International Current Affairs
  • The ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit was recently held at New Delhi. 
    • This summit marks the 25 years of India's ties with the southeast Asian bloc.  
    • Leaders of the ten ASEAN countries, comprising Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar (Burma), Cambodia, Laos and Brunei have attended the summit. 
    • The ASEAN Nations have issued a joint statement titled Delhi Declaration focusing on counter-terrorism, identity security, military cooperation, and bilateral financial support.
    • ASEAN - Association of South East Asian Nations.
    • Theme of this summit : “Shared Values, Common Destiny”.
  • 6 Southeast Asian nations (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Brunei) today formed an initiative titled 'Our Eyes'. 
    • Aim of 'Our Eyes'  : To counter terrorism and extremism in the region. 
    • Under this initiative, nations will share information on militant groups and develop a common database of extremists.
National Current Affairs
  • India celebrated its 69th Republic Day today with a record 10 heads of state from ASEAN Nations, watching the grand parade with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Rajpath, Delhi.
  • The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) today said that engineering students will study vedas, puranas, and yoga under the revised curriculum from the next academic session. 
    • The modified course will also focus on Indian philosophical, linguistic and artistic traditions.
  • The Maharashtra government has launched `Balasaheb Thackeray Shaheed Sanmaan' scheme, under which family members of martyrs would be provided jobs with the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). 
  • Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu inaugurated the World War II Memorial Museum in the state's Changlang district bordering Myanmar.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Jack Ma-led Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba today became a $500 billion company
    • Important Note : Alibaba is only the second Asian technology firm to reach the milestone after WeChat operator Tencent Holdings, which crossed the $500-billion mark on November 20 last year. 
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has inked MoU with IL&FS Transportation Networks Ltd for construction of the 14.150 km long, 2-lane bi-directional Zojila Tunnel in Jammu & Kashmir.
    • This would be India’s longest road tunnel and longest bi-directional tunnel in Asia
    • On completion, the tunnel will provide all weather connectivity between Srinagar, Kargil and Leh.
  • India and Vietnam today signed two Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) to enhance cooperation in field of information and broadcasting and space cooperation. 
Awards & Honors
  • The Government of India has announced 3 Padma Vibhushan, 9 Padma Bhushan and 73 Padma Shri Awards for 85 personalities. 
    • This includes a Padma Shri award to an individual from each of the 10 ASEAN countries. 
    • Musicians Ilaiyaraja, Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, and Hindutva ideologue P Parameswaran were awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian award.

  • Martyred IAF Garuda Commando Jyoti Prakash Nirala was honoured with the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award, posthumously for his role in a counter-terrorist operation in Jammu and Kashmir. 
    • With this, he became the first-ever airman to receive the honour for a ground combat operation.
New Appointments
  • Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) today appointed Dilip Chenoy as its Director General
  • The US Senate has approved President Donald Trump’s selection of Jerome Powell to be the next Chairman of the Federal Reserve beginning next month.
    • Powell will replace Janet Yellen, the first woman to lead the Fed, when her term ends Feb. 3. 
Science & Technology
  • Indigenously developed surveillance aircraft 'Netra', also known as 'eye in the sky', flew over Rajpath for the first time as part of the Republic Day parade. 
    • Netra is an Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft with a 200-km range, and was inducted by the IAF last year.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Former India captain MS Dhoni has been awarded India's third highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan, making him the 11th cricketer to receive the award. 
  • English football club Arsenal has become the first major global sporting team to sign a sponsorship deal promoting a cryptocurrency
    • The club will promote a new cryptocurrency sold by gambling platform CashBet. 
  • Indian Badminton Player Siddharth Pratap Singh won Swedish Open Junior International Series by defeating Denmark’s Mads Christophersen.
