International Affairs
  • The UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has announced that Conakry (capital of Guinea in west Africa) will be the World Book Capital for 2017.
National Affairs
  • Today (23rd July) is National Broadcasting Day‬.
    • On this day in 1927, India got its first radio station.
    • Note : The first station of the Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC) was inaugurated at Bombay by the British Viceroy of India Lord Irwin on 23rd July 1927.

  • Nation remembered freedom fighters Chandra Shekhar Azad and Lokmanya Tilak, on their birth anniversaries today.
  • Around 3 lakh toilets have been constructed in schools across the country under the ‪Swachh Vidyalaya‬ Initiative.
    • Andaman and Nicobar, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Kerala, Puducherry and Sikkim achieved the 100% target.
    • Gujarat and Karnataka are close to achieving the 100% target.

  • Nine months after becoming Haryana's Chief Minister, Manohar Lal Khattar today expanded his cabinet for the first time inducting three new ministers
    • With the induction of three ministers, the Khattar government will now have total 13 ministers including the Chief Minister.
    • Three newly inducted ministers are,
      • Krishan Lal Panwar (Cabinet rank), 
      • Ghanshyam Saraf (Minister of state with Independent charge) 
      • Nayab Saini (Minister of state)
  • The Gujarat High Court has issued notices to the Centre and the state government over a PIL demanding formation of a Censor Board-like body for approval of advertisements.
    • The High Court also sought a response from Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) and Press Council of India over misleading advertisements being published and broadcast in various print and electronic media.
    • Important Points to Note
      • At present, there is only one non-governmental body, Advertising Standard Council of India (ASCI), which monitors the issues of misleading advertisement but it cannot take punitive action against those who have been found cheating consumers.
      • According to Cigarettes and other Tobacco Product Act, 2003, one cannot advertise these products, but in the guise of club soda, music CDs or bravery awards, producers of tobacco, cigarette or alcohol press their advertisements through various media these days.
  • The Supreme Court today allowed state governments to exercise its powers of remission to release life convicts with a rider that this will not apply to cases probed by central agencies like CBI and for those incarcerated under central laws such as TADA.
    • Lifting its stay imposed over a year back, the apex court said relaxation would also not apply where the convict has been awarded life term in sexual offence cases of rape and murder.
New Appointments
  • Flipkart-owned mobile fashion store Myntra has appointed McKinsey director Ananth Narayanan as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
    • He will be taking over from the co-founder Mukesh Bansal who is currently serving as the head of Flipkart's commerce platform.
    • Note : Mukesh Bansal will assume the position of the chairman of the board while continuing to lead Flipkart's commerce platform.

  • In less than a month since the launch of the 'Smart City' Mission by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Puducherry has emerged as the first city to send its nomination to the Centre for the ambitious programme. 
  • Former Indian hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand will be conferred with the ‘Bharat Gaurav’ Lifetime Achievement Award by NRI organization Sanskriti Yuva Sangstha at the House of Commons inside the British Parliament on 25th July 2015.
Business & Economy
  • Suspecting tax evasion of at least 5,000 to 6,000 crore rupees, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has banned more than 900 organised syndicates who had set up shops to convert black money into legitimate-looking funds through the stock market platform.

  • Greece's parliament has passed legislation on a second batch of reforms needed to help unlock a huge international bailout for the country's stricken economy.
    • The bill, which includes civil justice reforms, a bank deposit protection scheme and measures to shore up the liquidity of the banks, was backed by more than 200 MPs -- a clear majority -- as voting continued in the 300-seat parliament.
  • With the total power generation from nuclear reactors at 5308 MWe, India is ranked 12th in the world in terms of Power generation from Nuclear Sources.
Deaths
  • EL Doctorow, critically acclaimed author of the novels Ragtime and Billy Bathgate passed away.
    • He was known for works which re-imagine the American experience, placing fictional characters in recognizable historical contexts.
