International Current Affairs
  • Today (21st January) is Squirrel Appreciation Day.
  • The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has recognised Rio de Janeiro as the 'World Capital of Architecture' for 2020.
    • Having defeated Paris and Melbourne, Rio was selected to host the 27th edition of the World Congress of the International Union of Architects (UIA) in July 2020.
    • Note : The "World Capitals of Architecture" initiative was launched by UNESCO and UIA in November 2018.
  • Aadhaar cards are now valid travel documents for Indians under 15 and over 65 travelling to Nepal and Bhutan. 
    • Note : Indians other than those in the two age brackets will not be able to use Aadhaar to travel to these countries.
National Current Affairs
  • Today (21st January) is the 47th Statehood Day of 3 states Manipur, Tripura and Meghalaya.
    • The three states attained statehood on this day in the year 1972 under the North-Eastern Areas (Re-organisation) Act, 1971.
    • While Meghalaya was a part of Assam before becoming a full-fledged state, Manipur and Tripura were Union Territories before 1972.
  • Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas began at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh this morning. 
    • Theme for this year Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2019 : "Role of Indian Diaspora in building New India".
    • Addressing NRIs, especially youth who have arrived from different parts of the globe, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj invited them for investment in the field of education. 
    • Chief guests  for the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas :
      • Kanwal Jeet Singh Bakshi (Member of Parliament, New Zealand)
      • Himanshu Gulati (Member of Parliament, Norway) 
    • Important Note : Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally inaugurate the event tomorrow, with Pravind Kumar  Jugnauth (Prime Minister of Mauritius) being the Chief Guest.

  • 2002 batch UP Cadre IPS officer,  Aparna Kumar became the 1st woman IPS officer to reach the South Pole
    • She achieved this feat despite suffering from pneumonia just before leaving for the expedition, 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Odisha government today hiked the social security allowance under Madhu Babu Pension Yojana (MBPY).
    • As per the announcement which will come into effect from February 15, the old-age pension for senior citizens has been revised to Rs 500 from Rs 300. 
    • Similarly, for people who are 70 years old and above, the allowance has been increased to Rs 700 from Rs 500.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Armoured Systems Complex (ASC), developed by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) at Hazira near Surat in Gujarat. 
    • This Armoured Systems Complex (ASC) is India’s 1st private facility where the K9 Vajra self-propelled Howitzer guns will be manufactured.
  • Microsoft India today launched a new e-commerce platform for handloom weavers under its Project ReWeave, as part of its philanthropic initiative.
    • The e-commerce platform would help connect artisans to the buyers directly enabling them to expand to newer customers and markets.
Deaths
  • Masazo Nonaka (113), who was recognised as the world's oldest man by Guinness World Records last year, has passed away.
  • Dr Shivakumara Swami (111), the seer who headed the Sree Siddaganga Mutt in Karnataka's Tumakuru, passed away. 
    • He was often known as "the walking god". 
  • Tony Mendez (78), a CIA agent who was portrayed by Ben Affleck in the 2012 Oscar-winning film 'Argo', has passed away.
    • Mendez was best known for smuggling six American diplomats out of Iran during the 1979-81 hostage crisis
Awards & Honors
  • Eminent scientist and Bharat Ratna awardee C N R Rao has been chosen for the 1st Sheikh Saud International Prize for Materials Research, given by the Centre for Advanced Materials of the UAE.
    • The award involves a plaque, a medal and a cash prize of USD 100000.
    • The award will be presented to Rao during the International Workshop on Advanced Materials in Ras Al Khaima,UAE, on 25th February 2019.
  • Himachal Pradesh BJP MP Anurag Thakur has been bestowed with Sansad Ratna (“Gem of Parliament”) Award for his distinguished performance as a parliamentarian under Jury Committee Special Award category. 
    • 12 parliamentarians including Thakur were honoured with the Sansad Ratna award, which was set up in 2010 on suggestion of ex-President APJ Abdul Kalam. They are :
      • Rajeev Shankarrrao Satav (MP from Hingoli, Maharashtra) - for his outstanding performance among the first-time parliamentarians.
      • Bhartruhari Mahtab (MP from Cuttack, Odisha) - for his performance in initiating debates.
      • Standing committee on finance headed by M Veerappa Moily - for outstanding performance among the Parliamentary Standing Committees.
      • N K Premachandran (MP from Kollam, Kerala) - for his performance in initiating debates.
      • Supriya Sule (MP from Baramati (Maharashtra) - In overall tally, questions and women MPs categories.
      • Nishikant Dubey (MP from Godda, Jharkhand) - for his outstanding performance in private member bills.
      • Ananda Bhaskar Rapolu (MP from Telangana) - for debates among the retirees of the upper House.
      • Shrirang Appa Barne (MP from Maval, Maharashtra) - for his outstanding performance.
      • Bhimrao Mahadik (MP from Kolhapur, Dhananjay) - for his performance under questions and overall tally category.
      • Heena Vijaykumar Gavit - for her outstanding performance (raised 1,059 questions in the Lok Sabha and holds an attendance of 82 per cent).
      • Rajani Patil was selected as the topper in overall tally among the retirees of Rajya Sabha.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The Khelo India Youth Games 2019 concluded in Pune yesterday with the hosts Maharashtra walking away with the overall trophy.
    • About Khelo India Youth Games 2019 :
      • Earlier Known as : Khelo India School Games
      • Purpose : Grassroot talent hunt
      • Started on : 9th Jauary 2019
      • Ended on : 20th January 2019

      • 3rd Team : Delhi - 136 Medals (48 Gold, 37 Silver, 51 Bronze)
  • India's Ankita Raina has won the International Tennis Federation's 25,000-dollar Women's tournament in Singapore today. 
    • In the Final, she defeated top seed and world number 122 Arantxa Rus (Netherlands).
