International Current Affairs
  • The White House today announced that US President Donald Trump is going to hold a 2nd summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in late February. 
    • The location of the summit would be announced later. 
    • Note : Earlier on 12 June 2018, both leaders met in Singapore and signed a joint statement, agreeing to security guarantees for North Korea, new peaceful relations, the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, recovery of soldiers' remains.
  • France today activated a plan for a no-deal Brexit after the British Parliament rejected PM Theresa May's deal. 
    • "This plan includes measures that aim to ensure that there is no interruption of rights and that the rights of our fellow citizens and our businesses are effectively protected," French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said.
    • Five decrees that will cover different aspects of Britain-France ties will be issued within three weeks.
National Current Affairs
  • Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has approved induction of women as jawans in the Army's Corps of Military Police
    • The women will be inducted in graded manner to eventually comprise 20% of total Corps of Military Police.
    • Their role would range from probing rape and molestation cases to assisting the Army wherever required.
    • Note : Currently, women are allowed in select areas such as medical, legal, educational, signals and engineering wings of the Army.
  • The Uttar Pradesh cabinet today approved the proposal to rename Mughalsarai tehsil as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya tehsil after the late RSS leader. 
    • Note : On 5th August 2018, the state government renamed Mughalsarai Junction, India's biggest British-era railway station, to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction. 
  • India's first crematorium for cows, named 'gau mukti dham', will soon be built in Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh).
Deaths
  • Philippines' richest man Henry Sy (94) passed away.
    • He started his first business after WWII selling shoes imported by US soldiers.
    • He founded SM Investments, which runs department stores, supermarkets, shopping malls and banks. 
    • According to Forbes, he had a net worth of $19 billion.
MOUs & Agreements
  • Gujarat government has signed around 130 MoUs with investment commitments worth over 56,000 crore rupees in various sectors on the first day of the three-day Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit.
  • Officials at a press meet said that a majority of the MoUs were signed in the port and transport sectors.
  • China-based Tsingshan group has committed to invest 21,000 crore rupees to set up a steel plant and a facility to manufacture car batteries.
  • Besides this mega agreement, MoUs worth over 35,000 crore rupees were also signed during the opening day of the three-day business conclave.
Science & Technology
  • Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency has launched Tokyo-based startup Star-ALE's mini-satellite aimed to deliver the world's first artificial meteor shower
    • The satellite carries 400 tiny balls, which will be enough for 20-30 events, that will glow as they rush down the atmosphere on being released. 
New Appointments
  • After the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet curtailed his tenure as the CBI Special Director, Rakesh Asthana has been appointed as the Chief of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security
  • Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, who was part of the bench that disqualified former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif from holding office over corruption, took oath as the Chief Justice of Pakistan
    • He was also part of the bench that acquitted Asia Bibi, a Christian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy charges.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Former captain Sardar Singh has been included in a 13-member Hockey India selection committee
    • Head of this Committee : BP Govinda (member of the 1975 World Cup-winning team). 
  • Ace Indian Badminton player Saina Nehwal crashed out in the Semi final's the Malaysia Masters following her straight-game loss to reigning Olympic and world champion Carolina Marin of Spain in the women's singles semifinals today. 
    • Note : Saina had last won the Malaysia Masters title in 2017.
