International Current Affairs
  • India and Vietnam reiterated the importance of building a peaceful and prosperous Indo-pacific region on the basis of respect for national sovereignty and international law.
    • During a delegation level talks in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi, the two sides expressed hope that the concerned countries are able to reach consensus on a code of conduct in the South China Sea.
    • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and his Vietnamese counterpart Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh discussed a whole range of areas of cooperation in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi. 
    • Note : Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu is on a 4 day official visit to Vietnam.
National Current Affairs
  • According to a recent UN report, Climate change and rising sea levels may eventually wipe out ‘The Sundarbans’, which is one of world’s last and largest tiger strongholds
    • The studies of report rely on climate change scenarios developed by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for its simulation models.
  • An expert panel of the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) has unanimously proposed to remove the contents of 'virginity test' from the curriculum of forensic medicine of MBBS course. 
    • The panel proposed this after a plea by a professor of forensic medicine in Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences claimed that virginity test has no scientific basis.

  • The TIME magazine has featured Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the cover of its May 20, 2019 edition. 
    • Titled 'India's Divider in chief', the cover carries a caricature of PM Modi.
Deaths
  • Noted novelist and Sahitya Akademi awardee Thoppil Mohamed Meeran (74) passed away.
    • Born in the coastal hamlet of Thaengaaipattinam in Kanniyakumari district on September 26, 1944, Mohamed Meeran authored the novels Oru Kadalora Graamaththin Kathai, Thuraimugam, Koonan Thoppu, Saaivu Naarkkaali and Anju Vannam Theru between 1988 and 2011.
    • Of these, Saaivu Naarkkaali (The Reclining Chair), released in 1995, bagged him the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 1997.
Science & Technology
  • South Korean multinational electronics company Samsung Electronics Co unveiled world’s highest-resolution image sensor, with 64 megapixels for smartphones, to meet the growing demand for mobile devices with better image quality.
    • This is a step to meet increasing demand for mobile devices with better image quality. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The 15th Finance Commission held a 2-day meeting with eminent economists, top executives of leading banks at RBI headquarters in Mumbai.
    • During this meeting, the Finance commission explored issues pertaining to state leadership, development, better governance and its connection with the market mechanism.

  • India's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) reduced the lending rates by a marginal 5 basis points across all tenors, effective 10 April.
    • The revised one-year marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR) stands at 8.50 percent down from 8.55 percent earlier, the bank said in a statement.
    • The lender has also cut interest rates on housing loans up to Rs 30 lakh by 10 bps.

  • Veteran actor Pankaj Kapur is going to release his debut novel 'Dopehri'.
    • This novel is based on a play of the same name which he wrote and directed several years ago.

  • UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appoints 17 global figures including Indian actress Dia Mirza and Alibaba chief Jack Ma as the new advocates to drive action and solidify global political will for the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals.
    • The new class of  Sustainable Development Goals, SDG, Advocates are influential public figures committed to raising awareness, inspiring greater ambition and pushing for faster action on the SDGs, which were adopted by world leaders on September 25, 2015.
    • These Advocates represent the universal character of the SDGs, hailing from governments, entertainment, academia, sport, business and activist organizations around the world.
