International Current Affairs
  • Today (26th January) is International Customs Day.
    • This day recognizes the role of custom officials and agencies in maintaining border security.
    • It focuses on the working conditions and challenges that customs officers face in their jobs.
    • Theme of International Customs Day 2019 : “SMART borders for seamless Trade, Travel and Transport."
  • Australians celebrate their national day, Australia Day today (same date of Indian Republic Day). 
    • Australia Day marks the beginning of the European settlement in Australia and the foundation of the modern Australian state. It was on January 26, 1788, that the First Fleet of British ships arrived at Sydney Cove.
  • The African nation of Angola has decriminalised homosexuality after the parliament removed the "vices against nature" provision. 
    • The government has also banned discrimination against people on the basis of sexual orientation. 
  • People in the southern Philippines have voted to create a new Muslim autonomous region known as the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region which will replace the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. 
    • The creation of the region is a key provision in a peace agreement signed in 2014 between the Philippine government and Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the main Muslim rebel group.
  • Sugarcane juice has won the Pakistan government's Twitter poll to become the 'National juice' of the country. 
MOUs & Agreements
  • India and South Africa have signed a 3-Year Strategic Programme of Cooperation (2019-2021).aimed at further enhancing the strategic partnership between the two countries. 
    • The two nations agreed to enhance ties in the economic and defence sector, among others. 
    • Note : South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is on a visit to India to be the Chief Guest at the 70th Republic Day celebrations.
  • Ending the longest government shutdown in the nation's history, US President Donald Trump signed a bill to reopen the government for three weeks, until February 15. 
    • The 35-day-long shutdown was called off by the leader without getting the $5 billion he had demanded from Congress for a border wall. 
    • The negotiation for the money will continue.
National Current Affairs
  • India celebrates 70th Republic Day today.
    • The Constitution of India came into force on this day (January 26) 1950, replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India. 
    • To commemorate this, January 26 is celebrated as Republic Day every year. 
    • Note : This day was also chosen as the Republic Day because, on January 26, 1930, the declaration of complete independence was proclaimed by the Congress.
    • Chief Guest of 70th Republic Day : Cyril Ramaphosa (South African President)
    • Lieutenant Bhavana Kasturi has become the 1st woman to lead an all-men Army contingent in Republic Day parade by leading the Indian Army Service Corps contingent. 
    • An all-women Assam Rifles contingent was also part of the parade for the first time.
    • 'Shankhnaad', a martial tune created for the Indian armed forces, was played for the first time on the Republic Day as the defence forces earlier used the martial tune created by Britishers before Independence. The tune, which was dedicated to the nation in October 2018, is composed by Tanuja Nafde based on Brigadier Vivek Sohal's poem.
  • The 4th edition of Bharat Parv, showcasing the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat began at Red Fort in Delhi today. 
    • It will continue till 31st January.
    • The five day event is a part of Republic Day Celebrations.
    • Objective Bharat Parv : To generate a patriotic fervour and promote rich cultural diversity of the country
  • Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani today declared 500-metre radius of Ambaji and Somnath temples as 'vegetarian zone'. 
    • The move means that non-vegetarian food, such as meat and chicken, cannot be sold near the premises of these two temples. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel today announced that his government will waive off irrigation tax worth ₹207 crore
    • The waiver will cover tax owed by farmers till October 2018 and will benefit around 15 lakh farmers.
Awards & Honors
  • Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani of Jammu and Kashmir was posthumously  conferred with the Ashoka Chakra Award, India's highest peacetime gallantry award,  by  President Kovind. 
    • The award was received by his Mother and Wife.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind today awarded India's highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna Award for 2019 to ex-President Pranab Mukherjee, late social activist Nanaji Deshmukh and late music maestro Bhupen Hazarika
  • President Ramnath Kovind announced Padma Awards 2019, one of the highest civilian Awards of the country. 
    • These awards are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. 
    • A total of 112 people (4 Padma Vibhushan, 14 Padma Bhushan and 94 Padma Shri Awards) from various disciplines are going to get these awards for the year 2019.

Science & Technology
  • National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)'s Opportunity rover has completed 15 years on Mars after it landed on January 24, 2004, and sent its first signal to Earth after a few hours. 
    • The solar-powered rover was designed to travel about 1 km and operate for 90 Martian days (sols). 
    • However, it has travelled over 45 km and logged its 5,000th sol as of February 2018.
  • The government today announced Padma Bhushan for former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan, who was cleared in the 1994 spying case by the Supreme Court last year. 
    • Narayanan was wrongly accused of sharing defence secrets with Maldivian spies. 
Deaths
  • Oscar-winning French music composer Michel Legrand (86) passed away.
    • The 3-time Oscar recipient won his 1st Academy Award in 1968 for the song 'The Windmills of Your Mind' from the film 'The Thomas Crown Affair'. 
    • During his career, spanning over 50 years, Michel worked with several renowned filmmakers and musicians including Orson Welles and Frank Sinatra.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Naomi Osaka (Japan) todya won the Australian Open 2019 women's singles title by defeating Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic).
    • With this, the 21-year-old became the 1st-ever Asian tennis player (male or female) to achieve the world number one singles' ranking
    • Osaka also became the youngest female world number one since Caroline Wozniacki (20) in 2010.
    • This is Osaka's second consecutive Grand Slam title. 
  • Former US Open women's singles winner Sam Stosur teamed up with Zhang Shuai to overcome defending champions Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic to claim the Australian Open 2019 women's doubles title
    • This was the 34-year-old Australian's 1st Grand Slam title on home soil since 2005. 
    • This was Zhang's first Grand Slam title of any kind.
  • As many as 9 sports personalities have been conferred with Padma Awards 2019. Some of the important Names are :
    • Gautam Gambhir (ex-cricketer) - Padma Shri
    • Sunil Chhetri (football team captain) - Padma Shri
    • Sharath Kamal (table tennis player) - Padma Shri
    • Bajrang Punia (wrestler) - Padma Shri
    • Bachendri Pal (mountaineer) - Padma Bhushan
