    • This day was established on October 31, 1924, during the 1st International Savings Bank Congress (World Society of Savings Banks) in Milano, Italy.

  • Today is Halloween.
    • The word Halloween came from 'Hallowed evening', and is the day before All Hallows Day - also known as All Saints' Day.
  • Austria has announced that it is withdrawing from the United Nations' (UN) Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration Agreement which is due to be formally approved in December in Morocco. 
    • Austria said that the pact will blur the distinction between legal and illegal migration. 
    • This agreement aims to boost international cooperation on migration issues.
  • India and Italy today agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in areas of defence, trade and infrastructure and condemned those providing safe havens to terror groups. 
    • India invited Italian defence firms to invest under the 'Make in India' initiative. 
    • Note : This is the first time that the nations agreed on broad defence production since the Agusta Westland case surfaced in 2013.

PM Modi inaugurated “Statue of Unity" - Tallest statue in the world : Highlights

India today officially became host to the tallest statue in the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the world’s tallest statue, the “Statue of Unity”, at Kevadiya in Narmada district of Gujarat. The statue of Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, built on an islet ‘Sadhu Bet’ near the Sardar Sarovar Dam, stands tall at 182 metres. The statue is being unveiled on his birth anniversary. Near the statue, the Prime Minister also unveiled the ‘Wall of Unity’ which has been created with the earth samples collected from various states across the country.


The statue has been built at a cost of about 2,400 crore rupees. It has been built using over 70,000 tonnes of cement, 18,500 tonnes of reinforcement steel, 6,000 tonnes of structural steel and 1,700 metric tonnes of bronze, which was used for the outer cladding of the structure.

The statue has been designed by Padma Bhushan-winning sculptor Ram V Sutar and has been built by Larsen and Toubro and the state-run Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd. It took about 250 engineers and 3,400 labourers to construct the statue in 33 months.

Mr Modi had laid the foundation stone of the project on 31st October 2013 when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. With the unveiling, the statue will become a representative and inspiration of Unity, Integrity and Peace across the globe.

The Statue of Unity stands 177 feet higher than the current world's tallest, China's Spring Temple Buddha in the central Henan province. This statue is twice the height of America’s world-renowned Statue of Liberty.

NSDL Payments Bank starts operations in India

The National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) Payments Bank has started operations as payments bank with effect from 29th October 2018. The Reserve Bank has issued a license to the bank under Section 22 (1) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 to carry on the business of payments bank in India.  As a payments bank ,NSDL can accept demand deposits, and issue ATM/debit cards, among other activities. However, it cannot issue credit cards, and undertake lending activities.

  • Established in August 1996, NSDL is the first and the largest depository in India. It provides bouquet of services to end investors, stock brokers, stock exchanges, custodians, issuer companies etc through its network of more than 260 depository participants / business partners.

  • Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte is on a day-long maiden visit to India today.
    • During this visit, he held talks with PM Narendra Modi to boost cooperation in key areas such as trade and investment, besides participating in the India-Italy Technology Summit.
    • The highlight of the visit will be the Italian prime minister's participation at the 24th edition of the India-Italy Technology Summit which is being organised by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
    • The summit will focus on a number of areas including healthcare, aerospace, education, clean technology, renewable energy and information and communication technology.
  • China and Pakistan will in November launch a Bus service through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project
    • The bus service plans to boost the friendly relations between the two countries.
  • US President Donald Trump has turned down India's invitation to be the chief guest at next year's Republic Day parade. 
    • A White House spokesperson said Trump would be unable to participate due to "scheduling constraints".

  • World's first robot citizen Sophia has been granted the world's first robot visa for a world tour on behalf of her Hong Kong-based developer Hanson Robotics. 
  • Japanese Princess Ayako today married a commoner in a ceremony held at Tokyo's Meiji Shrine. 
    • Note : According to Japan's imperial law, the royal family's female members forfeit their status if they choose to marry someone who does not have royal or aristocratic family ties.
  • A Bangladesh court today sentenced former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia to 7 years in jail on corruption charges.

  • The Supreme Court today prohibited the plying of 15-year-old petrol vehicles and 10-year-old diesel vehicles in Delhi-NCR region. 
    • Earlier, the NGT also sought to ban 15-year-old petrol vehicles and 10-year-old diesel vehicles.
MOUs & Agreements
  • On the 2nd day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Japan, India and Japan today signed a $75 billion bilateral currency swap agreement in Tokyo.
    • "The agreement should help bring greater stability to foreign exchange and capital markets in India," a statement said.
Science & Technology
  • Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries today  launched the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) 1st locally made satellite KhalifaSat into orbit.
    • The Japanese rocket also carried an IBUKI-2 greenhouse gas observation satellite for Japan. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The government of india has notified the sale of electoral bond by the State Bank of India (SBI) through its 29 authorized branches from 1st to 10th November 2018. 
    • An Electoral Bond is just like a promissory note that will be payable to bearer on demand and free of interest. 
    • It can be purchased by a citizen of India or anybody incorporated in India.
    • Important Points to Note
      • The concept of electoral bond was initiated in Union Budget 2017.
      • Later on Electoral bond scheme 2018 was introduced.
  • The International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) has acquired the software company Red Hat in a $34 billion cash and debt deal, marking its biggest ever acquisition till date. 
    • Red Hat will be a distinct unit within IBM’s Hybrid Cloud team.
New Appointments
  • Former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kings XI Punjab ahead of the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League.
    • He is going to replace Brad Hodge.
Sports Current Affairs
  • India and Pakistan have been declared as joint winners of the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy 2018 after the final was forfeited due to heavy rain in Oman's Muscat today. 
    • Malaysia's Faizal Saari was the top scorer of the tournament with 8 Goals. 
    • India's Harmanpreet Singh finished the edition as the second-highest scorer with six goals.
  • Mercedes' British driver Lewis Hamilton won his 5th Formula 1 world championship after finishing fourth at the Mexican Grand Prix today. 
    • Hamilton is now the joint second most successful F1 driver in history in terms of titles won. 
  • The Delhi Cabinet today approved government jobs for sportspersons from the city who excel in their respective fields. 
    • Note : In August, the Delhi Cabinet had increased the cash incentive for sportspersons for their achievements in the Olympics, the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games.

    India & Pakistan Jointly won Asian Champions Trophy 2018

    Arch-rivals India and Pakistan have been declared as joint winners of the 5th edition of Asian Hockey Champions Trophy 2018 after the final was forfeited due to heavy rain in Oman's Muscat. Both India and Pakistan have won the tournament twice before this edition. India's Harmanpreet Singh finished the edition as the second-highest scorer with six goals. Malaysia finished at the 3rd place after defeating Japan in the penalty shootouts in the bronze medal match. Malaysia's Faizal Saari was the top scorer of the tournament with 8 Goals.     • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a 3 day visit to Japan.
      • Modi today visited his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe in the Yamanashi Prefecture and discussed various issues. 
      • He has also visited the automation and robotic firm FANUC in the industrial city facing Mount Fuji. 
      • During this visit, modi will attend the 13th Annual India-Japan Bilateral Summit
      • Focus areas of 13th India Japan Bilateral Summit : To boost cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, carry out joint infrastructure projects in third countries and enhancing defence ties, including launch of talks for a logistic support pact between the two navies.
    • In a recently held referendum, Ireland voted to remove the offence of blasphemy from the constitution, with 64.85% of the voters supporting the move.
    • Pakistan's Supreme Court today reintroduced the ban on airing Indian movies and TV shows on local channels, overturning an earlier verdict by the Lahore High Court (LHC). 
      • The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) had imposed a complete ban on airing Indian content on local television and FM radio channels in 2016, which was revoked by the LHC.

    • Today (28th October 2016) is National Ayurveda Day.
      • Ayurveda is the oldest healing science. It orginated in India more than 6000 years ago.
      • The literal meaning of Ayurveda is "Knowledge of Life".
      • To celebrate this day, the Al India Institute of Ayurveda in collaboration with Ministry of AYUSH organised a programme titled ‘Run for Ayurveda’.

    • International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced that, India will become the world’s 3rd largest aviation market around 2024 surpassing the United Kingdom.

    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a 2-day visit to Japan starting October 28.
      • During this visit, he will take part in an annual summit between the two nations.
      • This will be the 13th annual summit and the fifth one to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
      • Modi will also hold bilateral talks with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe
      • Both leaders are likely to discuss issues of defence and regional security
    • Members of the European Parliament have voted in favour of a proposal to ban single-use plastics in a bid to curb marine pollution. 
      • The proposal called for a complete ban on plastic cutlery, cotton buds, drink stirrers and a reduction in the use of food and drink containers like plastic cups. 
      • The ban is likely to take effect by 2021.
    • The International Conference on Status and Protection of Coral Reefs (STAPCOR – 2018) was conculed today at Bangaram Island, Union Territory of Lakshadweep.
      • This conference was inaugurated by the Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr. Harsh Vardhan.

    Meet the new MD & CEO of Paytm Payments Bank : Satish Kumar Gupta

    The Paytm Payments Bank, a unit of One97 Communications Ltd., has appointed veteran banker Satish Kumar Gupta as it's new Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO). Gupta is going to replace Renu Satti, who stepped down as CEO in July and moved on to head the company's new retail business.

    Gupta was former deputy general manager at State Bank of India where he worked for over three decades. He then became chief project officer at National Payments Corporation of India, which manages payment products like Unified Payments Interface.

    Gupta brings over 35 years of leadership experience to Paytm Payments Bank, with prior senior roles at SBI and NPCI, the company said in a statement.

    The government today appointed new chief justices for 5 high courts. The appointments were made in courts in Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Calcutta, Gauhati and Bombay. Here is the list of newly appointed chief justices.

    Bombay High Court - NH Patil

    Justice Naresh Harishchandra Patil, a jude of the Bombay High Court, has been elevated as its chief justice. He obtained his law degree in 1979 from the Bombay University. He dealt with Constitutional, civil and criminal law during his years of legal practice at the Bombay High Court.

    Calcutta High Court - DK Gupta

    Justice Debasis Kar Gupta, a judge of the Calcutta High Court, has been elevated as Chief justice in the same court. He enrolled as an advocate in 1982. His areas of practice included constitutional, civil, labour and service law. 

    Uttarakhand High Court - Ramesh Ranganathan

    Justice Ramesh Rangnath, a judge of the Andhra Pradesh and Telengana High Court has been appointed Chief justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. He was elevated as an additional judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in May 2005. He was appointed a permanent judge in February 2006. He has previously served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Hyderabad High Court from July 30, 2016, to July 6, 2018.
