National Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the National Career Counselling Portal as part of an endeavour to modernise all government-run employment exchanges.
    • The portal aims to bring on board around 20 million job seekers already registered with employment exchanges across India. 
    • It also aspires to bring 900,000 establishments and companies on the portal.
Science & Technology
  • India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, GSLV-Mark III project aimed at carrying four-tonne payloads, including future manned missions, has got a boost with ISRO successfully test-firing the first indigenous high-thrust cryogenic rocket engine for more than its full duration.
  • Panchgaon, in Maharashtra, becomes the first Indian village to get a free Wi-fi connection.
People in News
  • Yakub Memon, the lone death-row convict in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, is set to be hanged on July 30, with the Supreme Court Tuesday refusing to entertain his plea against the death penalty.  
  • Former Union Minister P.K. Thungon convicted by a Delhi Court in connection with a cheating and corruption case lodged by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) 17 years back, after which they were taken into custody.
New Appointments
  • An IAS officer of 1981 batch from Bihar cadre, Bhanu Pratap Sharma was appointed as Chairperson of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) with effect from 3 July 2015. 
    • Note : Sharma was given this additional charge of FSSAI for three months or till the appointment of a regular incumbent (Currently, he is the Secretary of Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare).
Business & Economy
  • BRICS Bank / New Development Bank (NDB) started its operations from Shanghai today.
    • Important Points to Note :
    • The agreement to establish the NDB was signed by the BRICS member states – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – during the group's sixth summit in Fortaleza, Brazil in July 2014. 
    • The main purpose of the new finance infrastructure is to promote sustainable development in BRICS states.
    • Each BRICS member is expected to put an equal share into establishing the startup capital of $50 billion with a goal of it reaching $100 billion. Besides the creation of the $100 billion BRICS Development Bank, the member states also established a reserve currency pool worth over another $100 billion. 
    • NDB's $100 billion pool, called the Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA), is designed to assist member countries at times of currency liquidity crises.
    • Brazil, India and Russia will each contribute $18 billion to the CRA. 
    • South Africa is set to contribute $5 billion. 
    • China will be responsible for the largest share of the CRA after contributing $41 billion to the bank.

  • French tennis legend Amelie Mauresmo inducted in International Tennis Hall of Fame.
  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) scrapped the 50-year-old Duleep Trophy due to packed schedule in the domestic season. 
    • In an attempt to experiment with the upcoming domestic season, the Indian cricket board also changed the limited overs tournaments like Deodhar Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.
    • About Duleep Trophy :
      • The Duleep Trophy is a first-class cricket competition played in India between the teams representing geographical zones of the country. 
      • The tournament was started by the BCCI in the 1961-62 season. 
      • The inaugural tournament was won by the West Zone who defeated the South Zone in the final by 10 wickets.
      • Five Indian zonal teams regularly take part in the Duleep Trophy - North Zone, South Zone, East Zone, West Zone and Central Zone. 
      • Duleep Trophy was once considered a tournament used for selection trials.
