Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Up, up and away: on Sensex's new high"
  • Stock market - a place where people buy and sell shares in companies
  • Roaring - powerful
  • Rally - an increase in the value of something after a period when its value has been low
  • Benchmark - an amount, level, standard etc that you can use for judging how good or bad other things are
  • Indices - a plural of index
  • Scaling - increasing
  • Respectively - used for saying that something happens separately to each of the people or things mentioned in the order in which they were mentioned
  • Investor - a person who puts money into something in order to make a profit or get an advantage
  • Witnes - to see something happen
  • Correction - a fall in values on the stock market following a period when values have risen very fast
  • Emerging - just beginning to exist or be noticed
  • Swift - happening quickly or immediately
  • Blue-chip - a company or investment that makes a lot of money and is safe to invest in
  • Lag behind - to move slowly
  • Divergence - a difference in the way that two or more things develop from the same thing
  • Significantly - by a large amount, or in a way that is easily noticeable
  • Capitalisation - the total value of all the shares in one or more companies on a market
  • Bagger - an investment that is the stated number of times more valuable than it was when it was made
  • Betting - the activity of trying to win money by placing a bet (=guessing the result of a race, game etc)
  • Reminiscent - similar to something else
  • Bear market - a situation in the stock market in which the prices of shares are falling
  • Probably - used for saying that you think something is likely
  • Severely - very seriously
  • Presage - to be a sign that something is going to happen, especially something bad
  • Eventual - happening or existing at the end of a process or period of time

  • Outbreak - the sudden start of war, disease, violence etc
  • Thaw - to become friendlier
  • Resolution - the action of solving a problem or dealing with a disagreement in a satisfactory way
  • Conflict - angry disagreement between people or groups
  • Stability - a situation in which things happen as they should and there are no harmful changes
  • Broker - to arrange the details of a deal, plan etc so that everyone can agree to it
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Loom - if something unpleasant or difficult looms, it seems likely to happen soon
  • Intended - to have a plan in your mind to do something
  • Trigger - to make something happen
  • Pact - an agreement between two or more people or organizations in which they promise to do something
  • Deadlocked - if a situation is deadlocked, or if people are deadlocked, there is a serious disagreement and neither person or group involved in it is willing to change their opinions or position
  • Claim - if war, disease, or an accident claims someone’s life, they die as a result of it
  • Dispute - a serious disagreement, especially one between groups of people that lasts for a long time
  • Concerning - about a particular subject
  • Delimitation - the marking or describing of the limits of something
  • Cede - to allow someone to take something such as power or land away from you
  • Troops - soldiers, especially in large numbers
  • Prolong - to make something last longer
  • Confrontation - a situation in which people or groups are arguing angrily or are fighting
  • Mobilise - if you mobilize a group of people, or if they mobilize, they come together in order to achieve something
  • Autocratic - ruling with complete power
  • Dictator - someone who uses force to take and keep power in a country
  • Pretext - a reason that you pretend to have in order to hide your real reason or intention
  • Conscription - the process of making people join the armed forces
  • Enslave - to make someone a slave
  • Slave - someone who belongs by law to another person as their property and has to obey them and work for them
  • Exodus - a situation in which a lot of people leave a place or activity at the same time
  • Desperate - very worried and angry because you do not know how to deal with an unpleasant situation
  • Migrant - someone who travels to another place or country in order to find work
  • Drown - to sink under water
  • Accord - a formal agreement between countries or groups
  • Rapprochement - the development of greater understanding and friendship between two countries or groups after they have been unfriendly
  • String of - a group of similar or connected things
  • Democratic -  based on the principle that all people are equal and should be able to share in making decisions
  • Reform - a change that is intended to correct a situation that is wrong or unfair, or make a system work more effectively
  • Unveil - to announce something officially that was previously a secret
  • State of emergency - a situation in which a government takes action to deal with an event such as a flood or a fire that is putting a lot of people in danger
  • Rumbling - talk or signs of people being unhappy with a situation
  • Ethnic - relating to a group of people who have the same culture and traditions
  • Majority - most of the people or things in a group
  • Dominant  more important, powerful, or successful than the other people or things of the same type
  • Minority - a small number of people or things that are part of a larger group but different in some way from most of the group
  • Unrest - angry or violent behaviour by people who are protesting against something
  • Tactfully - very carefully
  • Coalition - a temporary union of different political parties that agree to form a government together
  • Impede - to make it more difficult for someone to do something or more difficult for something to happen
  • Prolonged - continuing for a long time
  • Milestone - an event or achievement that marks an important stage in a process
  • Guerrilla war - using unexpected methods of attack to surprise the enemy
  • Hostility - opposition to something
  • Diminishing - to reduce or be reduced in size or importance
  • Apparatus - the people and organizations involved in some aspect of government
  • Former - used for describing someone or something that had a particular job, title, status etc in the past, but not now
  • Transparency - the quality of being done in an open way without secrets
  • Accountability - a situation in which people know who is responsible for something and can ask them to explain its state or quality
  • Prerequisite - something that must exist or happen before something else is possible
  • Counter-terrorism - the actions and methods of a country that are intended to stop the activities of people who use violence to achieve political aims
  • Landlocked - a landlocked country or area is surrounded by land
  • Conflict - angry disagreement between people or groups
  • Redemption - the state of being made free from the power of evil
  • Wisdom - the ability to make good decisions based on knowledge and experience
