  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a 2 day visit to Bhutan from tomorrow. 
    • The main aim of this visit is to  strengthen India-Bhutan partnership.
    • 10 MoUs will be signed between the two countries and atleast 5 projects are expected to be inaugurated including Mangdechhu hydroelectric power project during Prime Minister's visit.
  • Deputy Secretary of US Department of State, John Sullivan today met External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar in New Delhi. 
    • They discussed the deep convergences of strategic relationship between the two countries.
National Current Affairs
  • During his Independence Day speech, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel announced reservation of 32% for STs, 13% for SCs and 27% for OBCs in state education and jobs. 
    • This leads to an overall reservation of 72%, which is 22% above the 50% limit set by Supreme Court. 
  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy launched his government’s flagship programme titled ‘Village Volunteers System’ aimed at providing government services at doorsteps of people. 
    • The scheme would be officially launched on 2 October 2019, which also marks 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the government will launch a scheme titled 'Jal Jeevan Mission' to bring piped water to households in the coming years. 
    • This scheme will bring piped water to households and will cost more than Rs 3.5 lakh crore.
  • Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has announced that a massive campaign will be launched to make India free of single-use plastic
    • In this regard, a series of meetings will be held with all stakeholders including state governments to chalk out a concrete plan to make it a people's campaign to realise the ultimate target.
  • Aadi Mahotsav, the national tribal festival, will start from tomorrow at Polo Ground in  Leh-Ladakh. 
    • The 9-day event will be inaugurated by the Jammu and Kashmir Governor, Satya Pal Malik.
    • Around 160 Tribal artisans from more than 20 states across the country will actively participate and showcase their masterpieces in this event.
    • Theme of Aadi Mahotsav 2019 : A celebration of the spirit of Tribal Craft, Culture and Commerce.

  • The State Bank of India (SBI) has announced that it is planning to dilute stake in its credit card subsidiary, SBI Cards and Payment Services, through an initial public offering. 
    • SBI had received in-principle approval from its central board to list SBI Card. 
    • Note : SBI currently holds 74% stake in SBI Card and will now seek regulatory approval to sell the stake.

    • Nation celebrates it's 73rd Independence Day today (15th August) with patriotic fervour.
      • The last Viceroy of India Lord Mountbatten chose August 15 for making India independent to mark the second anniversary of Japan's surrender in the World War II. 
      • He was the Supreme Allied Commander of South-East Asia Command and had accepted Japan's surrender to the Allied Forces himself on August 15, 1945, marking the end of the World War II. 
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today hoisted the National Flag for the 6th straight time at the Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day. 
      • With this, he equalled the number of times late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had hoisted the flag on the occasion of Independence Day.

      • During his speech, Modi announced that India will have a Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), who will head all 3 forces- Army, Air Force and Navy
      • The decision has been made to "further sharpen coordination between the forces".

    • US President Donald Trump has said that India and China are no longer developing nations and both are taking advantage of developing nations tag from the World Trade Organization.
      • Trump, championing his America First policy, has been a vocal critic of India for levying allegedly high duties on US products. 
      • Note : The US and China are currently engaged in a bruising trade war after Trump imposed punitive tariffs on Chinese goods.
    • Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik's administration will host the new Union Territory's 1st-ever Global Investors' Summit from October 12-14 following the abrogation of Article 370. 
      • The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will be the national partner for the meet.

    • The Nation will celebrate the 73rd Independence Day tomorrow. 
      • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unfurl the National Flag from the ramparts of the Red Fort and address the nation. 
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Dynamic Facade Lighting of the Parliament House Estate yesterday.
      • As many as 875 energy-efficient LED lights have been installed in the Parliament Complex. 
      • These are power efficient and uses only one-fifth of the electricity compared to other types of lights.
      • The long-lasting, excellent intensity LED bulbs are capable of creating 16 million colour combinations and the LED lighting is programmable and electronically controlled through computers.
    • The Union Government has announced that there has been a 41% reduction in stubble burning incidents in 2018 as compared to 2016. 
    • Centre today launched India's largest sanitation survey Swachh Survekshan Grameen-2019
      • The aim of this survey is to engage rural communities in improvement of the sanitation status of their districts and states through intensive campaign. 
      • The 45-day long survey will take place in 18 thousand villages of 698 districts.
    • Mumbai is all set to get the 1st Indian Institute of Skills - IIS, the foundation stone of which will be laid next month. 
    Science & Technology
    • India's second Moon mission Chandrayaan-2 left the Earth's orbit today's morning and is moving towards the Moon. 
      • ISRO said the spacecraft carried out the manoeuvre called 'Trans Lunar Injection' at 2:21 am, following which it successfully entered the Lunar Transfer Trajectory. 
      • Note : Chandrayaan-2 is expected to land on lunar surface on September 7.

    • All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has issued a press release stating that it has "banned and boycotted" singer Mika Singh from the Indian film industry after he performed in Pakistan.
    Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
    • The Indian rupee has become Asia's worst-performing currency in August amid foreign fund outflows, global trade tensions and pressure from China's yuan. 
      • The local currency has slumped 3.49% against the US dollar so far this month, heading towards its second-worst monthly loss in four years.
    • Denmark's third-largest bank, Jyske Bank, has launched the world's 1st negative interest rate home loan, where the charge is -0.5% a year
      • This means that Jyske Bank will effectively pay borrowers 0.5% a year to take out a loan.
      • Borrowers will make monthly repayments but the amount outstanding will be reduced each month by more than what the borrower paid.
    • Paytm has confirmed that its consumer lending service Paytm Postpaid has been entirely discontinued
      • Started in December 2018, Paytm Postpaid allowed users to buy products and services and pay later. 
      • Through the service, Paytm offered a credit limit of up to ₹60,000 without any interest.
    • A rare variety of tea named ‘Golden Butterfly’ from Upper Assam’s Dikom Tea Estate set a new record on as it was auctioned for Rs.75,000 per kg at Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC). 
      • It broke the record for highest price fetched by a tea at a public auction for 3rd time in a fortnight.
    • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has asked banks not to count failed transactions at ATMs due to technical reasons as part of "free ATM transactions" permitted every month. 
      • Besides, the use of ATMs for balance enquiry and fund transfers too should be not part of the free transactions facility given to a customer.

    • High Level Committee (HLC) on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) constituted by Ministry of Corporate Affairs recommended making CSR expenditure tax deductible and to make compliance violations as a civil offence that attracts penalties. 
      • The High Level Committee on CSR was constituted in October 2018 under Chairmanship of Secretary (Ministry of Corporate Affairs) Injeti Srinivas to review existing CSR framework and make recommendations on strengthening CSR ecosystem, including implementation, monitoring and evaluation of outcomes.
    Awards & Honors
    • President Ram Nath Kovind, who is also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, has approved 132 Awards to Armed Forces Personnel and members of Paramilitary Forces. 
      • The awards include 2 Kirti Chakras, 1 Vir Chakra, 14 Shaurya Chakras, 8 Bar to Sena Medals (Gallantry), 90 Sena Medals (Gallantry), 5 Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry), 7 Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry) and 5 Yudh Seva Medals.  
      • From the Army, Sapper Prakash Jadhav has been posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, the second-highest peacetime gallantry award. Deputy Commandant, CRPF, Harshpal Singh has also been awarded the Kirti Chakra.
      • IAF Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who shot down a Pakistani F-16 jet, will be awarded Vir Chakra.

    • The famous Panchamritham, an offering of the Palani Dandayuthaswamy temple, in Tamil Nadu, has been granted the Geographical Identity (GI) tag.
      • Note : This is the first temple offering - Prashad - from Tamil Nadu - to be conferred this honour. 
      • Earlier, the Tanjavoor Veenai, Madurai Malligai, Neelgiri Tea leaves as well as Turmeric from Erode from Tamil Nadu have been bestowed with Geographical Identity tags.

      On the eve of 73rd Independence Day, the brave hearts of Indian Army will be honoured with Gallantry Awards for the year 2019. Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who shot down a Pakistani F-16 Jet and spent around 60 hours in Pakistan's captivity will be honored with Vir Chakra. The Vir Chakra is the 3rd highest wartime gallantry award. The 36-year-old became the face of the military confrontation between India and Pakistan in February this year.   

      IAF Squadron Leader Minty Agarwal will be honoured with Yudh Seva Medal for her role as a fighter controller during the 27 February aerial conflict between India and Pakistan. Indian Army’s Sapper Prakash Jadhav of 1 Rashtriya Rifles (Mahar) will be conferred Kirti Chakra (posthumously), for the role he played in an operation in Jammu and Kashmir.

      The awards include 2 Kirti Chakras, 1 Vir Chakra, 14 Shaurya Chakras, 8 Bar to Sena Medals (Gallantry), 90 Sena Medals (Gallantry), 5 Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry), 7 Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry) and 5 Yudh Seva Medals.       International Current Affairs
      • Today (13th August) is International Lefthanders Day.
        • This day was first observed on the 13th of August, in the year 1976.
        • People observe this day to promote awareness of the inconveniences faced by left-handers in a predominantly right-handed world.
      • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a bilateral meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing yesterday. 
        • Both leaders discussed the full gamut of issues relating to the international situation, regional aspects and the bilateral relations including the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to India for the 2nd Informal Summit later this year.
        • The two countries agreed that maintenance of peace and tranquility in border areas was essential for smooth development of relations. For this, the two armed forces had enhanced communication and were implementing various confidence building measures.
      • In Sri Lanka, former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa has been named as the Presidential candidate of main opposition Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) at its first national convention in Colombo today. 
        • Sri Lanka won the war against LTTE in 2009 during Presidency of Mahinda while Gotabaya served as defence secretary. 
        • Mahinda lost power in 2015 elections but SLPP, a breakaway group of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) made a comeback with victory at local body elections in February 2018. 
        • United National Party (UNP) led by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is the other main party which is divided over the issue of Presidential candidate.

      • Newly discovered Kajin Sara lake in Nepal is likely to set a new record of being the world’s highest lake
        • The Kajin Sara lake in Manang district was discovered about a few months ago by a team of mountaineer. It is located at Singarkharka area of Chame rural municipality.

      MOUs & Agreements
      • India and China signed 4 agreements including on Sports, Culture and traditional medicines.
        • The 4th agreement is about 'Plan of Action to Implement the Protocol' between the Ministery of External Affairs and the Minsitry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China on Cooperation in Bilateral Relations, 2020.
      National Current Affairs
      • Indian Army has launched Mission Reach Out in Jammu to ensure basic essential services and necessities are available in region after the abrogation of Article 370 provisions and reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir. 
      • Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar today released a patriotic song titled 'Watan' in New Delhi in the run up to the Independence Day. 
        • The song has been sung by famous Bollywood singer Javed Ali
        • It has been penned by lyricist Alok Shrivastav and music composed by Dushyant.
        • Produced by Doordarshan, the song pays tribute to New India. 
        • It highlights several path-breaking initiatives of the government including the determination and vision behind the recent successful launch of Chandrayaan 2. 
        • The song also pays tribute to the bravery and valour of the armed forces and the martyrs of the country.
      • Bar Council of India (BCI), the apex bar body has imposed 3 year moratorium on opening of new institutions except for National Law Universities (NLUs), if proposed by a state. 
        • This decision has been taken to curb mushrooming of law colleges in the country and laying stress on improvement of standard of existing institutions. 
      Science & Technology
      • The Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), K Sivan today announced that India's 2nd Moon mission Chandrayaan-2 will enter the lunar orbit on August 20. 
        • The 3,840-kg Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft had successfully entered the fifth orbit around the Earth on August 6 after five orbit-raising manoeuvres. 
        • The manoeuvre to get the spacecraft out of the Earth's orbit will be performed on August 14.
      New Appointments
      • Conservative candidate and ex-prison chief Alejandro Giammattei has been elected as the new President of Guatemala.
        • Giammattei defeated former first lady Sandra Torres in a run-off yesterday, garnering more than 58 percent of the vote. 
      Sports Current Affairs
      • The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) today announced that Women's T20 cricket has been included in 2022 Commonwealth Games, which will take place in England's Birmingham. 
        • Note : The sport last featured in Commonwealth Games in 1998, when South Africa won gold in men's 50-over format competition.
      • Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu won the Rogers Cup after Serena Williams was forced to retire with a back injury while trailing 1-3 in the first set in the final yesterday.
      • Indian women's football team was handed a special 3rd-place trophy for their performance at COTIF Cup, Spain by the tournament's President Eliseu G√≥mez Tormos. 
      • 23 year old Racer Aishwarya Pissay became the 1st Indian to claim a world title in motorsports after finishing 4th in the final round of the women's category at FIM World Cup in Hungary. 
      • India U-19 defeated Bangladesh U-19 by 6 wickets at County Ground in England to win the Tri-Nation Under-19s Tournament title.

        • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Beijing today on a key 3-day visit.
          • During this visit, he will hold talks with the Chinese leadership.  
          • A host of issues is sought to be discussed, including finalisation of arrangements for President Xi Jinping's visit to India later this year for the second informal summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
          • 4 Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) were expected to be signed during Jaishankar's visit.
        • China today told the UK to stay out of its internal affairs, saying, "Hong Kong was no longer a British colony and the UK has no supervisory rights." 
        • The 22nd National Conference on e-Governance (NCeG) 2019 was recently held at Shillong (Meghalaya) with the adoption of ‘Shillong Declaration’ on e-Governance.
          • This conference was organized by Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances (DAPRG), Ministry of Personnel and Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), in collaboration with Government of Meghalaya.
          • Theme of the Conference : “Digital India: Success to Excellence”. 
        National Current Affairs
        • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu launched the Jharkhand government's 'Mukhya Mantri Krishi Ashirwad Yojana'.
          • Under this scheme, money will be directly transferred into the bank accounts of farmers in the state. 
          • Under the scheme, beneficiaries having farm land of less than one acre to five acres, will get 5,000 to 25,000 rupees in their bank accounts.
        • To spread awareness about job opportunities, the Union Information & Broadcasting Ministery launched e-version of Rozgar Samachar

        • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved US $200 million loan for Road Infrastructure Improving project in Maharashtra’s 34 districts for better connecting rural areas with markets and services.  
          • The proceeds of loan from ADB will be used for upgrading roads in rural areas of these districts to all-weather standards for boosting links between local residents and economic centres across the state.

        • With aim to honour outstanding young 1st generation entrepreneurs as well as ecosystem builders for their exceptional contribution in entrepreneurship development, the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) announced 4th edition of National Entrepreneurship Awards 2019
          • They will reward the most innovative, inspiring and accomplished micro entrepreneurs to scale up their business.

          The annual Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) for the year 2019 was held at the iconic Palais Theatre, Melbourne, Australia. Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy walked away with the Best Film honour. Tamil Actor Vijay Sethupathi won the Best Actor for his widely-acclaimed movie Super Deluxe.           • Today (10th August) is World Biofuel Day.
            • This day is observed every year on 10th August to create awareness about the importance of non-fossil fuels as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels and to highlight the various efforts made by the Government in the biofuel sector.
            • Since 2014, the Government of India has taken a number of initiatives to increase blending of biofuels.
            • The major interventions include administrative price mechanism for ethanol, simplifying the procurement procedures of OMCs, amending the provisions of Industries (Development & Regulation) Act, 1951 and enabling lignocellulosic route for ethanol procurement.
            • Theme of the World Biofuel Day 2019 : “Production of Biodiesel from Used Cooking Oil (UCO)
          • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a 2-day visit to Bhutan during 17th & 18th of August 2019. 
            • During this visit, the PM will hold talks on issues like strengthening the bilateral development partnership and collaborating in the hydropower sector, among others.
          • US President Donald Trump has identified India along with 22 countries as a major drug transit or major illicit drug producing country
          National Current Affairs
          • President Ram Nath Kovind has gave assent to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 which is aimed at bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories. 
            • With this, J&K and Ladakh will officially become Union Territories from October 31

            • This day is observed every year to promote and protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population.

          • The 7th meeting of the India-Bangladesh Home Minister Level Talks was held in New Delhi yesterday. 
            • Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated his Bangladesh counterpart Asaduzzaman Khan on the resumption of the office for a second term.
            • He reiterated India’s full support for Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s development agenda. 
            • Both the Ministers reiterated the significance of the bilateral relationship.
          • Russian President Vladimir Putin completed 20 years in power today. 
            • Putin was appointed as the acting Prime Minister by the then Russian President Boris Yeltsin on 9th August 1999. 
            • Putin won his fourth Presidential election last year and will stay in office till 2024.

          • Today is Kranti Diwas (Quit India Day). 
            • This day observes the 77th anniversary of the Quit India movement.  
            • On this date in 1942, Mahatma Gandhi gave a clarion call to end the British rule and launched the Quit India Movement at the session of the All-India Congress Committee in Mumbai.
            • The iconic 'Quit India' slogan was coined by socialist Congress leader and then mayor of Bombay, "Yusuf Meherally"

          Complete Winners List of 66th National Film Awards 2019

          Honoring the Best of Indian cinema in the year 2018, the winners list of the 66th National Film Awards has been released today by the Directorate of Film Festivals, India. Crime thriller film Andhadhun (blind melody) directed by Sriram Raghavan has won the Award for Best Hindi film. Gujarati film Helaru has won the best film award. Ayushmann Khurrana and Vicky Kaushal won the National Award for Best Actor for 'AndhaDhun' and 'Uri: The Surgical Strike' respectively. While Ayushmann played the role of a pianist pretending to be visually-impaired in 'AndhaDhun', Vicky portrayed an Army Officer in 'Uri: The Surgical Strike'. The award for Best Actress went to Keerthy Suresh for Telugu film 'Mahanati'. Here is the complete winners list of the awards. Happy Reading :)
