  • Almost 1,000-year-old Shawala Teja Singh Temple located in Sialkot city of Pakistan, which was sealed for last 72 years, has been re-opened for devotees for the 1st time since partition. 
    • Decision to reopen temple was issued by Paksitan Prime Minister Imran Khan.
  • As part of an effort to combat climate change and deforestation. , individuals in Ethiopia planted more than 35 crore trees today.
    • The planting is part of the 'Green Legacy' initiative that aims to plant 400 crore trees in Ethiopia this rainy season and is being led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
National Current Affairs
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the Jammu & Kashmir Reservation (Second Amendment) Bill, 2019.
    • This bill provides 10% reservation to the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) of the state in educational institutes and government jobs. 
  • The Rajasthan Legislative Assembly today introduced 2 bills to check incidents of mob lynching and honour killing in the state. 
    • The bills will make both offences cognisable, non-bailable and non-compoundable with life imprisonment and fine of up to ₹5 lakh. 
    • The bill also has a provision to appoint a Nodal Officer to prevent incidents of lynching in the state.
Science & Technology
  • Indian Air Force (IAF) today launched an air-combat mobile game 'Indian Air Force: A Cut Above' and it's available for those using Android and iOS devices. 
    • It also features a pilot sporting a moustache like Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman
  • Indian multinational corporation Infosys launched its state-of-the-art Cyber Defence Center in Bucharest (Romania)
    • This Defence Center is an expansion of services delivered via Infosys Digital Innovation Center which opened in Bucharest in early 2019.

  • Wing commander Tarun Chaudhri became 1st pilot of Indian Armed Forces (IAF) to do a Wing Suit Skydive Jump
    • The jump was accomplished from an altitude of 8500 feet (2590.8 meters) from a Mi-17 helicopter. 
    • This is 1st IAF Wing Suit Skydive Jump by a pilot who has flown and captained same type of helicopter.

  • Two Karnataka teenagers, Aman K A and A U Nachiketh, have won a $15,000 (around ₹10.3 lakh) National Geographic Explorer Award at the 2019 Google Science Fair competition. 
    • The duo developed an eco-friendly and cost-effective process of coagulating rubber latex using 'bimbli' fruit's extract, replacing formic acid.
MOUs & Agreements
  • India has signed Rs.1,500 crore deal to acquire R-27 air-to-air missiles from Russia for equipping Su-30MKI combat aircraft fleet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and for boosting its capabilities in beyond visual range warfare.
Deaths
  • Noted economist and former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor Subir Vithal Gokarn (60) passed away. 
    • Gokarn also represented India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bhutan at the International Monetary Fund Executive Board. 
    • He served as the Deputy Governor of the RBI between 2009 and 2013.
New Appointments
  • 1984-batch IAS officer from Jharkhand cadre, Rajiv Kumar has been appointed as the new Finance Secretary
    • Kumar has replaced 1983-batch IAS officer Subhash Chandra Garg as the Finance Secretary. 
    • Note : Garg was transferred to the Power Ministry as the secretary on July 24.
  • ITBP Director General S S Deswal was given additional charge of counter-terror force National Security Guard (NSG)
    • He will take over from incumbent NSG DG Sudeep Lakhtakia who is set to retire on 31st July 2018.
  • CafĂ© Coffee Day today appointed S V Ranganath as its interim Chairman after the death of founder-chairman V G Siddhartha.
  • BJP MLA Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri has been elected as Karnataka Assembly Speaker
Sports Current Affairs
  • Former Indian cricketer Venugopal Rao has announced his retirement from all forms of the sport.
    • The 37-year-old, who captained Andhra Pradesh's Ranji team in the past, played 16 ODIs for India before appearing in 65 IPL matches. 
  • Jamaican cricketer Chris Gayle today became the 1st cricketer to slam a hundred in Global T20 league in Canada. 
    • Gayle hit a 47-ball hundred to help his side Vancouver Knights post 276/3 against Montreal Tigers, the second-highest total by any team in T20 cricket. 
  • Batsman Prithvi Shaw has been handed a backdated suspension of eight months by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for doping violation. 
    • The period of Shaw's suspension would begin retrospectively from March 16, 2019 and end at midnight on November 15, 2019.

    Former RBI Deputy Governor Subir Gokarn Passed Away

    Noted economist and former Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Subir Vithal Gokarn passed away today. He is 60 years old.  He graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai in Economics in 1979. He had a Master’s Degree in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics and received a doctorate in Economics from Case Western Reserve University, USA in 1989.

    He served as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) between 2009 and 2013 and oversaw Monetary Policy, Research, Financial Markets, Communications and Deposit Insurance. He had the distinction of being the youngest RBI Governor at the time. He had the distinction of being the youngest deputy governor at that time. He was also associated with Brooking’s India.

    He was appointed by the Narendra Modi government as Executive Director on the board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in November 2015.Gokarn also represented India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bhutan at the International Monetary Fund Executive Board.

    He wrote a book titled "The Structure of Indian Industry" along with  Professor Anindya Sen and Dr Rajendra R. Vaidya.

      • This day was established by the UN General Assembly in the year 2013.

    National Current Affairs
    • Rajya Sabha today passed The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019. 
      • This Bill criminalises instant triple talaq and seeks up to three years in jail for guilty. 
    • The 22nd National Conference on e-Governance 2019 will be held during 8-9th August 2019 at Shillong.
      • The conference will be jointly organized by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), in association with Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India and the State Government of Meghalaya.
      • It will provide a platform to disseminate knowledge on effective methods of designing and implementing sustainable e-Governance initiatives to provide end-to-end Digital services, exchange experience in solving problems, mitigating risks, resolving issues and planning for success.
      • This conference is part of the DARPG’s 100 days initiatives in the new Government.
      • 28 States and eight Union Territories will participate in the conference.
      • Theme of the Conference : “Digital India: Success to Excellence
    • Lok Sabha today passed the Consumer Protection Bill, 2019.
      • This bill aims at protecting the interests of consumers by establishing authorities for timely and effective administration and settlement of consumers’ dispute.
    • Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee launched a unique initiative called ‘Didi Ke Bolo’ (Tell your sister) campaign to reach out to people of State. 
      • This campaign for common masses, is devised to entertain voters’ regarding various issues for which phone number (9137091370) and website www.didikaybolo.com are also launched.
    • The Rajya Sabha today passed the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Bill, 2019.
      • This bill seeks to protect small investors from ponzi schemes and prevent unregulated entities from collecting deposits from individuals. 
      • The bill provides for a jail term ranging from 1 year to 10 years for people running ponzi schemes and fine ranging from ₹2 lakh to ₹50 crore.
    • Union Culture and Tourism Minister of State (independent charge) Prahlad Patel today announced that 10 centrally protected monuments across India will be open to public from sunrise till 9 p.m.
      •  Currently gates of most monuments are closed for visitors by 5:30-6 pm.
      • Those 10 monuments are :
        1. Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi
        2. Safdarjung Tomb in Delhi
        3. Rajarani Temple in Bhubaneswar
        4. Dulhadev Temple in Khajuraho
        5. Shekh Chilli Tomb in Kurukshetra
        6. Group of Monuments at Pattadakal in Karnataka

    Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
    • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a fine of about 26 lakh rupees on 2 online payment solutions providers for non-compliance of regulatory guidelines.
      • The central bank said in a release that Mobikwik Systems Private Limited has been slapped a fine of 15 lakh rupees while Hip Bar Pvt Ltd faced a fine of 10.85 lakh rupees.
      • It stated that these two prepaid payment instrument (PPI) issuers were levied a monetary penalty for non-compliance of regulatory guidelines.
    • Nearly two years after West Bengal got Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its version of Rasgulla, Odisha today received the GI tag for "Odisha Rasagola"
      • Note : The GI tag for Rasgullas to the neighbouring states recognises two distinct varieties of the sweet in taste and texture.
    MOUs & Agreements
    • India and Mozambique have signed 2 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on sharing white shipping information and co-operation in the field of Hydrography.
      • These MOUs were signed in the presence of Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Mozambican counterpart Atanasio Salvador M’tumuke in Maputo,.
      • Note : The defense minister is on a 3 days visit to South African country, Mozambique.
    Science & Technology
    • The 6th of 8th indigenously built Landing Craft Utility (LCU) MK IV class ships 'LCU L 56' was commissioned into the Indian Navy by Vice Admiral Atul Kumar Jain, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C), Eastern Naval Command, at Visakhapatnam.
      • The LCU L56 is an amphibious ship with its primary role being transportation, deployment and recovery of main battle tanks, armoured vehicles, troops and equipment from ship to shore and vice-versa.
    New Appointments
    • Jagdeep Dhankar has been sworn in as the new Governor of West Bengal.
      • The Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court T.B Radhakrishnan administered the oath of office and Secrecy to him at a simple function in Raj Bhavan in Kolkata.
    Sports Current Affairs
    • The International Cricket Council (ICC) today officially launched the inaugural World Test Championship (WTC).
      • To be played over two years, the World Test Championship will witness the top 9 Test teams in the world compete in 71 Test matches across 27 series. 
      • The two top teams will then go head to head in the World Test Championship final to be held in the United Kingdom in 2021.
      • Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the West Indies are the 9 teams that will battle it out for the top honours in the World Test Championship.
      • The inaugural ICC World Test Championship will be played from 1st of next month to 30th April 30, 2021.
    • US sprinter Dalilah Muhammad broke the world record in women's 400 metre by finishing the race in 52.20 seconds at the US championships. 
      • The previous record of 52.34 seconds was set by Yuliya Pechonkina (Russia) on August 8, 2003. 
    • Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has announced his retirement from football at the age of 38.
      •  Evra, who earned 81 caps with the French national team, played for United between 2006 and 2014 and won five Premier League titles and the Champions League title.

      Meet Vidisha Baliyan - 1st Indian to win Miss Deaf World 2019

      A 21 year old Uttar Pradesh girl Vidisha Baliyan has been crowned Miss Deaf World for the year 2019 held in South Africa's Bombayela. With this she became the 1st Indian to win the prestigious title. The international beauty pageant was held in Mbombela, South Africa, and Vidisha was chosen among the 11 finalists from 16 participating countries in the final round. Vidisha is a modeling student of the Asian Academy of Film and Television.  She is also a former international tennis player who represented India in the Deaflympics.

      AP Grama / Ward Sachivalayam Recruitment 2019 Official Notification out - 1,26,728 Posts

      Friends, the Andhra Pradesh state government has released the official notification for the recruitment of various posts in AP Grama / Ward Sachivalayam for the year 2019.  With this notification, the AP state government is going to recruit 22 types of posts. There are 1,36,087 posts in total. As of now, the govt has released notification for 1,26,728 posts. Remaining 9,359 are of linemen posts, for which there will be a separate notification to be released. The Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) is going to conduct this recruitment drive. You can apply online from today (27th July 2019) to 10th August 2019. The selection will be based on written test which is scheduled to be held on 1st September 2019. Check complete details below.       • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be on a 3 day visit to Southeast African country Mozambique to further strengthen defence relations.
        • During the visit, Mr Singh will hold talks with the President, Defence Minister, Foreign Minister and Interior Minister of Mozambique.
        • 3 MoUs and agreements will be signed in the fields of exclusive economic zone surveillance, sharing of white shipping information and hydrography.
        • There will also be a ceremony of handing over two fast interceptor boats and 44 SUVs from India to Mozambique.
      • The US Justice Department is set to resume the use of death penalty after 16 years
        • The department has immediately scheduled executions of 5 death row federal inmates. 
        • Note : US President Donald Trump has called for increasing the use of the death penalty for drug traffickers and mass shooters.
      National Current Affairs
      • The 20th Anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas is being celebrated across the country today. 
        • The central theme of this year's celebrations is ‘Remember, Rejoice and Renew’.
        • This day marks the victory of Indian armed forces in Operation Vijay in 1999, when they evicted the infiltrators backed by Pakistani army from high outposts in Kargil sector.
        • The Kargil war was fought for more than 60 days and ended with India regaining control of all the previously held territory. 
        • The victory of Tiger Hill was one of the crucial achievements in the 60- day long conflict.
        • The celebrations of 20th Anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas began in Delhi on the 14th of this month.
        • The Victory Flame traversed through 11 towns and cities and finally reached Dras. 
        • At Drass, the victory flame was received from Major DP Singh and passed on to Param Veer Chakra awardee Yogendra Yadav and then to Army Chief Bipin Rawat to merge at Kargil War Memorial with eternal flame.
        • Defence Minister of India : Rajnath Singh
      • The Supreme Court today ordered cinema halls across the country to screen clips on prevention of child abuse and prosecution of crimes against children. 
        • The court asked the Ministry of Women and Child Development to ensure suitable clips are screened. 
        • The apex court also ordered TV channels to show these clips along with child helpline numbers.
      Science & Technology
      • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced the 2nd successful orbit-raising move of India's second Moon mission Chandrayaan-2.
        • The 3,850-kg Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft is planned to undergo three more such orbit raises before attempting India's first soft Moon landing on September 7. 
        • If successful, India will become the first in the world to land on Moon's south polar region.
      Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
      • The Lok Sabha has passed The Companies (Amendment) Bill, 2019.  
        • This Bill seeks to amend the Companies Act, 2013.
        • It aims to tighten Corporate Social Responsibility compliance, transfer certain responsibilities to National Company Law Tribunal and recatgorise certain offences as civil offences.
      • The Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today held discussions with Minister of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources of Saudi Arabia Khalid Al-Falih to further enhance bilateral hydrocarbon cooperation.
        • Both the Ministers discussed further enhancing India-Saudi Arabia hydrocarbon cooperation to become a strong pillar of the existing overall strategic partnership between the two countries. 
      New Appointments
      • Karnataka BJP President BS Yediyurappa took oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka for the 4th time today. 
        • This comes after the HD Kumaraswamy-led Congress-JD(S) coalition government collapsed after losing the confidence motion by six votes yesterday. 
      • The International Cricket Council (ICC) has appointed Pakistan Cricket Board's Chairman Ehsan Mani as Chairperson of ICC's Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee (F&CA)
      Sports Current Affairs
      • World Championships bronze medallist Simranjit Kaur (60kg) and GeeBee Boxing silver medallist Dinesh Dagar (69kg) confirmed their places in finals of the 23rd President’s Cup in Indonesia today.
        • Ankush Dahiya (64kg) and Ananta Pralhad Chopade (52kg) made it to semi-finals of the competition. 
        • Neeraj Swami (49kg) has assured himself of a medal after making his way into the semifinals.
      • Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir (27) has announced his retirement from Test cricket, saying he wants to concentrate on white-ball cricket. 
        • Amir, who was Pakistan's highest wicket-taker in the 2019 World Cup, represented his nation in 36 Tests and picked up 119 wickets. 
        • He made his Test debut against Sri Lanka as a 17-year-old in 2009.
      • 5 wrestlers including Commonwealth Games gold medallist Bajrang Punia have been selected for the 2019 Senior Wrestling World Championships
        • The tournament is the first phase to earn a spot in the 2020 Olympic Games. 
        • Other wrestlers who were selected in their respective categories are Ravi Kumar (57 kg), Deepak Punia (86 kg), Mausam (97 kg) and Sumit (125 kg).

        • A new India-UK bilateral pilot scheme has been launched to support Britain's universities to collaborate with Indian partners in order to send UK students to India during their studies.
          • The "UKEIRI Mobility Programme: Study in India", an initiative of Universities UK International (UUKi) and British Council India, opened today and aims to generate up to 200 opportunities for undergraduate students at UK universities to visit India by March 2021.
          • Priority for the programme to visit India during their courses will be given to students from traditionally under-represented groups.
        National Current Affairs
        • The Rajya Sabha today passed a bill making amendments to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act by including death penalty for aggravated sexual assault on children.
          • The bill also provides for fines and imprisonment to curb child pornography. 
          • Union Minister for Women and Child Development : Smriti Irani 
        • The Lok Sabha has passed the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill, 2019
          • The bill empowers the government to designate an individual as a terrorist if the person commits or participates in acts of terrorism, prepares for terrorism, promotes terrorism or is otherwise involved in terrorism.
        • Nalini Sriharan, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has been released on a month's parole to make arrangements for her daughter's wedding. 
          • During the term of her parole, she cannot speak to politicians or media. 
        Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
        • India is considering an option to raise $10 billion in one go from its 1st overseas bond sale in October. 
          • The government would prefer to sell yen or euro-denominated debt so as to offer lower yields.
          • Note : Former Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan recently warned that India's plan to issue bonds overseas has enormous risks but no real benefit.
        • Facebook-owned WhatsApp's payments service WhatsApp Pay will be rolling out later this year in India.
          • Facebook has been beta-testing the payments service in India with about 10 lakh users, the full roll-out of which was stuck over regulatory issues. 
          • Note : The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had said it didn't comply with the data localisation norms of India.
        • Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) becomes highest-ranked Indian company on Fortune Global 500 list
          • It has jumped 42 places and was ranked 106 this year.

          • The spacecraft aims to achieve India's first soft-landing on the Moon's surface on September 7. 
          • If successful, it'll make India the 4th country to accomplish a Moon landing and the first to reach its south polar region.
        Deaths
        • Hollywood actor Rutger Hauer (75), best known for his role in the 1982 film 'Blade Runner', passed away in the Netherlands after suffering from a brief illness. 
          • Hauer had also starred in films including 'Nighthawks', 'Dracula 3D' and 'Batman Begins'.
        New Appointments
        • Boris Johnson took over as the new Prime Minister of UK following his official appointment by Queen Elizabeth II. 
          • His appointment came minutes after his predecessor Theresa May submitted her resignation to the Queen. 
          • Johnson defeated fellow Conservative Party member Jeremy Hunt to become the party leader and the UK's next Prime Minister.
        • The Indian government has appointed 1985 batch Gujarat cadre IAS officer Atanu Chakraborty as the new Economic Affairs Secretary replacing Subhash Chandra Garg.
          • Subhash Chandra Garg will be the new Power Secretary
        • Priti Patel took charge as 1st Indian-origin Home Secretary of Britain in the newly unveiled Boris Johnson-led Cabinet. 
          • The 47-year-old has replaced Pakistani-origin Sajid Javid, who has been moved to the Treasury department as the 1st ethnic minority Chancellor of the Exchequer. 
        Books & Authors
        • A Coffee table book titled ‘Fire and Fury Corp s– Saga of Valour, Fortitude and Sacrifice,‘ a repository of exemplary valour of Fire and Fury Corps and their utmost dedication to nation was released. 
          • The book was released in Leh, in J&K by Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh on the occasion of nation celebrating 20th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas.
        Sports Current Affairs
        • The medals for Tokyo 2020 Olympics were unveiled with exactly one year to go until the next year's Games. 
          • The medals are 85 millimetres in diameter and feature Nike (Greek goddess of victory) in their design along with the Olympic symbol
          • Important Note : These medals are made from recycled metals, collected from 6.21 million electronic devices donated across Japan.
        • Former Team India captain MS Dhoni will be with his Territorial Army unit of the Parachute Regiment (106 Para TA battalion) in Kashmir from July 31 to August 15. 
          • The 38-year-old will undertake duties of patrolling, guard and post duty and will be staying with the troops. 
          • Note : Dhoni holds the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army.
