National Affairs
  • Haryana Assembly today passed two Bills mandating minimum educational qualification for contesting urban local bodies polls in the state. 
    • The minimum educational qualification for a general male candidate will be Class X, while that for women and those belonging to SC category would be Class VIII. 
    • Note : Haryana had earlier fixed similar qualification for gram panchayat elections as well.
  • Under the new rules of Lokpal Act, all central government employees have been asked to declare details of assets and liabilities including those of their spouses and children by April 15.
    • The employees also have to furnish details of deposits made in foreign banks.
  • According to a new directive by Kerala's Transport and Road Safety Commissioner, Tomin J
    Thachankary, people who purchase two-wheelers will get complimentary ISI-approved helmets with their vehicles from April 1. 
    • The buyers will also receive accessories such as front and rear number plates, rear-view mirror, sari guard, crash guard, and handle grip for pillion riders free of cost.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Brussels (Capital city of Belgium) in the first leg of his three nation tour.
    • During this visit, he attended the 13th India-EU summit today.
    • He will leave for Washington on Thursday to attend the Nuclear Security Summit hosted by US President Barack Obama. 
    • He will then head to Saudi Arabia for a bilateral visit.
  • The 4th Nuclear Security Summit -2016 will begin in Washington DC, the United States (March 31st).
    • A total of 53 countries and five international organizations including the UNO, International Atomic Energy Ageny -IAEA will take part in the two-day summit that was initiated by President Barack Obama in 2009.
    • The last three summits were held in Washington, Seoul and The Hague in the Netherlands in 2010, 2012 and 2014 respectively.
    • The fourth summit which is the last summit under the current format and also under the presidency of Obama is expected to take stock of the measures being taken by all countries to safeguard nuclear materials and facilities and also prevent non-state actors gaining access to them.
  • Thailand is facing its worst drought in over 20 years, with water levels in the nation's largest dams below 10%. 
    • Of the 76 provinces in the nation, 22 have been affected by the drought, and numerous reservoirs are below 50% of their water capacity. 
    • Meanwhile, the nation has begun pumping water from the Mekong River into its waterways.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) had announced that Ebola is no longer an international health emergency and the risk of virus spreading is now low.
    • Note : Worldwide, there have been 28,639 cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) and 11,316 deaths as of 13 March, 2016.

  • Myanmar’s President Thein Sein lifted a state of emergency and curfew in Rakhine, where communal clashes left over 200 people dead in June 2012. 
    • The decision means the military will not provide day-to-day security in the area
    • The nighttime curfew, lasting nearly four years, was imposed after clashes between the minority Rohingya Muslims and majority Buddhists displaced over 100,000 people.
  • UK news organisation The Independent on Saturday published its last print edition after its launch in 1986, to shift completely to the digital-only format.

  • Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has cancelled his official trip to the United Kingdom after a suicide bomb attack at a park in Lahore. 

National Affairs
  • President Pranab Mukherjee has given the final clearance to the Aadhaar Bill, which will now allow the government to make the 12-digit unique identity number compulsory to access government services and benefits
  • Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today inaugurated the 9th edition of the DefExpo, which showcases land, naval and Internal homeland security systems, at Naqueri-Betul village in Goa. 
    • The four-day event will host companies from 47 countries along with official delegations from 44 countries and 750 business delegations. 
    • Parrikar also unveiled the Defence Procurement Policy at the event.
  • The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's recommendation to make 112 the number for all emergency services such as Police, Ambulances, and the Fire Brigade in India was today accepted by the Telecom Commission. 
    • An SMS facility will also be available on this number. The new number will reportedly be rolled out within months.
  • All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has announced that private educational institutes operating under it would have to lower their fees to comply with the National Fee Committee's recommendations

  • Malaysian Prime Minister NajibRazak announced that the country will set up its first counter-messaging centre in a bid to curb the influence of the Islamic State in the cyber world.
  • At least 53 people were killed and 100 were injured after a bomb exploded outside a public park in Pakistan's Lahore today. 
    • Following the blast, an emergency was declared in all hospitals of the city and security was put on high alert.

  • China has launched its first cybersecurity public organisation aimed at better safeguarding national cybersecurity and guiding internet companies in perform their duties.

  • Good Friday, the day commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, is being observed across the world.
  • Authorities in China's capital Beijing have passed a new family planning rule to allow remarried couples to have a second child
    • The new law also grants 128 maternity leaves (98 earlier) for mothers and a 15-day holiday for fathers
    • This comes months after China scrapped its three-decade-old one-child policy, following a sharp increase in people aged above 60 years.
  • Iran President Hassan Rouhani is on a 2-day visit to Pakistan.
    • During the visit, Mr Rouhani is expected to discuss a pipeline project for transporting Iranian natural gas to Pakistan.
  • Sri Lanka's much-awaited Right to Information (RTI) Bill was tabled in Parliament today fulfilling an election promise of the Sirisena government.

GS got  a mixture of questions including Current Affairs, History,Books and Authors etc.

Reasoning included verbal and non-verbal.

English was moderate with comprehension and Cloze 10 questions each...some from find errors..rearrangement etc.

Quant was also easy with DI ques very easy..some questions needed simple mathematics.

Overall paper was nice.

  • The world’s first fully electric-powered double-decker bus has been unveiled in London a month ahead of its road release.
    • The five models, built by Chinese manufactures BYD, will be able to travel 180 miles on a single charge.
  • Holi, Diwali and Easter may soon be declared official holidays in Pakistan, based on a resolution adopted by Pakistan's National Assembly today. 
  • Indian Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and his Pakistani counterpart Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry today exchanged courtesies at the SAARC dinner in Nepal. 
    • The meet marks the first official interaction between the two foreign secretaries since the January 2 terror attacks on the Pathankot airbase, which derailed bilateral ties between the nations.
  • 7th meeting of the Governing Board of the Indo-German Science and Technology Centre (IGSTC) was held in New Delhi.
    • The meeting was chaired by the Union Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan.
    • During the meeting, Dr. Vardhan highlighted the achievements and progress of IGSTC in accelerating the bilateral Science & Technology collaboration.

  • Today is World Consumer Rights Day.
    • In India this day is celebrated as Viswa Upabhokta Adhikar Diwas. 
    • On March 15, 1962 US President John F. Kennedy gave a speech on consumer rights which led to the creation of the Consumer Bill of Rights.
    • Consumer rights activist Anwar Fazal later proposed the observance of a "World Consumer Rights Day" marking that date, and from 15 March 1983 consumer organizations began observing that date as an occasion to promote basic rights of consumers.
    • Theme for World Consumer Rights Day 2016 : Antibiotics off the menu
  • A WHO (World Health Organization) study has found that almost one in four deaths (around 12.6 million) every year are caused due to environmental risks. 
    • The study also found that two-thirds (around 8.2 million) of these are due to non-communicable diseases which have seen a significant rise in 10 years. 
    • Note : This reportedly is the first major WHO assessment of environmental risks after 2006.
