to curb black money and counterfeit notes in the economy.

Impacts on the Economy

  1. GDP Indian economy is largely cash driven. This is why the economy slowed down due to the less- availability of cash in cash-incentive sectors such as real estate and manufacturing. The businesses were not able to meet the cash requirements due to the restriction imposed by the government.

67, Pine Walk,
New Jerssy.
10th November, 20xx

First, there is no need to entertain alarmist views of the economic slow down affecting America. The protestors are none else but those who are trying to focus attention on increasing inequality generated by croxy capitalism. The alarmist view that the protestors are out to destroy American political and economic system is baseless.

3 Public Sector Banks (SBI, PNB & BOB) to introduce Performance-Linked Salary

Three Public Sector Banks (PSBs) State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Bank of Baroda (BoB) are planning to introduce Performance-Linked Salary Structure for the Senior Management.

According to a report by Business Standard, this is the first time that any Public Sector Bank will introduce such an incentive structure for its senior management, although an approval from the government shall be required for it.

"The bank is seriously thinking of introducing a system of performance-based incentives for officers above the general manager grade. There will be a component of fixed and variable pay. But it will evolve slowly," PNB Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Sunil Mehta announced.

State Bank of India (SBI) and Bank of Baroda (Bob) may also follow a similar model and are working on a compensation framework, sources said. However, the banks would need approval from the government for such a move.

While this is a first-of-its-kind move among PSBs, many private banks have already introduced a variable component in their salary structure.  For PSBs, the pay and allowances of different levels of employees are normally decided through bipartite settlements between the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), the bank’s management and trade union body United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU).

The proposed revised salary structure for senior employees comes in the aftermath of opposition from bank unions against six PSBs -- PNB, SBI, BoB, United Bank of India, Indian Bank and Oriental Bank of Commerce -- for restricting the latest wage negotiations up to scale-III officers or up to the senior manager level. The bank unions are reportedly not in favour of the performance-linked salary structure.
