  • Today (Last Day of February) is Rare Disease Day.
    • This day aims to raise awareness about relatively unknown diseases and their impact. 
    • Started as a European event, over 80 countries across the world have joined the campaign. 
    • Note : According to the World Health Organisation, a disease found in less than 6.5-10 people per 10,000 people is defined as rare.
    • Theme of Rare Disease Day 2018 : research
  • Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani today offered to recognise Taliban as a legitimate political group in order to end the over 16-year-long war. "
    • He also proposed a ceasefire and the release of Taliban-linked prisoners along with fresh elections and a constitutional review.
  • Belgium's capital Brussels is going to provide free public transport on days of excessive air pollution under new emergency rules. 
    • Speed limits of cars would be reduced by a third and wood fires will be banned unless they are the only source of heating for households.
  • The 2 day International conference on Sustainable Biofuels was held in New Delhi. 
    • This conference was jointly being organized by Department of Biotechnology and Biofuture platform.
    • Aim of this Conference : To provide common platform to Government policy makers, industry, investors and research community to exchange experiences and challenges related to development and scaling of advance biofuels.

SBI Clerks 2018 Online Exams (Prelims & Mains) Postponed

Good news friends, you will get more time for your SBI Junior Associates (Clerks) 2018 preparation. The State Bank of India (SBI) has revised the exam dates for upcoming SBI Clerks 2018 Preliminary and Main Online Exams. According to a recently released notification by SBI, the Preliminary Examination scheduled to be held tentatively in the month of March/April’ 2018 has been deferred and it will now be held tentatively in the month June/July 2018. The Main Online Exam which was scheduled to be held on 12th May 2018 will be held on 5th August 2018. Check complete details below. All the Best :)

  • China was elected as vice chair of Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a global body mandated to combat terror financing and money laundering. 
  • The Indian Navy is going to host the multi-national MILAN exercise 2018 at Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar (A&N) islands from March 6 to 13, 2018. 
    • The 8-day mega naval exercise will be held under aegis of Andaman and Nicobar Command with theme of ‘Friendship Across the Seas’.
    • 16 countries  including Australia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, New Zealand, Oman, Vietnam, Thailand, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kenya and Cambodia are participating in this exercise.
    • Note : Maldives has declined India's invitation to participate in this exercise amid the state of emergency in Maldives after the government refused a Supreme Court order to release political prisoners. 
  • India has been ranked 47th out of 86 countries on the Inclusive Internet Index by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), which was commissioned by Facebook.
    • Sweden took the first place, followed by Singapore and the US
  • Meghalaya Governor Ganga Prasad has inaugurated the "Friendship Gate" near Integrated Check post, 90 km South of capital Shillong on border with Bangladesh.
    • This gate has been constructed with an aim to have a Wagah-like beating retreat ceremony for the Indian and Bangladesh border guards.

  • Nation paying tribute to martyr Chandrashekhar Azad (23rd July 1906 – 27th February 1931)  on his Death Anniversary today.
    • He was a great Indian freedom fighter who was involved in Kakori Train Robbery, the attempt to blow up the Viceroy's train, and the shooting of Saunders at Lahore to avenge the killing of Lala Lajpat Rai.
    • He was the mentor of Bhagat Singh, another great freedom fighter.
    • After the independence, to commemorate Chandra Shekhar Azad, Alfred Park (Allahabad), where Chandra Shekhar Azad shot himself was renamed Chandra Shekhar Azad Park.

  • As part of the Vision 2030 social program launched by Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, the Saudi Arabia's General Security division today allowed women aged between 25 and 35 to apply for the rank of soldier

  • According to latest government data, women constitute only 7.28% of India's police force
    • This comes despite the government's repeated directions to all state governments and union territories to increase the strength of women police personnel to 33%. 
Science & Technology
  • For safe keeping of astronauts, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has started working towards developing 'Igloos' on Moon, called the lunar habitats
    • The habitats will be built by sending robots and 3D printers to the Moon and using lunar soil. 
  • Indian Railways in collaboration with General Electric (GE) has inducted two Digitally Enabled Locomotives based on state of art insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) technology. 
    • The two HHP prototypes locomotives were wholly designed in India under Make in India program and manufactured under Public Private partnership (PPP) through MoU with GE.

After failing in GATE exam 2013, I was so disappointed with my jobless condition.Then I entered into Banking preparation in 2014. It has been quite an exciting journey. RBI constitutes Y H Malegam Committee to Monitor Frauds in Indian Banking System

In wake of recent Rs 11,400 crore SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication)-related fraud in Punjab National Bank (PNB), the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has constituted an expert committee.

This committee will look into the reasons for high divergence observed in asset classification and provisioning by banks vis-à-vis the RBI’s supervisory assessment. Will suggest the steps needed to prevent it; factors leading to an increasing incidence of frauds in banks and the measures (including IT interventions) needed to curb and prevent it; and the role and effectiveness of various types of audits conducted in banks in mitigating the incidence of such divergence and frauds.

Meet the 1st Digital Human Employee of Royal Bank of Scotland - Cora

The British banking giant Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), which recently announced thousands of job cuts to reduce costs, has hired a Digital Human named 'Cora' on Probation. Cora will help the bank's customers with basic queries by giving its digital banking drive a more human face.

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered digital teller, who wears a special uniform and has an ear piercing and sparkling teeth, answers simple questions on getting a mortgage or what to do if a customer loses their card. The lifelike, virtual bank teller can answer up to 200 banking queries for NatWest customers in two-way conversations on a computer screen, tablet or mobile phone.

Cora, which is undergoing advanced testing as part of a pilot programme at RBS, could even be used to train members of staff. She will only be rolled out if the female avatar passes her probation period, the bank has announced in a press note.

Model 1 :
  1. If two-third of one-fifth of three-seventh of a number is 4, what is the number ?
    1. 60
    2. 70
    3. 75
    4. 80
    5. None of these
Solution :

Given that two third (2/3) of one fifth (1/5) of three seventh (3/7) of a number is 4.

Say that number is x, So

(2/3)×(1/5)×(3/7) x = 4

=> x = 70

  • Today (21st February) is International Mother Language Day.
    • This day is observed to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.
    • First announced by UNESCO on 17 November 1999, it was formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution establishing 2008 as the International Year of Languages.
    • February 21 was specifically chosen to mark the day in 1952 when students demonstrated for recognition of their language, Bangla as a national language in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).

  • Kerala has made vaccination compulsory for school admissions from next academic year onwards.

  • Following a Supreme Court directive, the Union Cabinet has approved the setting up of a tribunal to resolve the dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh on sharing water from the Mahanadi river
    • In 2016, Odisha had moved the SC against Chhattisgarh building dams on the river alleging that it was affecting the river flow and water supply to its farmers.
