International Current Affairs
  • Today (28th January) is Data Privacy Day/ Data Protection Day.
    • The purpose of this day is to raise awareness and promote privacy and data protection best practices.
  • Pakistan was named on this day (28th January) in the year 1933.
    • Muslim nationalist Choudhry Rahmat Ali, who is also known as the Founder of Pakistan National Movement, used 'Pakistan' in his pamphlet 'Now or Never' explaining reasons to establish a separate nation.
    • 'Pakistan' referred to the five northern units of India- 'P'unjab, North-West Frontier ('A'fghan) Province, 'K'ashmir, 'S'ind, and Baluchis'tan' (PAKSTAN).
  • Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has announced that his country is breaking off diplomatic ties with the United States after his American counterpart Donald Trump recognized Opposition leader Juan Guaido as the South American country’s interim President.
National Current Affairs
  • India's fastest indigenous train (Train18) which will run from Delhi to Varanasi has been named as 'Vande Bharat Express'.
    • The train will run between Delhi and Varanasi at a maximum speed of 160 km per hour. 
    • The 16-coach train was built in 18 months at a cost of ₹97 crore by the Integral Coach Factory, Chennai.

  • Freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai's (28 January 1865 – 17 November 1928) birth anniversary today.
    • He was popularly known as "Punjab Kesari" (Lion of Punjab)
    • He was part of the Lal Bal Pal trio (Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and Bipin Chandra Pal)
  • Union Minister Nitin Gadkari today inaugurated 4-lane, 5.1-kilometer long “Atal Setu”, the 3rd Cable bridge across river Mandovi in Panaji, Goa.
    • This is the third bridge across Mandovi River. 
    • This bridge would overcome the bottlenecks and curb traffic jams at Panaji Circle and Panaji entrance.
    •  About 66,000 vehicles use this route every day.
  • The government of Uttarakhand has obtained the permission to develop the Tulip garden over 50 hectares of forest land in Pithoragarh district at a cost of Rs 50 crore. 
    • It will be the 2nd Tulip garden in India after the one located in Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir).
    • The Tulip Garden will be developed by ONGC, under its corporate social responsibility programme in over 50 hectares of forest land near Chandak hilltop.
    • The site was selected under the 13 districts, 13 new destinations’ scheme, to attract more tourists to the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Ministry of Textiles will hold National Conclave on Technical Textiles tomorrow in Mumbai. 
    • The event will also be a curtain raiser for TechnoTex 2019
    • The conclave will be presided by Union Textiles Minister Smriti Zubin Irani.
    • Eminent panellists drawn from various Central Government departments, NITI Aayog, IITs and textile industry will participate in the conclave. 
    • The release of Harmonised System Nomenclature, HSN codes by Government of India for technical textiles will be one of the major highlights of the conclave. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated an integrated Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) refinery expansion complex in Kerala's Kochi and dedicated the ₹16,504-crore investment to the nation. 
    • The complex would transform Kochi Refinery as the largest state-run refinery in the country.
  • Union Finance Minister Piyush Goyal will meet the CEOs of Public Sector Banks in New Delhi today to take stock of banking sector and discuss ways to improve their financial health.
    • The meeting will review the credit flow to MSMEs, agriculture and retail sectors.
    • The meeting assumes significance as it comes just 3 days ahead of the Budget 2019-20
    • Note : Mr Goyal has been given additional charge of the Finance Ministry as Arun Jaitley is away to the US for treatment.
  • According to a recently released report by Crisil, Bihar has been ranked the Top state in terms of GSDP (Gross State Domestic Product) growth in financial year 2017-18.
    • The state has topped the list by clocking 11.3 percent GSDP growth in fiscal 2018. 
    • The second spot has been secured by Andhra Pradesh, whose GSDP growth in FY18 jumped to 11.2 percent. 
    • Gujarat listed third with growth of 11.1 percent.
  • According to a recently released report by World Steel Association (worldsteel), India has replaced Japan as the world's second-largest steel producing country.
    • Note : China retained its spot as the largest producer of crude steel accounting for more than 51% of production. 
Deaths
  • Russell Baker (93), the Pulitzer Prize winning writer who penned thousands of columns for The New York Times, and hosted the PBS television program "Masterpiece Theatre," passed away.
New Appointments
  • The President of West African Nation Burkina Faso Marc, Christian Kaboré today appointed Christophe Joseph Marie Dabiré as the new Prime Minister.
    • It follows the resignation of Paul Kaba Thieba and his cabinet last week.
    • Dabiré, a former commissioner representing Burkina Faso at the West African Economic and Monetary Union, served as minister under former president Blaise Compaoré, with Roch Marc Christian Kaboré as prime minister between 1994 to 1996.

Sports Current Affairs
  • India defeated New Zealand by 7 wickets in the 3rd ODI today to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. 
    • This is the 1st time since 2009 that India have won an ODI series in New Zealand. 
  • Former South Africa all-rounder Johan Botha has announced his immediate retirement from all forms of Cricket. 
    • Botha played for South Africa in five test matches, 78 one-day internationals and 40 T20 Internationals from 2005 to 2012.
