• The World Wildlife Fund for Nature has organized the 13th annual 'Earth Hour' on Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 pm local time. 
• The worldwide event encourages individuals to turn off non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol of their commitment to the planet.
• Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn has revoked royal decorations awarded to former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra over his corruption conviction.
  
• Shinawatra, who lives in self-exile in Dubai, was ousted in a military coup in 2006.

National Current Affairs

• The Election Commission and Indian Railways have collaborated to spread voter awareness messages through four long-distance trains : Kerala Express, Himsagar Express, Howrah Express and Guwahati Express. 
• The trains will bear slogans like 'My Vote Matters' and will also carry poll-related important contact details. 
• The trains will cover as many as 19 states.
• For the first time in Meghalaya, Braille-enabled ballot papers will be made available at all polling booths. 
• The ballot paper pasted on the EVMs will have the names and symbol of candidates in braille alphabets. 
• The move will facilitate more than 800 visually impaired electorates to vote by a secret ballot.

• President Ram Nath Kovind today inaugurated the plaque of the Mahatma Gandhi Hall at the Gabriel Rene Moreno University in Santa Cruz during his visit to Bolivia.
• President also participated in the India - Bolivia Business Forum today. 
• President is in Bolivia on the 2nd leg of his three nation tour.
  
• He is on a 3-nation visit to Croatia, Bolivia and Chile from March 25th to April 4th.
• The European Parliament has voted for an EU-wide ban on single-use plastic products such as the straws, cutlery and cotton buds that are clogging the world’s oceans. 
• The law on single-use plastic ban sets a target to gather 90 per cent of plastic for recycling by 2029 and mandates the production of plastic bottles with 25 per cent recycled material by 2025 and 30 per cent by 2030.
• The law also insists on polluters pay principle by insisting polluters to pay the costs of a clean-up.

International Current Affairs

• President Ram Nath Kovind reached Bolivia today on the 2nd leg of his 3 nations tour. 
• President of Bolivia Evo Morales welcomed Mr. Kovind at Viru Viru International Airport, Santa Cruz.
• During his 3 day visit to Bolivia, President will hold delegation level talks with his counterpart. 
• He will participate in India-Bolivia business forum meeting and also interact with the students at the University in Santa Cruz.
• Note : Kovind is the 1st President of India to visit Bolivia.
• The UN Security Council has unanimously passed the 1st-ever resolution ordering members to enforce laws against terror financing.
• UNSC's resolution demands all states "ensure that their domestic laws and regulations establish serious criminal offenses" to collect funds or financial resources to terrorist groups or individual criminals.
• It also calls on members to create financial intelligence units. 
• Nations that fail to carry out the resolution would face U.N. sanctions. 
• Brunei is going to impose Death by stoning as a punishment for gay relationships and adultery under the new sharia law which will come into effect next week.
• Note : The sharia law would apply only to Muslims, who make up about two-thirds of Brunei's population.
  

National Current Affairs

• The Home Ministry today announced that the next Census of India will be carried out in 2021 with March 1 as the reference date. 
• For Jammu and Kashmir and snowbound non-synchronous areas of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the reference date will be October 1, 2020. 
• Note : India's last census was carried out in 2011.
• RailTel Corporation of India Limited under the Ministry of Railways has completed the work of turning 1,000 railway stations across India into free WiFi zones. 
• The Reay Raod station is the 1,000th station to get a free WiFi connection. 
• RailTel had started the project in January 2016 from Mumbai Central station in Maharashtra.
• Assam Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Mukesh Sahu launched the Enajori initiative in Guwahati. 
• It is a special initiative for persons with disabilities with an aim that 'No Voter to be Left behind'.
• It is a joint initiative of CEO Assam and Social Welfare Department with an objective to make Lok Sabha Elections accessible to Persons with Disability, PwD voters.
• Under this initiative comprehensive mapping of PwDs will be done in consultation with Booth Level Officers, Divyang Sarothis and a woman mascot-Chandraprabha, to facilitate the PwD voters for barrier-free and inclusive accessible elections.

Science & Technology

• In a major fire-power boost for the country, 4 indigenous 'Dhanush' Howitzer guns were inducted to the Indian Army at a ceremony held the Ordnance factory in Jabalpur.
• The Dhanush gun system is based on designs of the Bofors howitzer which was inducted in the Army in 1980s and would be the third type of artillery gun to be inducted into the force after the K-9 Vajra and the M-777 ultra-light howitzers, as per inputs.
• The 155mm x 45mm calibre artillery gun is capable of firing projectiles at a relatively higher angle with a steep angle of descent.
• Hyderabad based pharma player Laurus Labs Ltd has entered into a strategic partnership with the Global Fund, an organization working towards ending AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria as epidemics, for a period of three-and-a-half years.
• Through this agreement, Laurus Labs will have volume commitments from the Global Fund for the treatment of HIV/AIDS.
• Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir bin Mohammed, inaugurated the 15th edition of Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition, Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition 2019 (LIMA 2019).
• LIMA provides a platform where industry stakeholders could engage and expand their networks towards forging new partnerships and business agreements.
• INS Kadmatt and India’s indigenous supersonic fighter jet Tejas are taking part in the LIMA 2019.

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs

• State-owned Power Finance Corporation (PFC) has completed the acquisition of majority stake in REC Ltd by transferring Rs 14,500 crore to the government.
• This acquisition and merger will make PFC 2nd-largest government-owned financial player in the country based on the current market capital after State Bank of India (SBI) and also PFC will be the third-highest profit-making financial player in India.
• NITI Aayog had organised a day-long FinTech Conclave 2019 in New Delhi. 
• The objective of the conclave was to shape India’s continued ascendancy in FinTech, build the narrative for future strategy and policy efforts, and to deliberate steps for comprehensive financial inclusion. 

Sports Current Affairs

• England football team captain and forward Harry Kane received the MBE award for services to football after leading the English national team to the World Cup semi-final in Russia last year.
• Chelsea's Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain has retired from the Argentina national team with immediate effect. 
• The 31-year-old made 75 appearances for Argentina, scoring 31 goals. 
• Indian shuttlers P V Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth advanced to India Open quarter-finals in their respective categories . 
• RCB captain Virat Kohli became the 1st batsman to score 5,000 runs for one team in Indian Premier League (IPL), achieving the feat during his 32-ball 46-run innings against Mumbai Indians.
• He is the fastest batsman to reach the 5,000-run mark (157 innings) and second batsman after Chennai Super Kings batsman Suresh Raina to achieve the feat.
• The Committee of Administrators, COA running Indian cricket has said that the newly appointed ombudsman by the BCCI, Justice (Retd.) DK Jain will also be its ad-hoc Ethics Officer.

• India's Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale held bilateral talks with his Nepalese counterpart Shanker Das Bairagi in Kathmandu today.
• They reviewed all aspects of bilateral partnership between India and Nepal and exchanged views on issues of mutual interest.
• Both sides also agreed to strengthen the traditionally close, friendly and multi-faceted partnership between the two countries.
  
• Indian Foreign Secretary Gokhale  is on a 2 day visit to Nepal.
• During this visit, he called on Prime Minister of Nepal K P Sharma Oli and Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali.
• President Ram Nath Kovind today had a bilateral meeting with the President of Republic of Latvia Raimonds Vcjonis at Zagreb before concluding his state visit to Croatia.
• During Mr Kovind's visit, India and Croatia signed 4 MOUs for cooperation in the field of tourism, Sports and also Establishment of the Hindi and Sanskrit Chair at University of Zagreb.
• The President also participated in the India-Croatia Business Forum and addressed the students at the University of Zagreb. President has since left for Bolivia on the second leg of his three-nation tour.
• On the second leg of his tour, President will reach Bolivia on March 29th. 
• In Bolivia, the President will hold delegation level talks with his counterpart. 
• He will participate in India-Bolivia business forum and interact with students.

• US President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation recognising Israel's sovereignty over the disputed Golan Heights. 
• Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was with Trump at the White House as he signed the presidential proclamation.
  
• Note : Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed it in 1981 in a move not recognised internationally.
• European Parliament today adopted controversial copyright reforms championed by news publishers and the media business. 
• Under the reform, European law for the first time would hold platforms legally responsible for enforcing copyright, requiring them to check everything that their users post to prevent infringement.
• Pakistan government has approved a proposal to establish a corridor which would allow Hindu pilgrims from India to visit Sharda Peeth in the region of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). 
• Sharda Peeth Corridor will be the 2nd corridor to be established after the Kartarpur Corridor which provides access to Gurudwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur in Pakistan.

• Today is World Tuberculosis Day. The day is observed on 24th March every year to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of TB, and to step up efforts to end the global epidemic. 
• The date marks the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch announced that he had discovered the bacterium that causes TB. 
• Tuberculosis is one of the top ten causes of death worldwide.  
  
• In India, the government has taken many steps in order to tackle the problem of TB by 2025. 
• Theme of World Tuberculosis (TB) Day 2019 : ‘It’s time’ 
• This year's theme focusses on the urgency to act on the commitments made by global leaders to scale up access to prevention and treatment of the disease, build accountability and ensure sufficient and sustainable financing including for research among others.
• This day is one of eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO). The remaining 7 are,

• World Immunization Week
• World Malaria Day
• World No Tobacco Day

• The Indian naval crew has rescued more than 192 people in the Cyclone Idai hit Mozambique in Africa.
• 3 Indian ships, INS Sujata, ICGS Sarathi and INS Shardul are undertaking Humanitarian Assistance Disaster Relief in coordination with local authorities and the High Commission of India, Maputo.
• Medical assistance has been provided to around 1,400 people in medical camps set up by the Indian Navy.
• Helicopter Chetak took several sorties to facilitate aerial survey by Disaster management officials of Mozambique, for evacuation of people in coordination with local authorities and for dropping of food and water packets in cyclone-affected areas.
• Note : Indian Navy was the first responder in the evolving humanitarian crises in the aftermath of Cyclone Idai that hit Mozambique earlier this month causing widespread destruction and loss of lives.
• Italy has signed a non-binding protocol with China to take part in Beijing's new Silk Road of transport and trade links stretching from Asia to Europe. 
• Note : Italy became the 1st G7 country to sign up for the project.
• Chinese President Xi Jinping and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte both attended a ceremony in Rome yesterday for the signing of 29 Memoranda of Understanding, which Italian media said were worth 5.6 to 8 billion US Dollars.
• Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena today handed over a proposal seeking to declare the Theravada Tripitaka, the sacred ure of Buddhists, as a UNESCO World Heritage.
• The proposal was officially handed over during a national ceremony held in Kandy to the UN resident coordinator in Sri Lanka, Hanaa Singer.
• Note : The Theravada Tripitaka was declared a National heritage of Sri Lanka by President in January this year.
• Buddha’s teachings were initially propagated through word of mouth for generations till the Tripitaka was finally written down in Sri Lanka about 100 years BC. 
• The teachings are contained in three volumes titled ‘Sutta, Vinaya and Abhidhamma’.

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs

• In it’s Global Economic Outlook report, Fitch Ratings has cut India’s economic growth forecast for the next financial year 2019-20 starting from April 1 to 6.8 per cent from its previous estimate of 7 per cent, on the account of weaker than expected momentum in the economy.
• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has postponed the implementation of Indian Accounting Standards by the banks for the second straight year. 
• It said necessary legislative amendments are still under consideration by the government. 
• Japan has donated $69 million to the United Nations World Food Programme to provide vital aid to 28 countries in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, with the biggest shares of the money being earmarked for Yemen and Iraq.
• World Food Programme is a leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience.

• Honoring the best Hindi Language films of the year 2018, the 64th Filmfare Awards 2019 ceremony was held at Jio Garden, BKC, Mumbai. 
• The ceremony was hosted by bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan, Rajkumar Rao and Vicky Kaushal. 
• Alia Bhatt won the Best Actress award for her role in 'Raazi', clinching the Filmfare top actress trophy for the second time.

• Fugitive jeweller Nirav Modi, wanted in the ₹14,000-crore PNB scam, has been arrested in London and will be produced in the court later today. 
• This comes days after the 48-year-old was seen walking on the streets of London by a reporter of the UK newspaper The Telegraph. 
• Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai has overtaken China's largest coach manufacturing unit to become the largest rail coach maker in the world. 
• From April 2018 to February 2019, ICF manufactured 2,919 coaches, while the biggest Chinese firm produces around 2,600 coaches/year. 
• ICF registered 40% increase as compared to the production in the first 11 months of the previous financial year.

• India, Pakistan and the other members states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) will take part in a joint anti-terrorism exercise to be held this year by the grouping.
• The decision to hold the joint exercise 'Sary-Arka-Antiterror 2019' was announced during the 34th meeting of the SCO's Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) council held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
• The SCO, in which China plays an influential role, is also comprised of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan. 
• India and Pakistan were admitted into the bloc in 2017.
• Singapore, Paris and Hong Kong share the title of the world's most expensive city, according to The Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) Worldwide Cost of Living Survey. 
• Switzerland's Zurich and Geneva and Japan's Osaka are also among top five most expensive cities. 
• Note : According to the report, India's Bengaluru, Chennai and New Delhi are among the 10 cheapest locations surveyed.
  

National Current Affairs

• International workshop on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure will begin in New Delhi tomorrow.
• The 2-day event is being organised by the National Disaster Management Authority in collaboration with United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction.
• Aim of this workshop : To identify good practices of disaster risk management in key infrastructure sectors.
• It will bring together countries from different parts of the world, multilateral development banks, UN agencies, academia and research institutions.
• The National Green Tribunal has directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to prepare a noise pollution map and remedial action plan to solve the issue across the country.
• The green panel said the absence of implementation of noise pollution norms affects health of citizens, especially infants and senior citizens.
• It also affects sleep, comfort, studies and other legitimate activities, it said.

International Current Affairs

• Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi have been hit by "Idai", a vicious cyclone that has killed nearly 150 people, left hundreds more missing and stranded tens of thousands. 
• According to the UN and government officials, Idai Cyclone has affected more than 1.5 million people in the three southern African countries.
• India has decided to divert three Indian naval ships to the port city of Beira in Mozambique to provide humanitarian assistance to the people affected by  tropical cyclone ‘IDAI’.
• The ships will provide relief materials in the form of food, clothes and medicines.
• Note : In 2017, India had provided 10 million dollars  to Mozambique  for food grains after the country suffered food shortage due to natural calamities.
  

National Current Affairs

• The Election Commission today issued a notification for the 1st phase of Lok Sabha polls.
• 91 Parliamentary constituencies spread over 20 states and Union Territories will go to polls in this phase.  
• Last date for filing of nominations : 25th March 2019
• Scrutiny of the nomination papers : 26th March 2019
• Last date for withdrawal of nomination papers : 28th March. 
• For the first phase of elections, polling will be held on 11th April 2019. 
• Elections will be held for all 25 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh, and 17 in Telangana in the first phase.  
• Among other constituencies going to polls in this phase are : 8 in Uttar Pradesh; 5 in Uttarakhand; 4 in Bihar; 7 in Maharashtra; 5 in Assam; 4 in Odisha; 2 each in Jammu and Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and West Bengal; and one each in Chhattisgarh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.
• Election Commission also issued the Notification for all 32 Assembly seats in Sikkim, 60 constituencies in Arunachal Pradesh and Assembly elections for all the 175 Assembly constituencies of Andhra Pradesh. 28 Assembly constituencies in Odisha will go to the polls in Phase 1.
• The counting of votes will be taken up on 23rd of May after the completion of all phases of polling.

• Prime Minister of Guinea Dr. Ibrahima Kassory Fofana  has arrived in New Delhi this evening on a 10 day official visit to India.
• During the visit, Mr Fofona will call on President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan tomorrow.
• He will also have a meeting with Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu.
• He will address the inaugural session of 14th CII-EXIM Bank Conclave on India-Africa Partnership Project in New Delhi tomorrow.
• Nations made the 1st global commitment to reduce the consumption of single-use plastics, including plastic bags, bottles and straws, by 2030. 
• The pledge came after marathon talks at the United Nations Environment Assembly in Kenya. 
• The nations also made other commitments, including reducing food waste and marine litter, as well as developing and sharing innovative technologies.
• External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is on a 2-day official visit to Maldives.
• She held a high-level meeting at the Maldives Foreign Ministry at Male. 
• Several ministers, including Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid, are present at the meeting to discuss bilateral cooperation and development assistance to the Maldives.
• During the visit, the Minister of External Affairs will call on President of the Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the Speaker of Parliament Qasim Ibrahim and meet with several ministers.
• Both sides will discuss ongoing and future collaboration arrangements.
• It is expected that discussions will focus on development cooperation, cooperation in the field of health, and enhancing people-to-people contact.

National Current Affairs

• The 1st Indian-origin woman in space, Kalpana Chawla was born on this day (17th March) in the year 1962. 
• Chawla moved to the United States in 1982 and joined NASA in 1988. 
• Describing her first mission in space, she said, "You are just your intelligence", on experiencing weightlessness. 
• The astronaut died with six crew members on her second mission aboard the Columbia spacecraft in 2003.
• Note : Sunita Williams became the second Indian-origin woman to travel into space in 2006.
• Former IAS officer Shah Faesal, who became the 1st IAS topper from J&K in 2009, has launched a political party named 'Jammu and Kashmir Peoples' Movement' at a function in Srinagar today. 
• He resigned from the Indian Administrative Service in January to protest killings in Kashmir. 
• The Geographical Indications Registry has granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Coorg Arabica Coffee, Wayanad Robusta Coffee, Chikmagalur Arabica Coffee, Araku Valley Arabica Coffee and Bababudangiris Arabica Coffee.
• About GI Tag :
• A GI tag is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation by virtue of their geographical association.
• The tag conveys an assurance of quality and distinctiveness which is essentially attributable to the geographical origin of the product. 
• The owner of the GI tag has exclusive rights over the product.
• The NITI Aayog and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) organized the 1st workshop on development of the India Energy Modelling Forum (IEMF), which has been envisaged as a pan-stakeholder platform for debating ideas, scenario-planning & discussing the India's energy future.
• The 2-day workshop, being held with the support of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), was organized under the Sustainable Growth Pillar of the India-U.S. Strategic Energy Partnership. 
• The inaugural session of the workshop was chaired by Dr Rajiv Kumar, Vice-Chairman, NITI Aayog and Mr Mark A. White, Mission Director, USAID India.
• The National Green Tribunal (NGT), has directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), to prepare a noise pollution map and remedial action plan to solve the issue across the country.
• A  bench headed by National Green Tribunal Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel directed the CPCB to identify noise pollution hotspots and categorise cities with specified hotspots and propose a remedial action plan within three months.
• The NGT said the absence of implementation of noise pollution norms affects health of citizens, especially infants and senior citizens.

New Appointments

• Retired Supreme Court Judge Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose has been recommended to be India's 1st Lokpal (Anti-corruption ombudsman of India).
• Selection Committee for Lokpal, comprising the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and an eminent jurist Mukul Rohatgi finalised Justice Ghose's name in a meeting today.

Sports Current Affairs

• National record holder Irfan KT became the 1st Indian from athletics to qualify for 2020 Tokyo Olympics. 
• Irfan achieved the feat after finishing 4th in the 20-km event of Asian Race Walking Championships in Japan's Nomi. 
• 18-year-old Diksha Dagar became the 2nd Indian to win an event on Ladies European Tour after clinching South African Women's Open in Cape Town. 
• Note : Aditi Ashok was the first Indian to win on the Ladies European Tour after clinching Hero Women's Indian Open in Gurugram in 2016. 
• FIFA President Gianni Infantino today confirmed plans to launch an expanded 24-team Club World Cup in 2021 following a meeting in Miami. 
• The new tournament, which has recently drawn threats of a boycott from leading European football clubs including Manchester United and Barcelona, is to be staged in June-July 2021 instead of the Confederations Cup.
• India have bagged 70 medals (18 golds, 22 silver and 30 bronze) so far in Special Olympics, which are being held at Abu Dhabi. 
• In Roller Skating, Supreet Singh from Haryana in 1000-meter, Rishabh Jain from New Delhi in 1000-meter and Priya Prakash Gada from Maharashtra in 100-meter won a Gold Medal each. 
• Amanjot Singh won gold in the squat contest after lifting 385kg.
• Indian roller skaters bagged a staggering 29 medals comprising 9 golds, 13 silver and two bronze. 
• The powerlifters of India also found the podium 23 times by the end of the second day of competitions.
• The cyclists fetched two yellow metals while the judokas brought in two more gold medals. 
• The athletics and swimming contingents, who are competing in Dubai, were also successful in winning eight medals. 
• About Special Olympics 2019 : 
• The Special Olympics World Games are an international sporting competition for athletes with intellectual disabilities, organized by the IOC-recognised Special Olympics organisation.
• The Special Olympics World Games 2019 is being hosted by the cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
• For the 1st time, the Special Olympics is being held in the Middle East and North Africa region. 
• The host UAE had introduced the term “people of determination” as part of a new National Strategy for Empowering People with Disabilities.
• Motto of Special Olympics : “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me brave in the attempt.’
• Previous Special Olympics were held in Austria (2017) and the next Special Olympics will be held in Sweden (2021).

• During the meeting, India conveyed its support for the priority areas set out by Brazil, particularly to take forward BRICS cooperation on counter terrorism in a meaningful and concrete manner with BRICS member countries.

• According to a recent report released by the Election Commission, West Bengal has the maximum number of 1st-time voters, around 20.1 lakh, in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. 
• With around 16.7 lakh young voters, Uttar Pradesh stood at 2nd spot followed by Madhya Pradesh with 13.6 lakh first-time voters.
• Note : The number of people eligible to vote has reportedly increased by 8.4 crore as compared to 2014 General Elections.

• The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee has tied up with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to set up a Space Technology Cell within its campus.

• Australia will embark on its largest ever defence engagement with Sri Lanka next week as part of the Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2019.

• After departing Sri Lanka, Australian Defence excercise team will visit India and other regional partners.

• China has again blocked the bid to designate Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed Chief Azhar Masood as a global terrorist in the United Nations Security Council 1267 list.
• The proposal was moved by France the UK and the US on February 27, on the backdrop of Pulwama Terror Attack.
• The UK's Parliament members have voted by 312 to 308 to reject the idea of Britain leaving the European Union (EU) without a deal. 
• The Parliament will now vote on whether to ask the EU for permission to delay the date for departure, which was scheduled for March 29. 
• Earlier, the MPs had rejected PM Theresa May's Brexit deal.

• Italy bans unvaccinated children from school.
• All parents have been warned not to send their children to school unless they've been properly vaccinated, while children under the age of six can be turned away altogether.

• Venezuela's parliament declared a 'state of alarm' as the power outage entered its fifth day. 
• Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has blamed the US for the blackout, claiming it attacked its main hydroelectric plant in Guri. 
• The lack of electricity has affected the water and food supply and also left patients without proper treatment in hospitals.

• Indian lender HDFC Bank Limited (Housing Development Finance Corporation) crossed the ₹6 lakh crore market capitalisation mark for the 1st time today.
• With this, the bank has became only 3rd Indian company to achieve the milestone.

• India has banned Boeing 737 Max aircraft from its airspace from 4 pm today, following the fatal crash of a plane of the same type in Ethiopia on Sunday, which killed all 157 people on board.
• Note : China, Indonesia, South Korea and Mongolia have already grounded their fleets of Boeing's 737 MAX 8 aircraft in response to the Ethiopian Airlines crash.
• Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, who holds the finance portfolio, presented the budget of 2019-20 in the ongoing assembly session today with a fiscal deficit of 1323 crore rupees, which is around 3.65 per cent of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP).
• As per the budget estimates for 2019-20, excluding borrowings, the total receipt stood at 14463 crore rupees.
• India, which is the world’s largest consumer of gold, ranked 11th in Gold Holding, according to recently released World Gold Council (WGC) Report 2019.
• The current holding of India has been pegged at 607 tonnes.
• The top spot is occupied by the United States with Gold reserves of 8,133.5 tonnes, followed by Germany with 3,369.7 tonnes.

• The United States has begun building parts for a new ground-launched cruise missile after suspending the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. 
• The Cold War-era pact banned both the US and Russia from using short and medium-range missiles. 
• The US has suspended its obligations under the agreement, accusing Russia of violating the treaty.

New Appointments

• Private Sector Lender Axis Bank today appointed Rakesh Makhija as Non-Executive Chairman for a period of 3 years. 
• He is going to replace Sanjiv Misra when his term ends on July 17. 
• Defence Ministry has initiated the process to appoint the next Navy Chief and the decision is expected to be announced soon. 
• The incumbent Navy Chief, Admiral Sunil Lanba, is scheduled to retire on May 31 this year.
• Note : As per seniority of the Navy, Vice Admiral Bimal Verma is the senior-most among the top three officers of the force.

• Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal (67) has announced his retirement from football.
• In his managerial career, Van Gaal won one Champions League, four Dutch league titles, two La Ligas, and one Bundesliga title.
