  • The 12th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit was held in Brussels, Belgium.
    • This summit was chaired by Donald Tusk (European Council President)
    • It was attended by heads of state of 51 European and Asian countries, representatives of European Union and Secretary General of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). 
    • India was represented by M. Venkaiah Naidu (Vice President). 
    • This edition of summit has prioritised issues related to trade and investment, connectivity, sustainable development, climate change, terrorism, migration, maritime security and cyberspace.
    • Theme of 12th ASEM Summit 2018 : ‘Global Partners for Global Challenges’. 
  • The 1st joint military exercise between India and Japan titled “Dharma Guardian”  will be held at the Army’s Counter-Insurgency Warfare School at Vairengte (Mizoram) from 1st to 14th November  2018. 
    • Armies of both countries will jointly train, plan and execute series of well-developed tactical drills for neutralization of likely threats that may be encountered in urban warfare scenario. 
    • Aim of Dharma Guardian 2018 : Developing mutual understanding and respect between militaries of both countries, as also facilitate in tracking worldwide phenomenon of terrorism.

Indian Bank PO Preliminary Exam Results 2018 out

Friends, the Indian Bank has released the results of it's PO Preliminary Exam 2018. As you know, the bank has invited online applications for admission to the one year Post Graduate Diploma in Banking and Finance (PGDBF) course at Indian Bank Manipal School of Banking (IBMSB), which has been set up jointly by Indian Bank and Manipal Global Education Service Pvt Ltd from 1st August 2018 to 27th August 2018 and conducted Preliminary Online Examination for the same on 6th October 2018. Now it has came out with the results of the same. You can check the list of Roll Numbers and Names of Candidates shortlisted for the Online Main Examination, which is to be held on 4th November 2018 from the official website of the Indian Bank or from below link.   • The Indian and Chinese armies are going to resume their annual bilateral military exercise 'Hand-in-Hand' in December 2018. 
    • The last 'Hand-in-Hand' exercise took place in Pune in the year 2016. 
    • The drill did not take place in 2017 due to tensions between the two armies over Doklam, where the countries were locked in a 73-day standoff.
  • Queensland today voted in favour of a bill to legalise Abortion.
    • With this it became the 5th Australian state to do so. 
    • Under the new law, women can terminate pregnancies on request at up to 22 weeks gestation, and thereafter with the approval of two doctors. 
    • Note : Abortion had been illegal in Queensland under a 19th century statute.
  • According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report, India is the world’s most depressed country, closely followed by China and the US.

Meet the winner of Man Booker Prize 2018 : Anna Burns (Milkman)

Irish author Anna Burns (56) has won this year's prestigious Man Booker Prize 2018 for her novel 'Milkman'. With this, she became the first Northern Irish author to win the Booker Prize. As winner, Burns received the award from Prince Charles' wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, as well as 50,000 pounds ($65,900).

Anna was born in Belfast and raised in the working class Catholic district of Ardoyne. The 'Milkman' was her 3rd full-length novel. Her first novel was No Bones (published in the year 2001) and second novel was Little Constructions (published in 2007).

About the Book 'Milkman'

The experimental novel, 'Milkman' was published in 2018. This novel is about an 18-year-old girl, known as "middle sister", who is sexually harassed by an older paramilitary figure, called the "milkman". It is “incredibly original”, according to the Booker’s chair of judges, the philosopher Kwame Anthony Appiah.

"It is a story of brutality, sexual encroachment and resistance threaded with mordant humour. Set in a society divided against itself, 'Milkman' explores the insidious forms oppression can take in everyday life."
