  • The Indo Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP) is celebrating its 57th Raising day today. 
    • The force was raised on 24th October in 1962.
  • Today (24th October) is World Polio Day.
    • This day observes the importance of ending polio.
    • Theme of World Polio Day 2018 :  “End Polio Now”.
  • Today is United Nations Day.
    • Unted Nations was formed on 24th October 1945.
    • October 24 has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. 
    • The organization turns 73 today.

  • World Development Information Day is being observed today.
    • The purpose behind celebrating this day is to drawing the attention of world public opinion towards the development problems and for strengthening International cooperation to solve them.
  • Today (24th October) is Independence Day of Zambia.
  • India, Iran and Afghanistan today held their 1st Trilateral meeting.
    • In this meeting, they discussed the development of Chabahar port project. 
    • The port is considered crucial for trade among the three nations after Pakistan denied transit access to India.
    • The meeting assumes significance as the strategically-located port on the energy-rich Iran's southern coast was coming under the ambit of US sanctions on Tehran.  
    • The Indian delegation at the trilateral meeting was led by TS Tirumurti, Secretary (Economic Relations). 
    • The Afghan and Iran delegations were led by respective deputy ministers of Transport.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today allowed Fino Payments Bank (one of India's first payments banks) to open new accounts after it submitted a compliance report.
    • Fino payments bank has been barred by the central bank from adding new customers since the end of May because an RBI audit revealed that some Fino accounts had deposits in excess of the stipulated amount of ₹1 lakh.
  • India's first cryptocurrency ATM, which was not operational yet, was closed down today within a week of its installation in Bengaluru and its owner Harish BV, the co-founder of Unocoin was arrested because the kiosk was set up without requisite permissions from the government. 
    • Note : India does not recognise cryptocurrency as legal tender.
  • Saudi Arabia has agreed to provide $3 billion in foreign currency support for a year to Pakistan to help address the country's balance of payment crisis. 
    • It also agreed to provide a one-year deferred payment facility for import of oil, worth up to $3 billion. 
    • The development came during Pakistan PM Imran Khan's ongoing visit to Saudi Arabia.

    • This GoM will recommend action required for effective execution of existing provisions to address harassment at workplace.

Awards & Honors
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been awarded the Seoul Peace Prize 2018.
    • He was honored with this award for his contribution to international cooperation and fostering global economic growth
  • Invest India, the country’s investment promotion body, has won the UN Award for excellence in promoting investments in sustainable development
    • The award was presented by Armen Sarkissian (Armenian President) to Deepak Bagla (CEO of Invest India) at the World Investment Forum, Geneva.
  • A young woman from Haryana, Nishtha Dudeja has won the Miss Deaf Asia 2018 title at an international pageant held in Prague recently.
    • With this, Nishtha became the 1st Indian to have won any title at the Miss Deaf World Pageant.
New Appointments
  • 1986 batch IPS officer of Odisha cadre, M Nageshwar Rao, has been appointed as the Interim Director of CBI
    • Before taking over the post, he was appointed as the Joint Director of CBI in 2016 for a period of five years. 
  • IT firm Cyient has appointed Vikas Sehgal as an independent director.
    • The firm also appointmented Peter F. Longo as the chairman of Cyient Inc.
Sports Current Affairs
  • India captain Virat Kohli has become the fastest batsman to score 10,000 runs in the history of ODI cricket.
    • He achieved the feat in his 205th innings, against Windies today. 
    • With this, Kohli overtook Sachin Tendulkar, who had reached 10,000 ODI runs in his 259th innings, against Australia in 2001.
    • Note : Kohli was also the fastest to 8,000 and 9,000 ODI runs.
