  • Disqualification - a situation in which someone is not allowed to take part in something because they have committed an offence or have done something that is not allowed by the rules
  • Rebel - someone who tries to remove a government or leader using force
  • Upheld - to show that you support something such as an idea by what you say or do
  • Endorsement - an occasion when someone gives official or public support to a particular person or thing
  • Byelection - an election in one particular area to choose a new representative in parliament or on a council, or to replace someone who has died or left the job
  • Acquire - to get something
  • Significance - the importance that something has because it affects other things
  • Bringing down - to cause a government or politician to lose power
  • Defection - to leave a country, political party, or organization and go to another one
  • Render - to make someone or something be or become something
  • For dear life - using all your strength, speed, or determination in order to avoid danger or serious trouble
  • Continuance - the process of continuing
  • Ignominious - very embarrassing, especially because of making you seem very unsuccessful or unimportant
  • Retain - to keep someone or something
  • Majority - the number of votes by which a person or party wins an election
  • Grievance - a complaint about being treated in an unfair way
  • Constituency - a division of a country that elects a representative to a parliament
  • Upheaval - a sudden or violent change, especially one that affects people’s lives
  • Legitimacy - the fact that something is legal
  • Vote of confidence - a voting process in which people show support for a person or group in power
  • Arithmetic - the number of people or things that are involved in a situation, and the way in which they affect the situation
  • At stake - likely to be lost or damaged if something fails
  • Flock of - a large group of people
  • Fight off - to stop someone who is trying to attack you
  • Erosion - the gradual reduction or destruction of something important
  • Wilderness - a period of time when you are not as successful as you were previously
  • Ultimate - happening at the end of a process or activity
  • Ally - someone who is ready to help you, especially against someone else who is causing problems for you
  • Breakaway - consisting of people who have decided to separate from a larger group
  • Akin to something - similar to something
  • Distinct - separate and different in a way that is clear
  • Mount - to prepare for and begin an activity or event

  • Rejuvenation - the process of making something more effective, modern, and successful by using new ideas and methods
  • Decentralized - used to describe organizations or their activities which are not controlled from one central place, but happen in many different places
  • Sludge - wet dirt, or any other thick, wet substance
  • Vital - very important, necessary, or essential
  • Sanitation - conditions and processes relating to people’s health, especially the systems that supply water and deal with human waste
  • In spite of - used for referring to a fact that makes something else surprising
  • Faecal - the solid waste passed out of the body of a human or animal
  • Expel - to force something out of a container or someone’s body
  • Untreated - in a natural state, and perhaps harmful
  • Sustainable - capable of continuing for a long time at the same level
  • Agenda - all the things that need to be done or that need to be thought about or solved
  • Statistic - a group of numbers that represent facts or that describe a situation
  • Household - the people who live in a house or flat when they are considered as a single unit
  • Septage - excrement and other waste material contained in or removed from a septic tank
  • Wetland - low land that is often covered with water from the lake, river, or sea next to it
  • Grave - used for emphasizing how serious something is
  • Outlay - the amount of money that you must spend in order to buy something or to start a new business or project
  • Impose - to give someone something unpleasant to deal with
  • Insanitary - insanitary conditions are dirty and dangerous to your health, usually because there is a lack of water pipes, toilets, drains etc, so that it is difficult to keep things clean
  • Intervention - a situation in which someone becomes involved in a particular issue, problem etc in order to influence what happens
  • Stigmatize - to treat a particular type of behaviour as wrong or embarrassing and to try to make people who behave in this way feel ashamed
  • Untenable - impossible to continue because of serious problems, opposition, or criticism
  • Scavenge - to search through things that other people have thrown away in order to see if there is anything that you want
  • Violation - an action that is in opposition to a law, agreement, principle etc
  • Septic tank - a large container buried under the ground and used for collecting waste from toilets
  • Egalitarian - supporting a social system in which everyone has equal status and the same money and opportunities
  • Transform - to make someone or something completely different, usually in a way that makes them more attractive, easier to use etc
