International Current Affairs
- India is going to host a World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Meeting of Developing Countries and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in New Delhi during 13th & 14th May 2019.
- The 2-day meeting is an effort to bring together the developing countries and the LDCs on a platform for sharing common concerns on various issues affecting the WTO and work together to address these issues.
- A total of 186 countries, except the US, have signed a legally-binding agreement aimed to reduce the export of plastic waste.
- The nations party to the agreement will now have to obtain consent from the countries they export plastic waste to.
- The agreement updates the 1989 Basel Convention on the control of hazardous waste to include plastic.
- Pakistan has banned 11 outfits linked to 26/11 Mumbai attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed's Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), its charity wing Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation (FIF) and Masood Azhar's Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).
- Pakistan announced a ban on JeM earlier this month after Azhar was designated as a global terrorist by the United Nations Security Council.
- It had banned JuD and FIF in March.
- Republic of Ireland has become only the 2nd country in world to declare a climate emergency.
- Note : Earlier on 1 May 2019, Britain’s parliament became the first in world to declare a climate emergency.
National Current Affairs
- 11th May 2019 was observed as National Technology Day.
- This day is observed in India to mark Indian technological advancement.
- The day, May 11, has been declared National Technology Day by the Indian Government in order to commemorate the history of India's technological capability and expertise.
- On this day in the year 1998, India successfully tested 5 nuclear powered bombs in Pokhran, Rajasthan, to demonstrate its defence capability, which is regarded as one of the significant moments of Indian history.
- On this day in the year 1999, the first indigenous aircraft 'Hansa-3' was test flown at Bangalore.
- Voting for the 6th phase of the 17th Lok Sabha elections has begun on 11th May.
- The phase covers 59 constituencies across 7 states and union territories including Delhi, UP, Haryana, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh.
- Over 1,13,167 polling booths are in place for smooth conduct of polls, while 10.18 crore registered voters will decide the fate of 979 candidates.
- The Tamil Nadu government has issued an order to district collectors for issuing income and asset certificates to persons belonging to general category for availing reservation under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota.
- The order said a person should not own 5 acres of agriculture land and above.
- For calculating the income, family members' income from all sources will be considered.
- Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced a ₹1,600 crore relief package for livelihood support for farmers, fishermen, women self-help group members and others affected by Cyclone Fani.
- Patnaik also launched the web portal rebuild.odisha.gov.in to crowdfund various projects in cyclone-affected areas.
- At least 43 people were killed in the cyclone which hit the Odisha coast on May 3.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- India's industrial output contracted for the 1st time in 21 months, falling 0.1% in March 2019.
- Manufacturing output with a 78% weightage in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) contracted 0.4% during the month.
- Note : The Indian economy grew 6.6% in the December quarter, the slowest in five quarters.
- PM Narendra Modi and his council of ministers incurred expenses of ₹393 crore on foreign and domestic travel in the last five fiscal years, an RTI query has revealed.
- The Ministers of State incurred expenses of ₹29 crore on foreign visits and ₹53 crore on domestic.
- In 2014-15, ₹88 crore was spent on foreign travels by PM and his ministers.
Science & Technology
- Japan has started testing world's fastest bullet train, the 'ALFA-X' version of the Shinkansen train, capable of reaching 400 kmph speed.
- It will be tested twice a week after midnight between Sendai and Aomori, which are around 280 kilometres apart.
- On entering operation, it will run at up to 360 kmph, outpacing China's Fuxing train, which runs 10 kmph slower.
- US aircraft manufacturing company Boeing has handed over first of the 22 AH-64E Apache Guardian attack helicopters to the Indian Air Force, nearly three-and-half years after the choppers' deal was sealed.
- The helicopter can carry out precision attacks at standoff ranges and operate in hostile airspace with threats from the ground.
- It can also transmit and receive battlefield picture to and from the weapon systems.
Deaths
- ITC's Non-Executive Chairman Y C Deveshwar (72) passed away.
- The Padma Bhushan awardee, who spearheaded the diversification of ITC to an FMCG company, stepped down as chief executive of ITC in 2017.
- Between 1991 and 1994, he led state-owned carrier Air India as the Chairman and Managing Director.
MOUs & Agreements
- India and Nepal have inked a deal on procurement of demo train that operates on diesel.
- The contract agreement was signed between India’s Konkan Railways Corporation Ltd and Nepal’s Department of Railways to supply two 1600 HP Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train sets.
New Appointments
- Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka was sworn-in as the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court.
- He now becomes 31st Chief Justice of Karnataka HC.
- His oath of office was administered by Karnataka Governor Vajubhai R Vala, at Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru.
- Jyothy Laboratories, which sells products under brands like Ujala, Pril and Margo, has appointed M R Jyothy as its MD with effect from April 1, 2020.
- Jyothy is the elder daughter of MP Ramachandran, the Founder, Chairman and MD of the company.
- Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner Ajoy Mehta has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of Maharashtra.
- He has replaced UPS Madan who has been named as the special advisor to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Sports Current Affairs
- The inaugural issue of world's 1st exclusive women's cricket magazine 'Criczone' was released with Indian team vie-captain Smriti Mandhana featuring as the cover story.
- Top international cricketers like Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur, Smiriti Mandhana alomg with overseas players like Danielle Wyatt, Sophie Devine attended the event which is held on the sidelines of the inaugural women's T20 challenge.
- Roger Federer has became the 2nd player in Open Era (since April 1968) to record 1,200 match wins.
- The 20-time Grand Slam champion saved two match points against France's Gaƫl Monfils before clinching the match after a final-set tiebreak to reach quarterfinals of Madrid Open.
