National Current Affairs
  • Today is 8th National Voters Day.
    • The date (25th January) was declared as the National Voters' Day in the year 2011 as the Election Commission of India was founded on this day in the year 1950.
    • The day aims at increasing the enrolment of voters, especially encourage participation of newly eligible young voters and ensure universal adult franchise.
    • Theme of National Voters Day 2018 :  "Assessable Elections"
  • Maharashtra state government has banned the sale of tobacco at shops selling fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG)
    • What are Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) ?
    • The products that sell quickly at relatively low cost are called Fast-Moving Consumer Goods. 
    • Examples : Milk, Chocolates, Fruits and vegetables, Soda, Over-the-counter drugs like aspirin, packaged foods and beverages etc.
  • To promote young scientists and researchers in the country, the Ministry of Science & Technology has announced 4 new schemes
    • They are :
      • Teacher Associateship for Research Excellence (TARE) Scheme : To tap latent potential of faculty working in state universities, colleges and private academic institutions who are well trained but having difficulty in pursuing their research due to varied reasons including lack of facilities, funding and guidance.
      • Overseas Visiting Doctoral Fellowship : To enhance international mobility of Indian research students having potential to create talented pool of globally trained manpower.
      • Distinguished Investigator Award (DIA) : To recognize and reward Principal Investigators (PIs) of Department of Science and Technology (DST) projects that have performed remarkably well.
      • AWSAR (Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research) : To encourage, empower and endow popular science writing through newspapers, magazines, blogs, social media, etc. by young PhD Scholars and Post-Doctoral Fellows during course of their studies and research pursuits.
  • The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has awarded 325 air routes under the second phase of government’s flagship regional connectivity scheme UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik). 
    • Around 40% or 129 of 325 air routes were awarded to newly created category of ‘priority areas’ that include Jammu and Kashmir, Northeastern and hill states, Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Centre today announced it would infuse ₹88,139 crore as capital into 20 state-owned banks during the current fiscal. 
    • IDBI Bank will get the most at ₹10,610 crore, followed by Bank of India and SBI which will receive ₹9,232 crore and ₹8,800 crore respectively. 
    • This is the first batch of the ₹2.11 lakh crore recapitalisation plan announced last year.

  • Google's parent company Alphabet has launched a cybersecurity business named 'Chronicle' which aims to help companies find and stop cyber attacks before they cause harm. 
  • American multinational technology company Apple topped the Fortune magazine’s World’s Most Admired Companies List 2018 for 11th Consecutive year.
    • Top 3 in the List :

      • Amazon
      • Alphabet (Parent company of Google)
Science & Technology
  • SARAS PT1N, the new upgraded version of SARAS, the indigenous transport aircraft developed by National Aeronautics Laboratory, successfully made its maiden flight in Bengaluru today.
  • Two Macaque Monkeys have become the first primates to be cloned using the same approach that produced Dolly the sheep, the first mammal cloned from an adult somatic cell. 
    • The monkeys were named Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua after their birthplace China (Zhonghua in Mandarin). 
  • Sheikh Salim Gafur, the driver of the bus carrying pilgrims during the Amarnath Yatra attack in July 2017 has been conferred the Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak for showing courage in saving life under dangerous circumstances. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured 7 girls and 11 boys with the National Bravery Awards.
  • Bollywood Actress Deepika Padukone was named the Most Stylish Female at the HT India's Most Stylish Awards 2018
    • Shahid Kapoor got the Most Stylish Male Award. 
    • Sonam Kapoor won the Global Style Icon Award.
    •  Aishwarya Rai won the Timeless Style Diva Award.
Deaths
  • Simon Barnes (52), the actor who played Tinky Winky in the children's TV series Teletubbies passed away. 
New Appointments
  • Senior scientist Dr V Narayanan has assumed charge as Director of ISRO’s Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC)
    • He has replaced S Somanath, who was appointed as Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC).
Sports Current Affairs
  • Windies' all-rounder Kieron Pollard has become the first cricketer to play 400 T20 matches, achieving the feat while playing for Melbourne Renegades against Adelaide Strikers in the BBL.
