  • World Heart Day is being observed on 29th September 2019.
    • The World Heart Day is an international campaign held on 29th September by the World Heart Foundation to inform people about cardiovascular diseases, which are the biggest cause of death.
    • This day promotes preventative measures to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
    • Theme of World Heart Day 2019 : "My Heart, Your Heart
  • World Rabies day was observed on 28th September 2019.
    • World Rabies Day is an international campaign coordinated by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, a non-profit organization with headquarters in the US and UK.
    •  Theme of World Rabies Day 2019 : “Rabies: Vaccinate to eliminate
  • A joint military exercise between India and Kazakhstan named KAZIND-2019 is scheduled to be held in Pithoragarh district, Uttarkhand from 3-15 October 2019.
    • The main focus of this exercise is counter terrorism operation.

  • Finance Ministry in a notification announced the deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar has been extended from September 30 to December 31, 2019
    • The government is yet to notify the implications in case the linkage isn't done by the specified deadline. 
    • The rule regarding the consequences of not linking PAN with Aadhaar was revised in the 2019 Budget.
  • Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today launched 'WING - Women Rise Together', a capacity development programme for women-led startups. 
    • Supported by the government's Startup India, the programme aims to support aspiring and established female entrepreneurs by giving them access to incubation, workshops and investors.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has initiated Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) against Lakshmi Vilas Bank (LVB) due to high level of bad loans, lack of sufficient capital to manage risks and negative return on assets for two consecutive years.
    • The RBI move comes amidst the Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing registering a complaint against the board of LVB alleging cheating and misappropriation of funds.
  • India is among the top 20 countries that have improved the most on the World Bank's Ease of Doing Business 2020 report.
    • India made it easier to do business in four areas measured by the bank's annual survey such as starting a business, resolving insolvency, trading across borders and construction permits.
    • Note : The detailed report will be published on October 24.
  • The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has banned the export of all varieties of onions with immediate effect amid rising prices. 
    • Price of onions touched as much as ₹80 per kilogram in several states across the country.
  • The Indian Railways has now enabled QR code-based paperless ticket booking at 12 stations of the North Western Railway (NWR) zone.
    • Travellers can book unreserved tickets at the last minute using the facility.

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today launched INS Nilgiri.
    • INS Nilgiri is the first of the Indian Navy's seven new stealth frigates featuring enhanced stealth features, weapons and sensors.
Deaths
  • Former Foreign Secretary K.P.S. Menon (Jr.) (90) passed away.
    • Mr. Menon was Foreign Secretary from 1987 to 1989. 
    • A 1951 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), he had also served as Ambassador to Bangladesh, Egypt, Japan, Hungary and China.
  • Mexican singer and six-time Grammy Award nominee José José (71) passed away.
    • Referred by his fans as 'El Príncipe de la Canción' (The Prince of Song), José had been battling pancreatic cancer. 
  • Joseph Wilson (69), the American diplomat who challenged former US President over the invasion of Iraq, has passed away.
    • He had disproved allegations used by the Bush administration as grounds for invasion that then-Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein had bought uranium from Africa. 
    • He was the acting ambassador to Iraq in the run-up to the 1991 Gulf War.

  • Vice President, M Venkaiah Naidu today presented the prestigious Saraswati Samman award to Telegu poet K Siva Reddy for his collection of poems titled Pakkaki Ottigilite (Turning Aside While Lying Down).
    • This award was conferred by the KK Birla Foundation.
  • Bollywood Actor Ayushmann Khurrana won the Actor of the Year award at the 11th edition of GQ Men of the Year Awards held in Mumbai. 
    • Shahid Kapoor won the Ultimate GQ Man award and the Rule Breaker of the Year award went to Katrina Kaif
    • Hrithik Roshan was given the Game Changer of the Year award.
  • Eminent Archeologist Dr. G.B. Deglurkar was conferred with prestigious Punyabhushan Award for his long-standing contribution to the field of Indian Archaeology through renowned Deccan College Post graduate & Research Institute. 
  • On the occasion of World Tourism Day, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu has presented the National Tourism Awards for the year 2017-18. Here are some important names :

    • Today (27th September) is World Tourism Day.
      • The purpose of this day is to raise awareness on the role of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide.
      • The World Tourism Day celebration was started by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in the year 1980.
      • This date was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted. The adoption of these Statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism. 
      • The official celebrations this year's World Tourism Day took place in Budapest, Hungary.
      • In India, the celebrations began in Goa and are organised by Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC). 
      • Theme of World Tourism Day 2019 : “Tourism and Jobs – A better future for all
    • India advanced 4 places from 48th to the 44th in the recently released IMD World Digital Competitiveness ranking 2019

    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani met today in New York. 
      • Both leaders discussed bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest.
      • The meeting took place amid tensions between Iran and the US, and the two leaders also exchanged views on the situation.
    • Saudi Arabia will offer tourist visas for the 1st time, launching a new visa regime for 49 countries
      • Female tourists will not be required to wear the body-covering abaya robe but will be required to wear "modest clothing". 
      • Note : Saudi visas are currently restricted to expat workers, their dependents and Muslim pilgrims travelling to holy sites in Mecca and Medina.
    • At an annual BRICS meeting on the margins of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly today, the BRICS nations called for the need for early adoption of a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT)
      • "The ministers reiterated their strong condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations whenever, wherever and by whomsoever committed", a statement released by the countries stated.
    • To tackle Islamophobia, Pakistan, Turkey and Malaysia will jointly launch an English language TV channel.
      • The announcement came following a meeting between the three countries' leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session.
      • Series and films would be produced on Muslim history to educate/inform our own people and the world.

    • The residents of Delhi can avail the three emergency services of Police, Fire brigade and Ambulance by dialling a single number 112.
      • A person can dial 112 from phone or press the power button thrice on smartphone quickly to activate a panic call to Emergency Response Centre (ERC).
    • With an aim to spread awareness about nutrition of children and women, the Department of Women & Child Development and Mission Shakti, Government of Odisha, in collaboration with United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) unveiled a mascot named ‘Tikki Mausi’. 
      • The state government initiative highlights that Women and children are central to any welfare programme.
      • Tikki Mausi is gregarious character and is an empathetic protagonist with extensive knowledge on all issues related to women and children, thus loves to talk to people and raise their awareness on key positive social behaviors and practices.
      • The mascot has been named so in reference to second mother of a child.
    • In line with India’s intended target of becoming TB-free India before 2025, the ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched ‘TB Harega, Desh Jeetega’ campaign in New Delhi. 
      • Along with the campaign government also launched ‘National TB Prevalence Survey’, the country’s largest-ever conducted TB prevalence survey.
      • Note : The global target to eliminate TB worldwide is 2030.

    • Delhi Police has filed an FIR against Lakshmi Vilas Bank's board directors, on a complaint by Religare Finvest (RFL)
      • The FIR alleged the directors misappropriated ₹790 crore that RFL kept with the bank as a fixed deposit. 
    Science & Technology
    • American multinational technology company Google is celebrating its 21st birthday today (September 27, 2019).
      • Google was founded by PhD students Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University. 
      • They named its “Googol”. Googol is a mathematical term and it equals to 10 raised to the power of 100.

    • The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has been selected as the best airport in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of services it offered to passengers. 
      • CIAL topped in the 5-15 million passenger category in Airport Service Quality's (ASQ) annual survey conducted by Airport Council International (ACI). 
    • Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has been conferred with prestigious ‘Vaccine Hero’ award of Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunisations (GAVI) in recognition of Bangladesh’s outstanding success in vaccination to immunise children. 
    • President of India Ram Nath Kovind, presented Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prizes 2019, for outstanding contributions in science and technology at a function held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. Here is the winners list in various categories :

      International Current Affairs
      • Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with United Nations chief Antonio Guterres and other world leaders, inaugurated the 50 kilowatt Gandhi Solar Park at the headquarters of the UN in New York. 
        • The leaders also released a commemorative postage stamp of Mahatma Gandhi issued by the United Nations at the programme 'Leadership Matters: Relevance of Mahatma Gandhi in the Contemporary World'.
      • Army Chief General Bipin Rawat has confirmed that Balakot terror camp has been reactivated by Pakistan very recently, almost 7 months after Indian Air Force jets bombed the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist facility there.
      • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been nominated by President Reuven Rivlin to form the country's next government. 
        • Netanyahu's Likud party has won 32 seats and needs support from at least 61 out of the total 120 MPs to form the government. 
      • The Australian capital of Canberra has become the 1st city in the country to legalise, possessing and growing marijuana for personal use.
      National Current Affairs
      • The Election Commission of India has announced that elections for Maharashtra and Haryana Assemblies will be held on October 21. 
        • The elections will be held in a single phase for 288 seats in Maharashtra and 90 seats in Haryana. 
        • The counting of votes for both the states will take place on October 24.
      • Rajasthan's cultural festival 'Abhaneri Festival', named after the village Abhaneri in the Dausa district, is being held from September 30 to October 1. 
        • Abhaneri is popular for the Chand Baori stepwell, one of the largest stepwells built over a thousand years ago. 
        • The festival will witness various Rajasthani & local folk performances like Kachhi Ghori, Kalbeliya, Ghoomar and Bhawai.
      • Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that a mobile app will be used in 2021 census
        • This will be the first time in the history of census in India that data will be collected through a mobile app. 
      • The Supreme Court is going to have a permanent 5-judge Constitution bench from October 1 to decide cases related to the interpretation of Constitution, statutes, and laws. 
        • Presently, the Constitution bench, comprising a minimum of five judges, is set up on a reference made by a 3-judge bench on complex questions of law, which require authoritative pronouncement.
      • Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath laid the foundation stone of the Bhopal metro rail project to be set up at a cost of ₹6,941.4 crore. 
        • The Bhopal metro will be called 'Bhoj Metro', named after Raja Bhoj, the city's erstwhile ruler. 
        • Around 28 metro stations, including two underground, will be built under the project.
      Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
      • The RBI has prescribed a Turn Around Time (TAT) framework to reverse failed digital transactions. 
        • It directed banks to auto-reverse failed ATM transactions, when the amount is debited but not dispensed, within five days
        • It also prescribed a ₹100-per-day penalty for delay in resolution, adding the amount should be transferred to customers' accounts without waiting for them to file claims.
      • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) increased the withdrawal limit for crisis-hit Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank's customers from the earlier ₹1,000 to ₹10,000 for 6 months. 
        • With this relaxation, over 60% of the depositors of Mumbai-based bank will be able to withdraw their entire account balance. 
        • The ₹10,000 limit includes ₹1,000 already withdrawn by the customers.
      • Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced that the national capital will soon become the "1st state" to implement the Street Vending Act, 2014, to provide legal protection to street vendors and hawkers. "
      • The government has notified an 8.65% interest rate on Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) for 2018-19. 
        • Around ₹54,000 crore will be credited to the accounts of over 6 crore subscribers of retirement fund body Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).
        • This is 10 basis points higher than the EPF interest rate of 8.55% in 2017-18.
      • The government has reconstituted the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister for a period of 2 years, effective from today (26th September 2019). 
        • Bibek Debroy will continue to be the Chairman and Ratan P Watal will continue to be the Member Secretary. 
        • While Ashima Goel continues to be one of the part-time members, Sajjid Chinoy was named as the second part-time member.
      • PM Narendra Modi in an India-Pacific Islands Developing States (PSIDS) Leaders' Meeting announced a $150 million line of credit to the member nations for undertaking solar, renewable energy and climate-related projects.
        • Modi also announced the allocation of a $12-million grant to PSIDS ($1 million each) towards the implementation of high impact developmental projects.

      • The United States signed a deal with El Salvador to help the Central American nation give refuge to more asylum seekers. 
        • Individuals arriving at the US-Mexico border through El Salvador should be able to seek protection there even if they intend to apply for asylum in the US.

        • Note : This increased the strength of judges in the SC to 34 which is the highest in its history. 
      • Former BCCI president N Srinivasan's daughter Rupa Gurunath is set to become the 1st  woman president of a BCCI affiliated unit as she will take over the position of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) head. 
      • Army chief General Bipin Rawat will take over as the Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC).
        • He will replace Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa who will be retiring by the end of this month. 
        • Note : The senior-most among the chiefs of the three services is appointed as the chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee.
      • Noida-based fintech giant Paytm has promoted its Senior Vice President of Finance Vikas Garg as the startup's Deputy Chief Financial Officer
      Science & Technology
      • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) successfully launched the RamanSat 2 miniature satellite designed by 17-year-old student Aabhaas Sikka
        • The satellite was developed by Sikka during his internship with SPACE India with help from SPACE Group Founder and CMD Sachin Bahmba along with the company's research team.
        • It is carrying equipment to measure the radiation from Sun and space.
      • ISRO chief K Sivan has announced that India's Mangalyaan mission, which was initially meant to last 6 months, completed 5 years of orbiting Mars. 
        • "It's working and continuously sending pictures. It still has some time to go," he added. 
      • The UAE's Hazzaa AlMansoori has become the 1st Arab astronaut to reach the International Space Station (ISS)
        • Hazzaa was a part of the UAE's armed forces and had worked as a military pilot. 
      Books & Authors
      • A book titled 'Sridevi: The Eternal Screen Goddess', which is based on the late actress Sridevi's life is going to be released soon.
        • The book is written by author-screenwriter Satyarth Nayak.
        • Bollywood Actor Kajol has penned the foreword of the book.
      Deaths
      • Former French President Jacques Chirac (86) passed away.
        • He served as President for two terms spanning 12 years between 1995-2007 and had twice served as the Prime Minister of the country. 
        • One of Chirac's political reforms was to cut the presidential term of office from 7 years to 5 years.
      • Former India Test opener Madhav Apte (86) passed away.
        • Apte was the 4th-oldest living Indian Test cricketer
        • He played seven Tests for India, scoring 542 runs at an average of 49.27 from November 1952 to April 1953. 
        • He played 67 first-class matches, scoring 3,336 runs and slamming six centuries.
      • Telugu actor Venu Madhav (50) passed away due to kidney-related ailments.
        • The actor is known for his role in films like, 'Sampradayam', 'Master', 'Tholi Prema', 'Yuvaraju', 'Simhadri', among others.
      Awards & Honors
      • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has received the 'Global Goalkeeper Award' for the 'Swachh Bharat' campaign from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. 
        • At the same event, Payal Jangid, a 17-year-old campaigner against child labour and child marriage in Rajasthan, was given the Changemaker Award by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. 
      • The Government of India has instituted the highest civilian award in the field of contribution to the unity and integrity of India, in the name of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
        • The award will be announced on the occasion of the National Unity Day, the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel (October 31). 
        • This award would consist of a medal and a citation.
      • 16 year old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has been awarded the 2019 Right Livelihood Award (also known as Sweden's 'alternative Nobel Prize'). 
        • She was recognised "for inspiring and amplifying political demands for urgent climate action reflecting scientific facts".

      • Zoya Akhtar directorial 'Gully Boy', starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles, has been declared as India's official entry for the 92nd Academy Awards (OSCARS) in the Best International Feature Film category. 
        • 'Super Deluxe', 'AndhaDhun' and 'Article 15' were among the other films considered by the jury. 
        • Note : The Academy Awards will be held on February 9, 2020.
      • NDTV's Ravish Kumar was awarded the 1st Gauri Lankesh Memorial Award for Journalism by the Gauri Lankesh Memorial Trust. 
      • Bollywood Actor Amitabh Bachchan has been unanimously selected for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2019. 
        • Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the highest and most acclaimed award in Indian cinema conferred upon a veteran luminary in appreciation of his or her lifetime cinematic achievement.
      • Hollywood actor Tom Hanks will be honoured with Cecil B DeMille Award at the Golden Globe Awards on January 5, 2020.
        • The award recognises an individual who has made a lasting impact on the film industry. 
      • Billy Porter became the 1st openly gay black man to win the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for 'Pose' at 71st Emmy Awards 2019
        • Jodie Comer won the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for 'Killing Eve'. 
        • The award for Outstanding Television Movie went to 'Black Mirror: Bandersnatch', while 'Chernobyl' was named Outstanding Limited Series.
        • 'Game of Thrones' season 8 won the Outstanding Drama Series award.

      • Rohtak-born batsman Shafali Verma has become the youngest Indian to play a T20I, achieving the feat at the age of 15 years and 239 days against South Africa. 
        • Note : The previous record was held by Sneha Deepthi, who had made her debut at the age of 16 years and 204 days against Bangladesh in 2013.
      • Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup-winning US co-captain Megan Rapinoe were named The Best FIFA Men's and Women's Player, respectively. 
        • Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp and former US women's football team coach Jill Ellis won The Best Men's and Women's Coach award, respectively. 
        • Hungarian footballer Daniel Zsori won the Puskás Award for his overhead kick goal.

          • Post Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics (PGDBA) jointly offered by ISI Kolkata, IIT Kharagpur and IIM Calcutta with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade in aggregate of all semesters/years.

        • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a 7-day visit to United States tonight.
          • During this visit, Mr. Modi will be in Houston and New York and address the United Nations General Assembly on 27th September.
          • He will address Indian community on  22nd of  this month and US President Donald Trump will also be there. 
          • On 24th September, India will organize an event to commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in the UN. 
          • Mr. Modi will be joined by heads of some countries including President of South Korea, Prime Ministers of  Singapore, New Zealand, Bangladesh and Jamaica as well as the UN Secretary General.
          • During the visit, Mr. Modi will also be honoured with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's Global Goalkeeper's Award for his leadership in field of sanitation through Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
        • Pakistan once again faced a major embarrassment over its stand on Jammu and Kashmir. 
          • Pakistan attempts at pushing through a resolution in United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) against India with regards to alleged human rights violation in Kashmir fell flat as it did not get support of even one country.  
        • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Mongolian President Khaltmaagiin Battulga today jointly unveiled a statue of Lord Buddha at Gandan Monastery in Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia's capital) through video-conferencing in New Delhi. 
          • Gandan Tegchenling Monastery is a prominent centre of Mongolian Buddhists and a treasure house of valuable Buddhist heritage. 
          • Note : The Mongolian President arrived in New Delhi yesterday on a five-day state visit to India.

        • Kerala High Court has held that Right to access Internet is part of the fundamental right to education and right to privacy under Article 21 of the Constitution.
        • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy directed that private practice by government doctors be banned and they be financially compensated in lieu of the loss incurred. 
          • The decision was based on the recommendations of an expert committee on healthcare headed by Dr Sujatha Rao
        • Government's direct benefit transfer scheme Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) has achieved a significant milestone by crossing one crore beneficiaries
          • Under this scheme, cash benefits are provided to pregnant women in their bank account directly to meet enhanced nutritional needs and partially compensate for wage loss. 
          • The scheme, under which the beneficiaries receive a cash benefit of five thousand rupees in three installments, was launched on 1st of January in 2017.
          • Important Note : Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Rajasthan are the top 5 States and Union Territories in the country in implementation of the scheme. 
        • Union Ministry of Home Affairs has announced to set up world-class National Police University (NPU) in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh
          • The proposed multi-disciplinary university will provide dynamic, state-of-the-art learning and working environment for advancement and dissemination of education and research in policing science and related areas.
        Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
        • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today proposed to reduce corporate tax rates for domestic companies and new manufacturing companies ahead of the 37th GST Council Meeting. 
          • She added domestic companies would have option to pay income tax at 22% if they don't avail any exemptions or incentives from financial year 2020. 
        • The Jammu and Kashmir government has postponed the J&K Investor Summit to next year. 
          • The government, in consultation with the Centre, decided to reschedule the summit so as to give the Industries and Commerce Department reasonable time to make necessary preparations for the summit. 
          • Earlier, the summit was scheduled to be held from October 12-14, 2019.
        • Nasscom’s Data Security Council of India (DSCI) has collaborated with Union Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) and Google India to launch nationwide awareness campaign ‘Digital Payment Abhiyan’.
          • This campaign aims at increasing awareness about cashless payment, educate end-users on the benefits of making digital payments, online financial security and urge them to adopt security and safety best practices.
          • It is pan-India campaign crafted in seven languages — Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali and Marathi.
        • The India Post has expanded speed post service to 6 new foreign destinations namely Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Ecuador, Kazakhstan, Lithuania and North Macedonia
          • The Express Mail Service (EMS) to these 6 countries will henceforth be available at major post offices across India.
          • India Post currently provides speed post service to nearly 100 countries.

        • The ICC has suspended Sri Lanka spinner Akila Dananjaya from bowling in international cricket for 12 months because of an illegal action. 
          • The 25-year-old was reported after Sri Lanka's first Test against New Zealand in Galle in August. 
        • A day after Vinesh Phogat became the 1st Indian wrestler to qualify for 2020 Olympics, CWG 2018 gold medallist Bajrang Punia and Ravi Dahiya qualified for Olympics after winning their respective quarter-finals in World Wrestling Championships.

            • This is the 1st visit by a Mongolian President to India in last 10 years. 
            • During this visit, Battulga is expected to meet President Ram Nath Kovind and PM Narendra Modi tomorrow.  
          • Days after a face-off between Indian and Chinese forces in Ladakh sector, Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh has presided over a high-altitude warfare military exercise in Eastern Ladakh
            • Lieutenant General Singh oversaw the integrated exercise of all arms in super high altitude area and complimented all ranks for an outstanding display of warfighting capability under challenging conditions.
          National Current Affairs
          • Uttarakhand government has made Sanskrit language compulsory in all government and private schools from classes 3 to 8. 
          • Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved initiating the work of writing the history of the country's borders.
            • The work will cover various aspects of borders including tracing its making and unmaking, shifting of borders, role of security forces and borderland people.
            • The project is expected to be completed within two years, it added.
          • The state government of Telangana has decided to declare 2020 as Year of Artificial Intelligence and thus will be organising various activities related to emerging technology throughout the year. 
            • This comes in the backdrop of emerging talent pool as well as renewed focus by industry and other ecosystem players on AI space in last 4-5 years.
          • A National Seminar on ‘Emerging Trends in Public Architecture’ was held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. 
            • The seminar was organized by Central Public Works Department as part of Nationwide Awareness Campaign during ongoing ‘Construction Technology Year’. 
            • Note : In a bid to increase the use of modern technologies in the construction sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that April 2019-March 2020 would be taken up as the ‘Year of Construction Technology.

          • NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter failed to capture images of Chandrayaan-2's Vikram lander after it passed over its landing site.
            • "The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera acquired images around the targeted landing site, but the exact location of the lander wasn't known so the lander may not be in the camera field of view," NASA announced.
          Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
          • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced that the state-run banks along with NBFCs will hold meetings in shamianas at public places to lend to retail customers. 
            • The meetings will take place till September 29 in 200 districts and from October 10-15 in another 200 districts. 
            • The banks have been told to bring five fresh customers for loans for every existing customer.
          • Union Cabinet has approved payment of Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) equivalent to 78 days wages to eligible non-gazetted railway employees for Financial Year (FY) 2018-19. 
            • The eligible non-gazetted railway employees for payment of PLB exclude Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF) personnel.

          • Bollywood Actor Ranveer Singh was named Best Actor for 'Padmaavat', while Alia Bhatt received the Best Actress award for 'Raazi' at the 20th IIFA Awards held in Mumbai.
            • Hindi-language spy thriller film 'Raazi' directed by Meghna Gulzar, was named Best Picture. Starring Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, the film is about a Kashmiri spy married to a Pakistan man during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. 
            • Note : This was the first time IIFA Awards were held in India.
          • Super 30 Founder and mathematician Anand Kumar has been felicitated with Education Excellence Award 2019 by non-profit organisation Foundation For Excellence in US's California.

            • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will embark on a 3-day official visit to Finland tomorrow. 
              • This will be his maiden visit to Finland after assuming charge as External Affairs Minister.
              • During the visit, the Minister will have detailed discussions with Foreign Minister of Finland, Pekka Haavisto, on a broad spectrum of bilateral relations. 
              • He will call on the President and the Prime Minister of Finland.
              • The External Affairs Minister will also unveil the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Finland. 
            • The Indonesian Parliament has raised the minimum age at which women can marry from 16 to 19 in a bid to curb child marriages. 
              • Previously parents could ask religious courts or officials to authorise the marriages of girls aged below 16. 
              • Note : One in four girls in Indonesia is married before they turn 18, according to Indonesia's Statistics Agency and UNICEF.
            • Sri Lanka today unveiled South Asia's tallest tower, the Lotus Tower, in the capital Colombo. 
              • Constructed in the shape of a 356-metre lotus, the tower has been built at a cost of $104.3 million, 80% of which has been funded by the Chinese government.
            • Russia is holding its annual Center-2019 International Command Exercise involving 6 other nations from 16 to 21 September 2019. 
              • Center-2019 is an annual strategic and operational military exercises which aren’t aimed at any third-party country rather focus on counterterrorist operations and is purely defensive in nature.

            • The Union Cabinet has banned the production, manufacturing, import, export, distribution and advertisement of e-cigarettes after considering their impact on the youth. 
              • First-time offenders would face a prison term of up to one year and a fine of ₹1 lakh, while repeat offenders would face jail terms of up to three years, with a penalty of up to ₹5 lakh.
              • Note : E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that produce an aerosol by heating a solution containing nicotine which is the addictive substance in combustible cigarettes.
            • The 5th International Ramayan Festival organized by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) is being held from 17-19 September 2019 in New Delhi
              • The maiden day of festival was presided by Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah as Chief Guest.
            Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
            • Indian Bank today announced that the board has given its in-principle approval for the merger of Allahabad Bank with itself.
              • It also cleared the proposed infusion of capital by the government up to Rs 5,000 crore in the bank by way of preferential issue of shares.
              • After the amalgamation, the combined entity will have over 6,100 branches across the country and overseas presence in 3 countries.
            • Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal today announced taht the government is going to shut down state-owned trading companies such as State Trading Corporation (STC), Project and Equipment Corporation (PEC) and MMTC (Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation) one by one. 
            • In a bid to boost domestic manufacturing, the government has removed 5 per cent custom duty imposed on import of open cell TV panel, which are used in the manufacturing of LED TVs. 
              • The move would also help to reduce the price of TV panel by around three per cent.
            Science & Technology
            • Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully flight-tested air-to-air missile Astra off the coast of Odisha. 
              • The missile was launched from a Sukhoi Su-30 MKI combat aircraft as a part of User trials.
            • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has signed MoUs with  Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to develop human-centric systems for India's first manned space mission Gaganyaan
              • DRDO will provide critical technologies including space food, survival kits for the crew, radiation protection equipment, among others.
            • The Maharashtra government announced that it will tie-up with US firm Zipline to use autonomous delivery drones to deliver emergency medicines and critical care across the state. 
              • The initiative will be supported through a grant from Serum Institute of India (SII). 
            • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will fly in the indigenously-built Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas in Bengaluru tomorrow. 
              • Tejas, designed and developed by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Aeronautical Development Agency, is a four-and-half generation single-engine multirole light fighter jet.  the Indian Air Force is likely to purchase 83 LCA Tejas for about ₹45,000 crore.

            • 'Moti Bagh', a documentary film based on the struggle of a farmer named Vidyadutt living in Uttarakhand's Pauri Garhwal region, has been selected as an entry to Oscars 2019.

            • Breast cancer survivor Sarah Thomas (37) has become the 1st person to swim English Channel 4 times non-stop.

            • All-rounder Dinesh Mongia has announced retirement from all forms of cricket, 12 years after playing his last international match.

              • The 16th round of Foreign Office Consultations between India and Iran was held in Tehran (Iran's capital) today.
                • Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale led the Indian delegation.

                • During the consultations, the two sides reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral cooperation, ongoing connectivity and infrastructure development projects, including the development of Shahid Behesthi Port, Chabahar and full operationalization of the Chabahar Agreement between India, Iran and Afghanistan.
                • Note : The next round of Foreign Office Consultations will be held in New Delhi on mutually convenient dates.
              • The 38th edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) will be organized from 30th of October to 9th of November this year, where authors, publishers, intellectuals and artists worldwide will bring their experiences and expertise to this prominent event and partake in a vibrant cultural programme.
                • UNESCO has named Sharjah as the World Book Capital City for the year 2019 in recognition of the city’s continuous efforts in promoting books and literacy.
                • Aligning itself with the title of the World Book Capital, the SIBF will be organized under the theme 'Open Books, Open Minds'.
              • The maiden Trilateral Naval exercise involving Indian Navy (IN), Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and Royal Thailand Navy (RTN) commenced at Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. 
                • The 5-day exercise will be held from 16 to 20 September 2019.
                • The main aim of this exercise is to bolster maritime inter-relationships amongst India, Thailand and Singapore as well as to contribute significantly towards enhancing the overall maritime security in the region.

              • Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur has launched Mukhya Mantri Seva Sankalp Helpline (Chief Minister’s Service Resolution Helpline) number ‘1100’ for speedy and time-bound redressal of public grievances using modern technology. 
                • By calling this helpline common citizens of state will be able to resolve their complaints and problems.
                • Note : With the launch of Mukhya Mantri Seva Sankalp Helpline Himachal Pradesh has now become 4th state in country to provide this facility. So far this facility is available in Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
              • The Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorized Occupants) Amendment Bill, 2019 which was passed by the Parliament during the last Budget Session has come into effect.
                • This bill will facilitate smooth and speedy eviction of unauthorized occupants from Government residential accommodations and ensure retrieval of these residential accommodations from unauthorized occupants.
                • This is expected to further increase availability of government residential accommodations for eligible persons and reduce the waiting period.
                • As per the Amendment Act, the Estate officer will issue short Show cause notice of three days before eviction of the unauthorized occupant from Government accommodation.

              • In a consumer friendly initiative, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has expanded the scope and coverage of Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) to include all categories of billers who raise recurring bills and payments (except prepaid recharges) as eligible participants, on a voluntary basis.
              • India's first private train Delhi-Lucknow Tejas Express will be flagged-off from Lucknow by Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath on October 4. 
                • Note : It will be the first train of Indian Railways that will be entirely run by Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).

              • The Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) handed over a New-Generation Wargaming Software developed by New Delhi-based Institute for Systems Studies and Analysis (ISSA) to the Indian Navy.
                • This software is aimed at creating an environment that would enable Maritime Warfare Centres (MWCs) to train using latest technological and computing tools.

              • Indian Actress Neena Gupta won Best Actress Award at the India International Film Festival of Boston for the film 'The Last Color'. 
                • The film which is directed by chef Vikas Khanna also won the award in the Best Feature Film category. 
              • Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's will honour Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Swachh Bharat Mission, a sanitation initiative that improved access to toilets.
                • Mr Modi will receive its annual Goalkeepers Global Goals Award for providing 500 million people in India safer sanitation. 
                • Mr Modi will be in the United States next week to receive the foundation's award.
              • Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was conferred the Dr Kalam Smriti International Excellence Award 2019 in Dhaka today. 
                • The award has been instituted in the memory of former Indian President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
              New Appointments
              • Political journalist Ajay Kumar Singh has been appointed as the Press Secretary to President Ram Nath Kovind
                • Ajay is going to replace Ashok Malik whose term ended in July 2019. 
              • The Indian Air Force (IAF) appointed Wing Commander Anjali Singh as India's first woman defence attaché at an Indian mission abroad.

                International Current Affairs
                • The United Nation's International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer (International Ozone Day) is being observed today.
                  • The ozone layer, a fragile shield of gas, protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the rays of the sun, thus helping preserve life on the planet. 
                  • 2019 Ozone Day theme : 32 years and healing
                • Today (16th September) is International Red Panda Day (IRPD)
                  • Red panda is a mammal slightly larger than a domestic cat and feeds on the bamboo.
                  • The commemoration of the International Red Panda Day is a way to promote and encourage people save these adorable beings as they are being listed under endangered species.
                • President Ram Nath Kovind reached Slovenia's capital Ljubljana today after concluding his visit to Iceland and Switzerland. 
                  • During this visit, he will hold talks with his Slovenian counterpart Borut Pahor
                  • President will also be present during the delegation level talks and signing of agreements between the two countries. 
                  • During his two-days visit, the President will also take part in the India-Slovenia business event and grace a reception to be hosted by the Indian community.
                  • Important Note : This is the 1st ever visit by any Indian President to Slovenia after it gained Independence in 1991. 
                • Chief of Indian Coast Guard General Krishnaswamy Natarajan is on a 4 day visit to Dhaka.
                  • During the visit, DG Coast Guard will be calling on the Home Minister, Chief of Naval Staff, Director General of Bangladesh Coast Guard among others.
                  • The visit will strengthen defence cooperation particularly in the field of maritime domain. 
                  • It will also strengthen the close and fraternal ties existing between the Coast Guards of the two countries.
                • US President Donald Trump will join PM Narendra Modi to address 50,000 Indian-Americans at the 'Howdy, Modi' event in Houston on September 22. 
                  • The two leaders addressing the event is historic and unprecedented," Indian envoy to the US Harsh Shringla said.
                National Current Affairs
                • In Tripura, the 3 day long traditional Neermahal Jal Utsav concluded today with eye catching boat race and swimming competitions at Rudrasagar lake.
                  • Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb flagged off the boat race. 
                  • Note : Neermahal is a water palace built at the middle of Rudrasagar lake by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya in 1930 as his summer resort being inspired by Mughal style of architecture.
                • Children's week will be observed in In Uttar Pradesh at all angan wadi centres across the state from today under the nutrition month campaign. 
                  • Poshan Abhiyaan is a mission with the vision to address malnutrition in children, adolescent girls and pregnant ladies. 
                • The renovated Jayakar Bungalow, a classic heritage site situated inside the premises of National Film Archives of India (NFAI) in Pune, Maharashtra was inaugurated by Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting.
                • India's autonomous public service broadcaster Doordarshan is celebrating its 60 years.
                  • The public broadcaster started its journey in the year 1959 from Delhi. 
                  • Over the years, Doordarshan has grown into a network operating 34 satellite channels, besides providing free-to-air DTH service having 104 in its bookings. 
                  • Doordarshan has served people as a major source of information, education and entertainment since years.

                • Telangana State Assembly today unanimously passed a resolution against proposed Uranium mining in Nallamala forest area
                  • The state Government has proposed the resolution following an assurance by Chief Minister Chandrasekhar Rao yesterday to the Congress members.
                  • The Assembly urged the Central Government to withdraw proposal of Uranium mining in Nallamala Forest Area in view of the possible threat to the habitation and biodiversity in and around Nallamala due to mining besides public fears of air and water pollution due to Uranium mining.
                Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
                • The amalgamated entity of United Bank of India, Punjab National Bank and Oriental Bank of Commerce will come into effect from 1st April 2020.
                  • Important Note : The merged entity will be the second-largest public sector bank in the country after the State Bank of India (SBI).
                Awards & Honors
                • American space agency NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has won the Outstanding Interactive Program award at the 71st Creative Arts Emmys for its multimedia coverage of SpaceX's Demonstration Mission 1 last March.  
                Science & Technology
                • NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is expected to reveal new information once it flies over landing site of Chandrayaan-2's Vikram lander tomorrow. 
                  • The LRO is also likely to release images that it takes of the lander.
                Deaths
                • Film editor Sanjib Kumar Datta (54) passed away.
                  • Datta has edited more than 80 films and is known for his work in 'Iqbal', among others.
                • Former Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kodela Siva Prasada Rao today committed suicide at his residence in Hyderabad. 
                  • He was accused of "stealing" furniture worth nearly ₹1 crore from the Assembly and diverting it to his personal offices and residence in Guntur.
                New Appointments
                • Justice P Lakshmana Reddy, a retired judge of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh High Court was sworn-in as the 1st Lokayukta of Andhra Pradesh
                  • His oath to office was administered by the state Governor Biswabhusan Hairchandan at a function held in Vijayawada. 
                Sports Current Affairs
                • Indian billiards and snooker player Pankaj Advani has increased his tally of world titles to 22 by winning a 4th straight final in the 150-up format at the IBSF World Billiards Championship in Mandalay in Myanmar. 
                • Indian shuttler Kaushal Dharmamer clinched the Myanmar International Series by defeating Indonesia's Karono Karono in Men's singles final in Yangon.
                • Spain defeated Argentina  to win the Basketball World Cup in Beijing.
                  • This is their 1st title in 13 years.
