- Today (27th October) is World Day for Audiovisual Heritage.
- This commemorative day was chosen by UNESCO in the year 2005 to raise of awareness of the significance of and preservation risks recorded sound and audiovisual documents (films, sound and video recordings, radio and television programmes).
- Theme of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage 2018 : “Your Story is Moving”.
- Today is Independence Day of Turkmenistan.
- It became independent upon the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

- According to the Asian Economic Integration Report 2018 by the Asian Development Bank, most of the outbound migrants were from India in 2017, followed by China and Bangladesh.
- The report also reveals that the outward migration in Asia has outpaced inward migration.
National Current Affairs
- The 2nd edition of India Mobile Congress (IMC-2018) was concluded today at New Delhi.
- Being held from October 25-27, 2018, this festival was organised by Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).
- Theme of IMC 2018 : “New Digital Horizons. Connect. Create. Innovate”.
- The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development has launched a new scheme titled SPARC, which aims to improve the research ecosystem of India’s higher educational institutions by facilitating academic and research collaborations between Indian Institutions and the best institutions in the world.
- SPARC : Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration
- Under this scheme 600 joint research proposals will be awarded for 2 years.
- The Central Government today launched a new scheme titled IMPRESS, to promote research in Social Sciences.
- IMPRESS : Impactful Policy Research in Social Sciences
- The objective of this scheme is to identify and fund research proposals in social sciences with maximum impact on the governance and society.
- The government support would include a total funding of Rs.414 crore on 1500 projects for policy themes in the social sciences at the cost of Rs. 20-25 Lakh per project.
- Assam's capital Guwahati will be connected with the capital cities of 6 South Asian countries by the end of December.
Science & Technology
- The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully conducted a test for the safe and precise landing of Vikram, the lander aboard Chandrayaan-2 for India's second Moon mission.
- The test was meant to assess the performance of navigational, guidance and control system of the moon lander.
- Note : The lander was named 'Vikram' in honour of ISRO Founder Vikram Sarabhai.
- Virgin Orbit has unveiled the first pictures of its LauncherOne rocket that can travel at more than 20 times the speed of sound.
- Attached to Virgin's 747 aircraft Cosmic Girl that was converted to launch rockets, LauncherOne is designed to carry small satellites into orbit around the Earth.
- The plane will carry LauncherOne to an altitude of 30,000 feet.

- 'Blooming Buds', a film about a mother and daughter's relationship after the former's divorce, won Best film award at GD Goenka University's film and photography festival 'Fotographia 2018'.
- Theme of this year's festival is : 'Beautiful Lives: Human Dignity, Human Rights.'
- Miss Paraguay Clara Sosa has won the beauty pageant Miss Grand International 2018.
- India's Meenakshi Chaudhary became the first runner-up.
- The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-Bombay) has topped the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings from India followed by IIT Delhi and IIT Madras.
- 8 Indian universities (IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Madras, IISC Bangalore, IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Kanpur, Delhi University and IIT-Roorkee) have figured among the top 100 in the list of Asia’s top 50 universities.

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- Kerala government owned financial institution, Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) has announced that it is going to issue Masala bonds worth Rs. 5,000 crore to mobilise funds for various development works.
- KIIFB has appointed Standard & Poor’s and Fitch Ratings for rating the masala bonds issue.
- The bonds will be listed in London and Singapore stock exchanges.
- The funds will be raised in tranches over period of 10 years.
New Appointments
- Former President Mahindra Rajapaksa has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
- This came after the President Maithripala Sirisena today sacked current Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe following months of tension between the two leaders that led to a political crisis.
- BBC’s Digital Launch Editor in Indian languages, Trushar Barot, is joining Facebook to fight fake news in India.
- Barot, who joined BBC in 2001, will “lead and develop integrity initiatives for Facebook" in the country.
- This comes after the Indian government asked all global internet and social media platforms to appoint local grievance officers.
Sports Current Affairs
- The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has announced that it is going to raise the prize money for the Women's World Cup from $15 million to $30 million starting with next year's edition in France.
