- Today (16th March) is World Sleep Day.
- World Sleep Day is held the Friday before Spring Vernal Equinox of each year.
- This is an annual event, intended to be a celebration of sleep and a call to action on important issues related to sleep, including medicine, education, social aspects and driving.
- India was ranked at 78th among 114 countries on World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Energy Transition Index (ETI) released as part of report titled Fostering Effective Energy Transition.
- The index ranks countries on how well they are able to balance energy security and access with environmental sustainability and affordability.

National Current Affairs
- The 3-day annual Krishi Unnati Mela began in New Delhi today with a focus on doubling the farmers' income.
- The objective of the fair is to create awareness among farmers about the latest agriculture-related technological developments.
- During the mela, latest agriculture and allied sector technologies will be displayed at more than 800 stalls.
- Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu-led Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has quit the BJP-led NDA over the Centre's refusal to grant special category status to the state.
- The party also moved a No-confidence motion against the Modi government in the Parliament today.
- The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence has recommended making 5-year military training compulsory for aspirants of state and central government jobs.
- The recommendation came in light of the "alarming shortage of officers and PBOR (Personnel Below Officer Rank) in the armed forces". The panel also asked the Defence Ministry to give priority to the issue of shortage of officers.

- The remaining cadres of militant organisation Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) today surrendered to the Meghalaya government.
- The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched a new program titled LaQshya.
- Aim of LaQshya : Improving quality of maternity care in labour room and maternity Operation Theatre (OT).
- The Program will improve quality of care for pregnant women in labour room, maternity Operation Theatre and Obstetrics Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and High Dependency Units (HDUs).
- The Lok Sabha has passed Payment of Gratuity (Amendment) Bill, 2017 to empower government to fix period of maternity leave and tax-free gratuity amount with an executive order. The Bill seeks to amend the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972.
Science & Technology
- The Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes (CIRB) has claimed that India’s first cloned Assamese buffalo male calf named Sach-Gaurav was born in Hisar, Haryana.
- It was born to Murrah buffalo, at Hi Tech Sach Dairy Farm, 100 kms from cloning laboratory, making it first buffalo calf to be born in field.
- Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that the country would be launching an unmanned mission to Mars in 2019.

- Indian Actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha is honoured with a Lifetime achievement award for his contribution to the fields of arts and politics at a ceremony in UK’s Parliament complex, under annual Political and Public Life Awards by Britain’s Asian Voice weekly newspaper.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- ICICI Securities, the brokerage and merchant banking arm of private sector lender ICICI Bank, will hit the IPO market on Thursday (March 22) next week.
- Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Citigroup, CLSA, Edelweiss, IIFL and SBI Capital Markets are managing the ICICI Securities IPO.
New Appointments
- Armen Sarkissian was elected the 4th President of Armenia by the country’s National Assembly today.
- Note : For the first time in Armenia’s history, the president is elected by the National Assembly instead of popular vote.

- Indian yogi and mystic Sadguru Jaggi Vasudev released a book titled ‘Fulfilling Bapu’s Dreams – Prime Minister Modi’s Tribute to Gandhiji’ at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
- The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, received the first copy of the book.

- Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi was jailed for two years by a Patiala court in a 2003 human trafficking case.
Sports Current Affairs
- Indian para-athlete Deepa Malik won a Gold medal in the F-53/54 category javelin event at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai.
- With the win, Deepa has also qualified for the 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia, scheduled to be held in October.
- 17th IAAF World Indoor Championships were recently held in Birmingham (United Kingdom).
- 632 athletes from 144 nations participated in 26 Events.
- USA topped the medal tally with 18 medals (6 Gold, 10 Silver and 2 Bronze).
