International Current Affairs
- Today (27th January) is International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.
- This day commemorates the genocide that resulted in the death of an estimated 6 million Jewish people, 2 million Romani people, 250,000 mentally and physically disabled people, and 9,000 homosexual men by the Nazi regime and its colalborators.
- Theme of the year 2019 : “Holocaust Remembrance: Demand and Defend Your Human Rights”
- On the 70th Republic Day, India gifted 30 ambulances and 6 buses to Nepal.
- Note : Since 1994, India has gifted 722 ambulances and 142 buses to various Nepalese organisations.
- The Indian Army is going to conduct a military exercise titled 'India-Africa Field Training' with African nations at the Aundh Military station and College of Military Engineering in Pune.
- Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Senegal, Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia, Namibia, Mozambique and Uganda will be participating in the joint military exercise.
- The exercise is scheduled to be held between March 18 to 27, 2019.
- Aim of this Exercise : To synergise United Nations peacekeeping operations.
National Current Affairs
- The word 'Nari Shakti' (women empowerment) has been chosen as the Hindi Word of the Year 2018 by Oxford Dictionaries.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi today laid the foundation stone of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai.
- To provide regular pension to Non Resident Keralites, the Kerala government will soon launch a 'Pravasi Dividend Pension Scheme'.
- The scheme has been introduced by the government of Kerala as part of welfare measures towards Pravasi Malayalis.
- Under the scheme, a regular pension would be provided to Non-Resident Keralites on a one-time payment of Rs 5 lakh.
- This onetime payment would be deposited with KIIFB (Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board) for financing infrastructure projects.
- A special tourist train named ‘Samantha Express’, covering prominent places associated with chief architect of the Indian Constitution Dr BR Ambedkar and Gautam Buddha will embark on its maiden journey on April 14 from Nagpur.
- The train will cover Chaityabhoomi (Mumbai), Mhow (Indore), Bodhgaya (Gaya), Sarnath (Varanasi), Lumbini (Nautanwa), Kushinagar (Gorakhpur), Deekshabhoomi (Nagpur), all places linked with either Lord Buddha or Ambedkar.
MOUs & Agreements
- State-run telecom firm Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has signed a business partnership agreement with French company Be-Bound.
- Aim of this MoU : To offer data connectivity through SMS in areas where there is no Internet connectivity or signal breaks.
- The Swedish aerospace and defence company (Saab) and Airports Authority of India (AAI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore air traffic management (ATM) solutions for airports operating under the regional connectivity scheme, UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik).
Awards & Honors
- Kannada author Jayant Kaikini was named the winner of the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2018 for his translated work titled "No Presents Please".
- No Presents Please, a collection of stories set in Mumbai, was originally written in the southern Indian language of Kannada and translated into English by the award-winning translator Tejaswini Niranjana.
- The novel presents illustrate life in Mumbai with the Mumbai City presented as a protagonist of a coherent narrative.
- The $25,000 (£19,100) prize, which rewards the best writing about south Asian culture from writers of any ethnicity and from all over the world, will be split equally between author and translator.
- Note : For the first time the award was being given to a translated work.
- Commander Vijay Varma, a pilot in the Indian Navy, has been awarded the Nao Sena Medal for gallantry.
- Varma had rescued 24 survivors, including two pregnant women, during the 2018 Kerala floods.
- Note : The Nao Sena Medal was also conferred on Naval Commander Abhilash Tomy, who had suffered a back injury while participating in the Golden Globe Race 2018.

- World number one Novak Djokovic defeated world number two Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the Men's singles final today to win Australian Open for a record 7th time.

- Indian professional badminton singles player Saina Nehwal became the 1st Indian woman to win Indonesia Masters title after her opponent Carolina Marin pulled out due to injury during the first game in the final.
- India's Kartik Sharma won the New South Wales men's Amateur Golf Championship in Australia.
- Kartik had also won the Indian golf union western India amateur golf championship 2018.
