International Affairs
  • Today (27th January) is International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.
    • This day commemorates the genocide that resulted in the death of an estimated 6 million Jewish people, 2 million Romani people, 250,000 mentally and physically disabled people, and 9,000 homosexual men by the Nazi regime and its colalborators.
    • Theme of the year 2018 : “Holocaust Remembrance and Education: Our Shared Responsibility
  • India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have agreed to set up a mechanism aimed at enhancing maritime cooperation
  • India is going to host informal Ministerial meeting of World Trade Organisation (WTO) in March 2018 in New Delhi.
    • Aim of this Meeting : To muster support for issues and also help to multi-lateral process.
  • In a bid to safeguard world from hackers and growing data breaches, the World Economic Forum (WEF) has launched new Global Centre for Cybersecurity headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
    • This autonomous organization will become operational from March 2018
    • Aim of Global Centre for Cybersecurity : Tto establish first global platform for governments, businesses, experts and law enforcement agencies to collaborate on cybersecurity challenges.
MOUs & Agreements
  • Alpha Design Technologies Ltd. has signed Rs. 45-crore deal with Ministry of Defence to supply indigenous simulators for gunnery and missile firing from BMP II vehicles to Indian Army.
    • Under this deal, as many as 57 simulators will be manufactured at company’s Bengaluru facility and will be supplied to Indian Army over two years period.
National Current Affairs
  • On the occasion of the 69th Republic Day, the Indian Railways renamed Fairy Queen, the world's oldest working steam engine, as '69 Ganrajya Express'. 
    • The engine, constructed in the UK and inducted to the then East Indian Railway in 1855, was christened as 'Fairy Queen' in 1895.
  • For the welfare of the downtrodden citizen across the state, the Punjab Government has launched a new scheme titled Mahatma Gandhi Sarbat Vikas Yojna (MGSVY).
    • This scheme is aimed at the inclusive growth of the distressed sections of the society. 
    • Objective of MGSVY : To identify poor and distressed households which have been deprived of the benefits of the various welfare schemes launched by state government.
  • The Indian Railways has changed the category name 'viklang' (handicapped) to 'Divyang' (divine bodies) in its concession forms offered to people with special needs. 
    • From February 1, the new forms will have the word 'Blind' replaced with 'Persons with visual impairment with total absence of Sight', while 'Deaf and Dumb' will be changed to 'Persons with Hearing and Speech Impairment'.
  • Kolkata today became first metro city in India to get floating market
    • The floating market is located on lake at Patuli in South Kolkata which is 400 metres long and 60 metres wide.
Science & Technology
  • To solve the various complications faced by the power distribution sector, the India-Japan Smart Grid Pilot Project was inaugurated Panipat, Haryan. 
    • It was inaugurated by State Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in the presence of Japanese Minister Keniko Sen.
New Appointments
  • The Ambassador of India to Cuba Tsewang Namgyal, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Poland.
  • Srikumar Menon, presently Ambassador of India to South Sudan has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Angola.
  • Presently Counsellor, High Commission of India, Port Moresby Rajesh Agarwal has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Niger.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Bhopal-based Prodigee Finance Limited received Non-Banking Financial Company NBFC license from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
    • This NBFC license from RBI makes it possible for the firm to provide Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SME) loans as part of their services.

Sports Current Affairs
  • World number two tennis player Caroline Wozniacki won her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open by beating the world number one Simona Halep.
  • Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal reached the final of the Indonesia Masters Super 500 tournament by beating Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon.
    • Saina will now face face either of Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei or China's He Bingjiao in her sixth final in Jakarta.
  • Delhi beat Rajasthan by 41 runs at the Eden Gardens to clinch their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
  • An option titled the Right to Match card, has been introduced for the first time in the ongoing IPL auctions. 
    • Right to Match card is an option for a team to retain a player, by matching the highest bid amount for the player by another team during the auction.
