Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Burning bright: on India’s tiger census"
  • Census  - a count for official purposes, especially one to count the number of people living in a country and to collect information about them:
  • Fiasco - a complete and embarrassing failure
  • Wipeout - total destruction, or failure
  • Conservation - the protection of plants and animals, natural areas, and interesting and important structures and buildings, especially from the damaging effects of human activity
  • Marvel - to show or feel surprise or admiration
  • Populous - a populous nation, city, area etc has many people living in it
  • Preserve - to take care of a place or building in order to prevent it from being harmed or destroyed
  • Heritage - the art, buildings, traditions, and beliefs that a society considers important to its history and culture
  • Amid - if something happens amid particular feelings or events, it happens while people have these feelings or while these events are happening
  • Fast-paced - including a lot of different things happening quickly
  • Majority - most of the people or things in a group
  • Assessment - the process of making a judgment or forming an opinion, after considering something or someone carefully
  • Assert - to state firmly that something is true
  • Abundance - a very large quantity of something
  • Methodological - related to the methods and principles used for doing a particular kind of work, especially scientific or academic research
  • Rigorous - thorough and careful
  • Scrutiny - careful examination of someone or something
  • Aspect - a particular part, feature, or quality of something
  • Staggering - extremely surprising
  • Charismatic - a charismatic person has a strong personal quality that makes other people like them and be attracted to them
  • Landscape - the main features of a situation or activity
  • Witness - to see something happen
  • Abundance - a very large quantity of something
  • Imperative - extremely important and urgent
  • Habitat - the type of place that a particular animal usually lives in or a particular plant usually grows in, for example a desert, forest, or lake
  • Mere - used for emphasizing that something is small or unimportant
  • Prey - an animal that is caught by another animal and eaten
  • Carnivore - an animal that eats other animals
  • Caution - careful thought and lack of hurry in order to try to avoid risks or danger

  • Flee - to escape by running away, especially because of danger or fear
  • Rally - an increase in the value of something after a period when its value has been low
  • Investor - a person or organization that invests money
  • Palpable - if a mood or feeling is palpable, it is so strong that you seem to feel it physically yourself
  • Nifty - well designed, effective, or easy to use
  • In contrast - used when you are comparing two things or people and saying that the second one is very different from the first
  • Enthusiastic - very interested in something or excited by it
  • Prospect - the possibility that something will happen, especially something good
  • Reform - a change that is intended to correct a situation that is wrong or unfair, or make a system work more effectively
  • Buy back - an arrangement in which someone agrees to buy back shares or goods that they previously sold to someone
  • Mandatory - ordered by a law or rule
  • Prelude - an event that happens before and introduces a more important event
  • Downturn - a reduction in economic or business activity
  • Slash - to reduce something by a large amount
  • Catch up - to improve in order to reach the same standard or rate as someone or something
  • Bleak - without any reasons to feel happy or hopeful
  • Turmoil - a state of excitement or uncontrolled activity
  • Erosion - the gradual reduction or destruction of something important
  • Cheerleader - a strong supporter of a person, organization, or idea
  • Vocal - someone who is vocal expresses their opinion frequently and strongly
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Sell-off - to sell something quickly and for a low price, usually because you need money
  • Vote with your feet - to express an opinion through your actions, for example by not going to a place or by deciding not to spend money
