International Affairs
  • The United States, Iran and Five other world powers (UK, France, Germany, Russia and China) have announced an understanding outlining limits on Iran’s nuclear programme so it cannot lead to atomic weapons, directing negotiators toward achieving a comprehensive agreement within three months.
    • This agreement will lift sanctions on Iran but place strict limits on its nuclear programme for more than a decade.
National Affairs
  • Ministry of Women and Child Development in collaboration with Facebook has launched the 100 Women Initiative which aims to recognize and acknowledge women who are making a difference in their communities across the country.
    • The initiative involves a contest to select 100 women achievers of India through public nominations via social media.

  • Uttar Pradesh government has suspended senior IPS officer Amitabh Thakur on various charges including violating official disciplinary norms.
  • Former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda, ex-Coal Secretary H C Gupta and seven other accused will be put on trial for alleged offences of criminal conspiracy and corruption in a coal block allocation case.

Books and Authors
  • Go Set a Watchman, the eagerly awaited a second book by the famous American author ‎Harper Lee‬ has been published, almost 60 years after it was written. 
    • Note : Harper Lee became famous for her classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird,  for which she won the Pulitzer Prize. 

Science & Technology
  • China has set up the World's Largest Cancer Registry System that will cover over 300 million people in a bid to fight the deadly disease with evidence-based and more-targeted intervention programmes.
    • At least three million people develop cancer each year in China, and the registry is expected to expand to include 40 per cent of the nation's population of 1.36 billion by 2020.

MOUs
  • India and Georgia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation in the field of Election Management and Administration.
    • The MoU was signed by Chief Election Commissioner of India, Dr. Nasim Zaidi, and Ms. Tamar Zhvania, Chairperson, Central Election Commission, Georgia.

Deaths
  • Veteran music composer MS Viswanathan passes away.
    • He was popularly known as Mellisai Mannar (Tamil for "The King of Light Music").
    • He composed songs in the languages Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi for over 1200 films.
    • The Tamil Nadu government conferred the Thirai Isai Chakravarthy title (Tamil for "The Emperor of Cine Music") on him.
New Appointments
  • Lt Gen Man Mohan Singh Rai has been appointed as the next Vice-Chief of the Indian Army.
    • Rai, at present the Eastern Army Commander, will replace Lt Gen Philip Campose, who superannuates on July 31.
    • Lt General Praveen Bakshi, currently serving as Chief of Staff, Northern Command, will be elevated as Army commander and moved to Eastern Command.

Sports
  • Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals suspended from IPL for two years for betting and spot fixing scandals. 
    • Key officials of the teams - Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra were banned for life
    • The Lodha panel, which was appointed by the Supreme Court of India, has made this landmark judgement.
