- Vice President Venkaiah Naidu held talks with Vietnamese Prime Minister Xuan Phuc in Hanoi yesterday.
- The two leaders discussed a wide range of issues and underscored the importance of strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations to ensure peace and security in the region.
- The Islamic State (IS) for the 1st time has claimed that it has established a “province” in India.
- The move underscores efforts by Isis to expand into new territories, forging ties with local militants after the fall of its “caliphate” in Iraq and Syria.
- Although, ISIS began claiming attacks against Indian security forces in Kashmir since November 2017 but without any branch affiliation.
- US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is on a visit to Brussels to discuss current pressing matters including Iran.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The Hinduja brothers have been named the UK's wealthiest people for the 3rd time, according to Sunday Times Rich List.
- Sri and Gopi Hinduja saw their wealth increase by £1.35 billion from last year to £22 billion (around ₹2 lakh crore).
- Note : The Hinduja Group was founded in Mumbai in 1914 and operates in fields including oil, banking, IT and property.
- Mumbai-born Brothers David and Simon Reuben secured 2nd place with a combined wealth of 18.66 billion pounds.
- They made fortune in scrap metal, property and carpets
- The richest person on 2018’s Times Rich List, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, founder of Ineos chemicals firm, slipped to 3rd rank in the list.
- Zimbabwe-born Valerie Moran became 1st black female entrepreneur ever to be ranked in the Times Rich List.
- The Supreme Court has said a person has no "right" to be represented by a lawyer in "in-house" proceedings initiated by banks or financial institutions to declare them willful defaulters.
- The question whether a default was "intentional, deliberate, and calculated" can be dealt with by the borrower or lender, the apex court said. A lawyer's assistance wasn't required, it added.
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has proposed to introduce a mobile application to help visually challenged citizens identify Indian currency notes, and has invited bids from technology firms for the same.
- Currently, intaglio printing-based identification marks on banknotes of ₹100 and above help the visually challenged recognise currency.
- US President Donald Trump ordered a tariff hike on almost all imports from China after the latest round of talks to end the trade war between the world's two largest economies, ended yesterday without a deal.
- Trump's latest move came less than a day after he ramped up punitive duties on 200 billion dollars worth of Chinese imports, raising them to 25 per cent from 10 per cent.
- The new increase applies to an even greater value of goods - put at about 300 billion dollars.
Science & Technology
- The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is going to launch India’s latest radar imaging satellite RISAT-2B on 22nd of this month.
- RISAT-2B is a modern radar imaging earth observation satellite.
- The satellite will be lifted off by the workhorse rocket PSLV-C46 in its 48th flight.
- It will be placed in an orbit of 555 km from the earth.
- ISRO has made provisions for the general public to view this launch from its recently opened Viewer’s Gallery in the spaceport.
- They can make online registration for viewing the launch from 5 days before the launch.
Awards & Honors
- 'Kamali', a short film on Tamil Nadu's 9-year-old skateboarder girl Kamali Moorthy, has qualified for the 2020 Academy Awards shortlist.
- The 24-minute film directed by filmmaker Sasha Rainbow from New Zealand won the Best Documentary Short at Atlanta Film Festival in April.
Sports Current Affairs
- Mumbai Indians became IPL champions for the 4th time after defeating Chennai Super Kings by one run in a thrilling final in Hyderabad last night.
- As the winners of the IPL 2019 final, Mumbai Indians will get a prize money of ₹20 crore.
- This season's runners-up Chennai Super Kings will receive ₹12.5 crore.
- Most Valuable Player will be awarded ₹10 lakh. The tournament's highest wicket-taker and highest run-scorer will also get ₹10 lakh each.
- Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the most successful wicket-keeper in the history of IPL by taking his dismissals tally to 132, surpassing his India teammate Dinesh Karthik.

- Hockey India announced that striker Rani Rampal will lead an 18-member Indian women's hockey team for the 3-match series against hosts Korea, starting on May 20.
- World number one Novak Djokovic won his 3rd Madrid Open title by defeating world number nine Stefanos Tsitsipas.
- With the victory, the 31-year-old Serbian tied world number two Rafael Nadal's record of winning most Masters 1000 trophies (33).
- This is Djokovic's second title of the season after his Australian Open triumph.
- Mercedes' British driver Lewis Hamilton clinched the title at the Spanish Grand Prix.
- Young Indian racer Jehan Daruvala, driving for Prema Racing, won the inaugural round of the FIA Formula 3 Championship, one of the support events to Formula One in Barcelona today.
- The 4th edition of the IAAF World Relays recently held at Yokohama, Japan.
- The 2-day biennial event offers a platform for the athletes to qualify for the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019.
- India competed in 4X400m relays (men, women and mixed relay).
- Both Indian men’s 4x400m teams and Indian women’s 4x400m teams finished at 17th position.
