TIME magazine's Person of the Year 2018 : Guardians (4 journalists and a newspaper)

The TIME magazine has named 'The Guardians', a group of journalists and a news paper, as its 'Person of the Year 2018'.  This group of journalists' work has landed them in jail — or  cost them their lives. The group includes Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, marking the 1st year TIME has chosen a deceased (dead) person as 'Person of the Year'. The others are Filipina journalist Maria Ressa, Reuters' jailed journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, and US newspaper Capital Gazette.

The magazine gave the title – which goes to the person they judge has been the most influential over the past year – to “the Guardians and the War on Truth”. TIME selected the group "for taking great risks in pursuit of greater truths, for the imperfect but essential quest for facts that are central to civil discourse, for speaking up and speaking out." The magazine said the four individuals and the lone newspaper symbolize something bigger than themselves.

About Time Person of the year

Every December, TIME features and profiles a person, a group, an idea, or an object that "for better or for worse... has done the most to influence the events of the year" as the person of the year. Last year The Silence Breakers (#MeToo campaigners) were Time’s ‘Person of the Year’. The Person of the Year is picked by Time editors from among world leaders, artists, corporate czars and organisations who most influenced the news, for better or for worse.

Brief Intro of TIMES Person of the Year 2018 (Guardians)

  • Jamal Khashoggi : Washington Post columnist murdered for his criticism of the Saudi crown prince.
  • Maria Ressa : Editor of a Philippine news website renowned for its critical coverage of its president’s controversially violent policies.
  • Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo : Two Reuters journalists who were arrested in Myanmar while investigating a massacre of Rohingya Muslims.
  • The Capital Gazette : The news paper targeted by a gunman who opened fire into the newsroom, killing four journalists and a sales assistant.
