  • 3rd edition of  Science Film Festival 2018 was recently held at Goa.
  • 48th annual meeting of World Economic Forum (WEF) was recently held at Davos (Switzerland). Theme : Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World.
  • 6 Southeast Asian nations (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Brunei)  formed an initiative titled 'Our Eyes'. Aim of 'Our Eyes'  : To counter terrorism and extremism in the region.

International Current Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to visit Palestine on 9th February 2018.
    • During this visit, he will inaugurate Palestine Institute of Diplomacy, which has been set up with Indian assistance of ₹28.6 crore.
    • Important Note : Modi will be the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Palestine.
  • India and Pakistan have extended an agreement on linking the two countries through Munabao-Khokhrapar rail line till January 31, 2021. 
    • The rail link, which connects Sindh and Rajasthan, is important for improving relations between the two countries.
  • The 1st-ever public LGBT festival was held in Myanmar after the government gave its approval for the '&Proud' festival, though homosexuality is illegal in the country. 
    • The primary goal of the event is to acknowledge equality and human rights, and create awareness among the people about the LGBT community.
  • The UK government has approved a plan to build a memorial in London to honour the Indian Sikh servicemen who fought for Britain during WWI and WWII.
National Current Affairs
  • The government has reversed its decision to issue Orange-coloured passports to people requiring emigration check amid criticism that it might lead to discrimination and segregation. 
    • The orange passports identify people who don't file taxes and are not educated beyond Class 10. 
    • Important Note : The government also reversed it's decision to not print the passport holder's address on the last page of the booklet, so now Passports will remain a valid address proof in India.

Syndicate Bank PO Online Exam Postponed

Friends, the Online Exam for the Syndicate Bank PO Recruitment 2018 has been postponed. As you know, the bank has invited online applications for admissions to the One year Post Graduate Diploma in Banking and Finance course in Manipal Global Education Services Pvt Ltd.   • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on 4-day official state visit to Palestine, Oman and UAE in February 2018.
    • This will be the first ever visit by Indian Prime Minister to Palestine.
    • During the visit, PM will hold talks with the leadership in the countries on matters of mutual interest with their leaders, apart from participating in other events.
  • To deal with disputes related to its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China has decided to establish 3 international courts in Beijing, Shenzhen and Xi’an, a development strategy focused on road connectivity and maritime cooperation between Eurasian countries.
National Current Affairs
  • Acid attack victims, people with Autism, Mental Illnesses, and Intellectual Disabilities, will now get reservation for central government jobs
    • In case of direct recruitment, 4% of the total number of vacancies will be reserved for people with benchmark disabilities.
    • Note : Benchmark disability means a person with not less than 40% of a specified disability
  • Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeITY) has launched an initiative titled Stree Swabhiman

2018 Australian Open Winners List

The Australian Open Tennis Tournament 2018 was held during 15th to 28th January 2018 at Melbourne Park, Victoria, Australia. This is the 1st Grand Slam tournament of the year 2018. This is the 106th edition of Australian Open of all-time and 50th edition of the tournament in the Open Era. It is also the 200th Grand Slam event of the Open Era.

Switzerland's Roger Federer became the first male tennis player to win 20 Grand Slam titles, after winning a joint-record sixth Australian Open title in Men's Singles category by beating Croatia's first Australian Open finalist Marin Cilic. World number two Caroline Wozniacki defeated world number one Simona Halep to win her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in the Women's Singles category.   • Today (28th January) is Data Privacy Day/ Data Protection Day.
    • The purpose of this day is to raise awareness and promote privacy and data protection best practices.
    • Theme of Data Privacy Day 2018 : "Respecting Privacy, Safeguarding Data and Enabling Trust"
  • Today is Anti Leprosy Day.
    • Anti Leprosy Day is observed internationally on January 30 or its nearest Sunday to increase the public awareness of the Leprosy or Hansen's Disease.
    • This day was chosen in commemoration of the death of Gandhi, who understood the importance of leprosy.
  • Pakistan was named on this day (28th January) in the year 1933.
    • Muslim nationalist Choudhry Rahmat Ali, who is also known as the Founder of Pakistan National Movement, used 'Pakistan' in his pamphlet 'Now or Never' explaining reasons to establish a separate nation.
    • 'Pakistan' referred to the five northern units of India- 'P'unjab, North-West Frontier ('A'fghan) Province, 'K'ashmir, 'S'ind, and Baluchis'tan' (PAKSTAN).
National Current Affairs
  • Today is National Immunization Day.
    • On the eve of this day, President Ram Nath Kovind launched the Pulse Polio programme 2018 by administering polio drops to children below five years of age at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. 
    • More than 17 crore children of less than five years across the country will be given polio drops as part of the government’s drive to eradicate polio from the country.
  • The Oxford Dictionaries announced 'Aadhaar' as its 2017 'Hindi Word of the Year' at the Jaipur Literature Festival today. 
    • The shortlist included words such as 'Mitron', 'Notebandi', 'Bahubali' and 'Gau-rakshak', among others.
  • Today is freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai's 153rd birth anniversary. 
    • He was popularly known as Punjab Kesari.
      He was also associated with activities of Punjab National Bank and Lakshmi Insurance Company in their early stages.
  • The Union government has approved setting up of the long-awaited Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) at Raichur (Karnataka).
    • This is 2nd IIIT in Karnataka after one in Dharwad.

Meet the 1st woman chairman of Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) - Usha Ananthasubramanian

The MD & CEO of Allahabad Bank, Usha Ananthasubramanian has been elected as the new Chairman of Indian Banks’ Association (IBA). With this, she became the 1st woman chairman of the organization.

Mrs Subramanian is going to replace Jatinder Bir Singh, the Chairman and Managing Director of Punjab & Sind Bank, who left the position on 31st December 2017.

Rajnish Kumar, Chairman, State Bank of India, was elected Deputy Chairman of IBA.

  • The ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit was recently held at New Delhi. 
    • This summit marks the 25 years of India's ties with the southeast Asian bloc.  
    • Leaders of the ten ASEAN countries, comprising Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar (Burma), Cambodia, Laos and Brunei have attended the summit. 
    • The ASEAN Nations have issued a joint statement titled Delhi Declaration focusing on counter-terrorism, identity security, military cooperation, and bilateral financial support.
    • ASEAN - Association of South East Asian Nations.
    • Theme of this summit : “Shared Values, Common Destiny”.
  • 6 Southeast Asian nations (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Brunei) today formed an initiative titled 'Our Eyes'. 
    • Aim of 'Our Eyes'  : To counter terrorism and extremism in the region. 
    • Under this initiative, nations will share information on militant groups and develop a common database of extremists.

  • India celebrated its 69th Republic Day today with a record 10 heads of state from ASEAN Nations, watching the grand parade with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Rajpath, Delhi.
  • The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) today said that engineering students will study vedas, puranas, and yoga under the revised curriculum from the next academic session. 
    • The modified course will also focus on Indian philosophical, linguistic and artistic traditions.
  • The Maharashtra government has launched `Balasaheb Thackeray Shaheed Sanmaan' scheme, under which family members of martyrs would be provided jobs with the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). 
  • Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu inaugurated the World War II Memorial Museum in the state's Changlang district bordering Myanmar.

India today celebrated it's 69th Republic Day. This day honours the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect on 26 January 1950 replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India. Here are the major highlights.

Padma Awards 2018 (Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri) Full List

On the eve of Republic Day, the Indian government today announced the Padma award winners for the year 2018. This year a total of 85 people from different fields are going to be honored with Padma Awards. Of these, 3 were Padma Vibhushan, 9 Padma Bhushan, and 73 Padma Shri. 16 awardees were either foreigners, PIOs, or NRIs, while three of the awards were conferred posthumously.

About Padma Awards :
Established in 1954, Padma awards are given in different fields and disciplines such as art, literature and education, sports, medicine, social work, science and engineering, public affairs, civil service, trade and industry. The highest award of honour is Padma Vibhushan, followed by Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

This year, Music composer Illyaraja and Hindustani classical musician Ghulam Mustafa Khan have got the prestigious Padma Vivhushan Award. Former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and billiards player Pankaj Advani were among the ones to be conferred with Padma Shri.
