      • The 9th India-Japan Strategic Dialogue took place at Tokyo today.
        • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj co-chaired the strategic dialogue with her Japanese counterpart Taro Kono and reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral ties.

      • The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to add 'Ramji' as Dr BR Ambedkar's middle name in all documents and records. 
        • The spelling of the leader's name in Hindi has also been changed so that it is pronounced as 'Aambedkar'. 
        • Important Note : Ramji was Ambedkar's father's name and it is customary in Maharashtra to add it as middle name.
      • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved an Integrated scheme on school education by including the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan, and Teacher Education from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2020. 
        • The scheme aims to support the states in universalising access to school education from pre-nursery to Class 12 across the country,” a government statement said.

      • France's President Emmanuel Macron has announced that the country is going to make school education compulsory from the age of three instead of six.
        • This move is a part of the government's reform to make education accessible to everyone irrespective of their financial status.
      • The 11th meeting of the China-India joint-group on Economic Relations, Trade, Science & Technology was held in New Delhi. 
        • The session was co-chaired by Union Minister of Commerce & Industry Suresh Prabhu and China’s Minister of Commerce Mr. Zhong Shan.

      • To create public awareness in judicial matters, the central government is going to install 'Justice Clocks' at all 24 high courts soon. 
        • The clocks will have LED display boards showing the daily rate of disposal of cases, pending cases and performance-based ranking of the courts.
      • The National Conference on Down Syndrome was recently held in New Delhi
        • This conference was organised by the National Trust under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

        • The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly today unanimously passed a resolution recommending the Centre to rename the Kolhapur airport as the 'Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj Airport'.
        • Srinagar's Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden was opened for visitors.
          • This is Asia's largest tulip garden.
          • This year, 12.5 lakh tulip bulbs of 48 varieties were sown in the garden by the floriculture department.
        • The 1st-ever International Print Biennale, an International Exhibition of Graphic Prints was held in New Delhi.

        • Today is World Meteorological Day.

        • The 44 African countries from total 55 members of African Union (AU) have signed agreement to create African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), one of the world’s largest free trade blocs
          • The agreement was signed at a summit held in Kigali, Rwanda.
          • The signed AfCFTA agreement contains legal framework for free trade area and will come into force after it is ratified by individual countries through their respective domestic processes. 
        • South Korean ex-president Lee Myung-bak was arrested and jailed today over a range of corruption allegations.
        • Bolivia's President Evo Morales unfurled 200 km long and 3 metre wide National flag.
          • This flag is claimed to be world’s biggest flag
          • This flag extended between cities La Paz and Oruro.

        • Today is 87th Shaheed Diwas (Martyr’s Day)
          • 87 years ago, on March 23 in 1931, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Hari Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar were hanged by the British for their alleged involvement in the killing of John Saunders. 
          • They sacrificed their lives for the independence of India but their inspiring actions continued to stir the desire for freedom until it was achieved in 1947.

        • PM Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Navi Mumbai international airport, which is expected to ease flight operations at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
          • The airport is being built at the cost of ₹16,700 crore, more than five times the estimated cost when it was first proposed in 1998.
        • A Ranchi court today pronounced RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav guilty in the 4th fodder scam case. 
          • Yadav has been convicted in three other fodder scam cases and is currently serving his jail sentences.

        • The US and Israeli military officials have launched a month-long joint military exercise titled "Juniper Cobra 2018". 
          • The biennial drill is jointly held by the Israeli military and the US European Command (USEUCOM).
        • Pakistan is not going attend the World Trade Organisation (WTO) meeting to be held in Delhi next week amid the ongoing diplomatic tension between the two nations.
          • Note : India has invited ministers of more than 50 nations including the US and China to attend the meet.
        • The 5th World Ocean Summit 2018 was recently held at Riviera Maya, Mexico.

        • India was ranked at 78th among 114 countries on World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Energy Transition Index  (ETI) released as part of report titled Fostering Effective Energy Transition. 
          • The index ranks countries on how well they are able to balance energy security and access with environmental sustainability and affordability.

        National Current Affairs
        • The 3-day annual Krishi Unnati Mela began in New Delhi today with a focus on doubling the farmers' income. 
          • The objective of the fair is to create awareness among farmers about the latest agriculture-related technological developments.
          • During the mela, latest agriculture and allied sector technologies will be displayed at more than 800 stalls.
        • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu-led Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has quit the BJP-led NDA over the Centre's refusal to grant special category status to the state. 
          • The party also moved a No-confidence motion against the Modi government in the Parliament today.
        • The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence has recommended making 5-year military training compulsory for aspirants of state and central government jobs
          • The recommendation came in light of the "alarming shortage of officers and PBOR (Personnel Below Officer Rank) in the armed forces". The panel also asked the Defence Ministry to give priority to the issue of shortage of officers.

        • The remaining cadres of militant organisation Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) today surrendered to the Meghalaya government.
        • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched a new program titled LaQshya.
          • Aim of LaQshya : Improving quality of maternity care in labour room and maternity Operation Theatre (OT). 
          • The Program will improve quality of care for pregnant women in labour room, maternity Operation Theatre and Obstetrics Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and High Dependency Units (HDUs).
        • The Lok Sabha has passed Payment of Gratuity (Amendment) Bill, 2017 to empower government to fix period of maternity leave and tax-free gratuity amount with an executive order. The Bill seeks to amend the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972.
        Science & Technology
        • The Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes (CIRB) has claimed that India’s first cloned Assamese buffalo male calf named Sach-Gaurav was born in Hisar, Haryana. 
          • It was born to Murrah buffalo, at Hi Tech Sach Dairy Farm, 100 kms from cloning laboratory, making it first buffalo calf to be born in field.
        • Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that the country would be launching an unmanned mission to Mars in 2019

        • Indian Actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha is honoured with a Lifetime achievement award for his contribution to the fields of arts and politics at a ceremony in UK’s Parliament complex, under annual Political and Public Life Awards by Britain’s Asian Voice weekly newspaper.
        Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
        • ICICI Securities, the brokerage and merchant banking arm of private sector lender ICICI Bank, will hit the IPO market on Thursday (March 22) next week. 
          • Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Citigroup, CLSA, Edelweiss, IIFL and SBI Capital Markets are managing the ICICI Securities IPO.
        New Appointments
        • Armen Sarkissian was elected the 4th President of Armenia by the country’s National Assembly today.
          • Note : For the first time in Armenia’s history, the president is elected by the National Assembly instead of popular vote.

        • Indian yogi and mystic Sadguru Jaggi Vasudev released a book titled ‘Fulfilling Bapu’s Dreams – Prime Minister Modi’s Tribute to Gandhiji’ at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
          • The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, received the first copy of the book.
          • Author of the Book : Dr Bindeshwar Pathak (Noted sanitation activist)

          • Today is World Consumer Rights Day.
            • In India this day is celebrated as Viswa Upabhokta Adhikar Diwas
            • On March 15, 1962 US President John F. Kennedy gave a speech on consumer rights which led to the creation of the Consumer Bill of Rights.
            • Consumer rights activist Anwar Fazal later proposed the observance of a "World Consumer Rights Day" marking that date, and from 15 March 1983 consumer organizations began observing that date as an occasion to promote basic rights of consumers.
            • Theme for World Consumer Rights Day 2018 : ‘Making digital marketplaces fairer’
          • According to the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network's 2018 World Happiness Report, Finland has been named the happiest country in the world

            • The world observed 'Pi Day' today to celebrate March 14 (3/14), which coincides with Mathematical constant Pi's value (3.14). 
              • Pi denotes the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle in Mathematics.
            • Today (2nd Wednesday in March) is No Smoking Day.
              • This is an annual health awareness day intended to help smokers who want to quit smoking.
            • Iran has supported Pakistan over the Kashmir issue by reiterating its support "for the people of Kashmir for their right to self-determination".
              • Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also invited Pakistan to participate in the Chabahar Port Project
              • Note : India developed the Chabahar Port to open a trade route to Afghanistan and central Asia by bypassing Pakistan.
            • The Saudi Information Ministry today announced that divorced mothers can now retain custody of their children
              • This comes as part of a series of social and economic reforms initiated by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2016.
              • Important Note : Saudi woman were earlier required to petition courts to win custody of children after divorce. 
            • As part of the 1st leg of his 2 nation visit (Mauritius and Madagascar) President Ram Nath Kovind visited Mauritius.
              • During this visit, Kovind inaugurated World Hindi Secretariat building in Port Louis, Mauritius. 
              • Important Note : Later he will visit Madagascar, making him 1st Indian President to visit largest African island country.
