International Current Affairs
- Today is World Meteorological Day.
- This day is celebrated every year on 23 March to commemorate the entry into force in 1950 of the convention that created the World Meteorological Organization.
- Theme of the World Meteorological Day 2018 : "Weather-Ready, Climate-Smart"
- Today (23rd March) is Pakistan Day.
- This day commemorates the historic Pakistan Resolution on March 23, 1940 - a day which marks the the birth of a separate state for Muslims.
- The 44 African countries from total 55 members of African Union (AU) have signed agreement to create African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), one of the world’s largest free trade blocs.
- The agreement was signed at a summit held in Kigali, Rwanda.
- The signed AfCFTA agreement contains legal framework for free trade area and will come into force after it is ratified by individual countries through their respective domestic processes.
- South Korean ex-president Lee Myung-bak was arrested and jailed today over a range of corruption allegations.
- Bolivia's President Evo Morales unfurled 200 km long and 3 metre wide National flag.
- This flag is claimed to be world’s biggest flag.
- This flag extended between cities La Paz and Oruro.
- Today is 87th Shaheed Diwas (Martyr’s Day)
- 87 years ago, on March 23 in 1931, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Hari Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar were hanged by the British for their alleged involvement in the killing of John Saunders.
- They sacrificed their lives for the independence of India but their inspiring actions continued to stir the desire for freedom until it was achieved in 1947.
- To boost the cultivation of millets like ragi and jowar on a mission mode to achieve nutritional security, the union government decided to declare 2018 as 'National Year of Millets'.
New Appointments
- Vodafone Group and Aditya Birla Group today appointed Balesh Sharma, the current COO of Vodafone India, as the CEO of the merged Idea Cellular and Vodafone India.
- Kumar Mangalam Birla will be the non-executive Chairman of the merged company.
- Akshaya Moondra, ldea Cellular's current CFO, will take over as the CFO of the new entity after the merger.
- Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran was elected President of the Court of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for three years.
- The court is the apex body of the autonomous and deemed university, comprising its senior academics, officials of the central and Karnataka governments, industry and civil society.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- Private sector lender DCB Bank has launched a remittance service to facilitate customers send money online globally.
- Under DCB Remit, any resident Indian can register online and transfer funds across 20 countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, the UAE and Germany.
- US President Donald Trump today imposed $60 billion (Rs 3.9 lakh crore) of tariffs on Chinese imports to punish the country for its “unfair” seizure of American intellectual property, a move that could escalate the already tense trade relations between the world’s two biggest economies.
- Private sector lender Yes Bank has launched a robotics based ‘Digital export Import’ payments solution as a part of its Yes Transact Smart Trade product suite.
- The integrated product uses robotics process automation and helps in eliminating the requirement of documents submission for import and export payments.
Awards & Honors
- The “Academy Award for Nobel Peace” from the USA has been conferred on Dr Ketzia David Prakasam, a philanthropist, social worker and spiritual worker here.
- Ketzia is the 1st Indian woman to receive this award.
- 26-year-old racer Anindith Reddy was crowned 'FMSCI National MotorSports Person of the Year 2017 at the FMSCI awards held in Chennai.
Books & Authors
- The 1st Indian Sign Language (ISL) Dictionary comprising of 3000 words has been launched by Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawarchand Gehlot in New Delhi today.
- The dictionary has been developed by Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre under Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.
- Aim of ISL Dictionary : To remove communication barriers between the hearing and unhearing communities as it is focused on providing more information in Indian sign language.
Sports Current Affairs
- 18-year-old Indian shooter Elavenil Valarivan set a qualification world record before claiming a Gold medal in the 10-metre air rifle women junior event at the ISSF Junior Shooting World Cup in Australia.
