        • The United States has granted Strategic Trade Authorization-1 (STA-1) status to India.
          • This status allow India's easier access to sensitive and high-technology products. 
          • This  move also will reduce the number of licenses required for US exports to India and allow easier sale of defence technologies. 
          • Important Point to Note : India is the only south Asian nation among the 36 countries that have been granted STA-1 status.
        • Cambodia’s ruling party CPP ( Cambodian People's Party) has won an expected victory in an election Sunday widely considered illegitimate after the only credible opposition was silenced.
          • This election ensures that long-ruling Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has been in power since 1985, will serve another five-year term.

        • The Earth Overshoot Day, the calculated illustrative calendar date on which humanity’s resource consumption for the year exceeds Earth’s capacity to regenerate those resources that year, will fall on August 1st for the year 2018.

        • China has invited Bhutan to join the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), following the visit of China's Vice Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou to the country. 
          • This was the first high-level visit by a Chinese politician to Bhutan since the Doklam standoff between India and China last year. 
          • Note : The Doklam region is claimed by both China and Bhutan.

        • The Parliament today passed Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill, 2018.
          • This is an anti-corruption Bill that provides punishment to bribe givers and takers, and extends prior nod for prosecution to former public officials with the Lok Sabha giving its assent to the law.
          • The Bill provides for imprisonment from three to seven years, besides fine, to those convicted of taking bribes. 
          • Bribe givers have also been included in the legislation for the first time and they can be punished with imprisonment up to seven years, fine, or both.
        • The month of September to be celebrated as National Nutrition Month every year
          • The decision in this regard was taken in the 2nd meeting of National Council on India’s Nutrition Challenges under POSHAN Abhiyaan, which was held today at New Delhi.

          • In the first leg of his visit, Modi will reach Rwanda on the 23rd for a two day visit.
          • India will extend two lines of credit of USD 100ml each for agricultural sector and industrial sector. 
          • India will also give 200 cows to Rwanda during the visit as part of an initiative to foster brotherhood and prosperity.
          • The Prime Minister will depart from Rwanda to Uganda on the 24th where he will call on the President. 
          • He will have delegation level talks and will address Indian community and the parliament of Uganda. 
          • Two lines of credit worth USD 164ml will be extended to Uganda during the visit.
          • In the last leg of his visit, Modi will reach South Africa on the 25th to attend the 10th BRICS summit at Johannesburg. 
          • He will meet South African President.
          • Inclusive growth, global governance, health and vaccines, peace keeping, and sustainable development will be core agenda during the BRICS summit.

        • India and the United States are going to hold the inaugural 2+2 dialogue led by India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and their US counterparts in New Delhi on September 6. 
          • Note : The US earlier postponed the dialogue, which was supposed to take place in July, as their Secretary of State Michael Pompeo was due to travel to North Korea.
        • The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) today declared that Migrants do not have the unfettered right to choose their host nation.
        • US President Donald Trump has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to Washington this autumn to discuss several issues, including Ukraine and the Middle East.
          • Trump and Putin met earlier this week in Helsinki, Finland for their first bilateral talks. 
          • Trump had said that he looked forward to his second meeting with Putin to work on several issues, including Ukraine and the Middle East.

        • For the first time, the Indian Air Force is going to participate in Exercise Pitch Black, a three-week multinational warfare exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force
          • The exercise will involve over 100 aircrafts from around the globe. 
          • The IAF contingent will consist of 145 air-warriors including a Garud commando team and four Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter planes.
        • Union home minister Rajnath Singh was on a 3-day visit to Bangladesh.
          • During this visit he met his Bangladeshi counterpart Asaduzzaman Khan and held discussions on various issues including anti-terror co-operation, attempts by terror groups to radicalise youths and Rohingya refugees.
          • He also signed Revised Travel Agreement (RTA - 2018) with Bangladesh to ease visa restrictions for citizens from the neighbouring country.
          • Under this agreement, freedom fighters and elderly Bangladeshi nationals will get five-year multiple visa from India.

        • Today (18th July) is 'Nelson Mandela International Day'.
          • He was born on this day in the year 1918.
          • In November 2009, the UN General Assembly declared 18 July "Nelson Mandela International Day" in recognition of the former South African President’s contribution to the culture of peace and freedom.
          • Important Points to Note :
            • Mandela was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna in 1990 for his role in the anti-apartheid movement. 
            • Apart from Pakistan national Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, he is the only non-Indian to have received the award. 
            • He was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in the year 1993.
        • The International Criminal Court has brought into effect a New Law under which politicians and military leaders can be held individually responsible for invasions and other major attacks. 
          • This law will apply to the leaders of the member states of ICC which have ratified it.

        • India has become the Vice-Chair (Regional head) of the Asia Pacific Region of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) for two years from July 2018 to June 2020.
          • The WCO has divided its Membership into six regions, each of the which is represented by a regionally elected Vice-Chairperson to the WCO Council.
          • By becoming the Vice Chair, India will be able to take up the leadership role at the WCO. 
        • The member states of the United Nations have finalized text of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, marking the first time they came together to negotiate an agreement covering all dimensions of international migration.
          • The compact is the first intergovernmental agreement to cover wide-ranging dimensions of international migration in holistic and comprehensive manner, agreed upon by all the UN member states (excluding the United States).

        • The Odisha government has constituted a ‘Heritage Cabinet’ to preserve the Odia language and the state’s culture.

        • Home Minister Rajnath Singh along with his Bangladeshi counterpart Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal today inaugurated India's largest visa centre in the world in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka.
          • It will replace India's four other visa application centres in Bangladesh in two phases.
        • The 1st-ever land-based communication link between China and Pakistan was inaugurated today. 
          • The Pakistan-China Optical Fibre Cable project includes an 820-kilometre underground cable that starts from Pakistan's Rawalpindi and ends at Khunjerab bordering China and connects with optical fibre in the Chinese side.
