International Current Affairs
  • According to the recently released 2019 Edelman Trust Barometer report, India is among the most trusted nations globally when it comes to government, business, NGOs and media.
    • The Index is the average per cent of trust in NGOs, business, government and media.
    • China topped the Trust Index among both the informed public and the general population segments.
    • India was at the 2nd place in the informed public category and 3rd place in the general population category.
    • In terms of trust in companies headquartered in each market, the most trusted are those from Switzerland, Germany and Canada.
    • However, as per the report, companies headquartered in India, Mexico and Brazil are the least trusted, followed by China and South Korea.
National Current Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi  inaugurated the 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh today.
    • Chief guest at the convention : Pravind Jugnauth (Prime Minister of Mauritius)
    • Theme of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2019 : "Role of Indian Diaspora in building New India".
  • The Madras High Court today issued a notice to the Centre on a plea against the 10% reservation for economically weaker sections in general category
    • The court has asked the Centre to file its reply by February 18. 
    • The petition was filed by the political party DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) stating that the government's decision "offends" the basic structure of the Constitution.
  • The Assam Government has decided to give 10 percent quota in Government jobs and educational institutes to economically weaker sections in general category.
    • The state cabinet also approved guidelines for disbursement of 5 thousand rupees each to 5 lakh farmers of the state under the Mukhya Mantri Krishi Sa Sajuli Yojna for purchasing of tools and equipments. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Centre has amalgamated three Regional Rural Banks (RRB) -- Punjab Gramin Bank, Malwa Gramin Bank and Sutlej Gramin Bank -- into a single RRB.
    • The central government, after consulting the sponsor banks of the three RRBs, felt that in the interest of the banks and the areas served by them, they should be amalgamated into a single RRB.
    • The sponsor banks of the RRBs are National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), the Government of Punjab and Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India and Punjab and Sind Bank.
  • India's largest life insurer Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) has completed acquisition of 51% stake in IDBI Bank, making it the lender's majority shareholder
    • Note : The deal had received approval from the Union Cabinet in August last year. 
  • The Indian Army is going to purchase over 3,000 Milan 2T anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) from France in a deal worth over ₹1,000 crore.
    • The decision to procure Milan 2T ATGMs is a stopgap arrangement while the Army gets its own homegrown third-generation ATGM in its arsenal.
    • Milan 2T has a range of over two kilometres.
  • Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Isaac has said the state government will announce a ₹1,000-crore comprehensive health insurance scheme in its budget on January 31. 
    • Note : The budget will be the first to be presented after Kerala's economy was hit by floods last year.
  • Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar has said his government will bring a law to make it mandatory for investors to employ maximum workforce from the state itself
    • Note : In September 2018, Gujarat government said it would make it mandatory for manufacturing and service sector entrepreneurs to hire 80% locals.
  • The Tripura government has unveiled an official logo for the state's tea to popularise the beverage and to promote the potentiality of tourism.
    • The logo features Tripura's iconic landmark, the "Neermahal" which is the largest and one-of-its-kind water palace in India.
    • Note : Tripura is the 2nd largest tea producing state in the northeast (1st state is Assam).
Science & Technology
  • Social media giant Facebook today announced that they are creating an independent Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence with an initial grant of $7.5 million over a period of five years.
    • In collaboration with the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany, the institute will help advance the growing field of ethical research on new technology and will explore fundamental issues affecting the use and impact of AI.

  • The 1st-term Democratic Senator of California, 54-year-old Indian-origin Kamala Harris today launched her 2020 campaign for the post of the US President. 
    • She is the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India.
