  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Uncertainty - a nervous feeling that you have because you think bad things might happen
  • Instability - a situation that keeps changing, so that you are worried about what might happen
  • Irony - a strange, funny, or sad situation in which things happen in the opposite way to what you would expect
  • Absolute - very great, or complete
  • Apparent - easy to see or understand
  • Concede - to admit that something is true
  • Intervention - a situation in which someone becomes involved in a particular issue, problem etc in order to influence what happens
  • Tenure  -  the period of time during which someone has an important job or is an elected official
  • Saddle - to have control of something
  • Rebellion - an attempt to remove a government or leader by force
  • Coalition - a temporary union of different political parties that agree to form a government together
  • Inherent - an inherent quality is a basic or essential feature that gives something its character
  • Contradiction - a difference in two or more statements, ideas, stories etc that makes it impossible for both or all of them to be true
  • Relentless - something bad that is relentless never seems to stop or improve
  • Amoral - someone who is amoral does not care whether or not their behaviour is morally right
  • Pursuit - the process of trying to achieve something
  • Evidently - used for saying that something is obvious
  • Elated - extremely happy and excited
  • Forget and forgive - to decide not to continue being angry about something that someone has done, and not to allow your memory of it to influence your future relationship
  • Machinations - secret, complicated, and clever plans and actions intended to achieve an aim
  • Rebel - someone who tries to remove a government or leader using force
  • Defection - to leave a country, political party, or organization and go to another one
  • Tenure - the period of time during which someone has an important job or is an elected official
  • Pre-empt - to do or say something that stops someone else’s plan or action
  • By-polls - an election held in a single political constituency to fill a vacancy arising during a government's term of office
  • Alter - to make something or someone different
  • Linger - to stay somewhere longer than is necessary
  • Reputation - the opinion that people have about how good or how bad someone or something is
  • Investor - a person or organization that invests money
  • Dishonourable - considered bad or morally wrong
  • High-handedness - using power or authority more forcefully than is needed, without thinking about the feelings or wishes of other people
  • Rapacity - the quality of having or showing a strong wish to take things for yourself, usually using unfair methods or force
  • Powerhouse - a person or thing that has a lot of strength or energy
  • Medium-term - the period of time that lasts a few months or years from the present time
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Garner - to collect or obtain a large amount of something useful or important
  • Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another

  • Terror - a strong feeling of fear
  • Injure - to hurt someone and cause damage to their body
  • Grave - so serious that you feel worried
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • War-torn - a war-torn country or place has been badly damaged by a war, especially a war that involves different groups from the same country
  • Amid - if something happens amid particular feelings or events, it happens while people have these feelings or while these events are happening
  • Former - used for describing someone or something that had a particular job, title, status etc in the past, but not now
  • Critic - someone who does not like something and states their opinion about it
  • Running-mate - someone who takes part in an election for two jobs with another person, and who will get the less important job if they win
  • Assault - a physical attack on someone, or the crime of physically attacking someone
  • Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
  • Insurgent - someone who belongs to a group of people fighting to take control of their country by force
  • Fortify - to protect a place against attack by building strong walls, towers, or other structures around it
  • Full-fledged - completely developed or trained
  • Leverage - the power to make someone do what you want
  • Bargaining - discussions between people in order to reach agreement on something such as prices, wages, working conditions, etc
  • Apparent - easy to see or understand
  • Minority - a part of a population that is different in race, religion, or culture from most of the population
  • Notorious - famous for something bad
  • Chronic - a chronic problem is always happening or returning and is very difficult to solve
  • Eroding - to gradually damage the surface of rock or land so that it begins to disappear, or to be gradually damaged in this way
  • Beleaguered - having a lot of problems or criticism to deal with
  • Prolonged - continuing for a long time
  • Stalemate - a situation in which progress is impossible because the people or groups involved cannot agree
  • Hinterland - an area that is a long way from a town or city
  • Urban - relating to towns and cities, or happening there
  • Leeway - the amount of freedom that someone has to make their own decisions or to take action
  • Ceasefire - an agreement to stop fighting for a period of time, especially in order to discuss permanent peace
  • Resolute  - extremely determined
