- Today (14th August) is the Independence Day of Pakistan.
- Note : Pakistan celebrates it's Independence day a day before India because the British Viceroy Lord Mountbatten transferred power to Pakistan on August 14, 1947, so that he could be present in New Delhi the next day for India's Independence Day celebrations.

- The Supreme Court today accepted a proposal seeking to issue hologram-based coloured stickers for vehicles in Delhi based on the fuel used.
Awards & Honors
- Rajasthan's Jodhpur railway station was ranked the Cleanest station in the A1 Category in a cleanliness report released by the Ministry of Railways today.
- Jodhpur was followed by stations Jaipur and Tirupati in cleanliness in the A1 Category of railway stations.
- Note : Rajasthan's Marwar topped among the A Category railway stations, followed by Phulera and Warangal.
- Annie Zaidi was awarded the prestegious Hindu Playwright Award 2018 for her play 'Untitled-1'.
- The ₹2 lakh award for the best new unpublished and unperformed playscript in English was presented at the launch of the 14th edition of The Hindu Theatre Fest at the Taj Coromandel today.
Science & Technology
- SpaceX rival Arianespace is going to launch three heavy Indian satellites of ISRO over the next 9 months.
- The 1st satellite, scheduled for November, will be launched aboard Arianespace's Arian-5 rocket.
- The other two satellites will be launched in December this year and May next year.

- The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman approved procurement of 6 indigenously designed and manufactured Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) for Indian Navy.
- Note : DAC is Defence Ministry’s highest decision-making body on capital procurement of Indian Armed Forces (Army, Navy and Air Force).
- Iran has unveiled Fateh Mobin (Bright Conqueror) next generation short-range ballistic missile capable of striking targets on land and sea.
Recent Committees in News
- A recent report by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce, has called for different weightage to different sectors of the industry by credit rating agencies, to ensure that banks don't deprive the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) of credit.
- The observations came after the committee noted that the rules introduced by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to help banks to counter the non performing asset (NPA) problem have hit the MSMEs very hard.

- The Indian Rupee hit a record low of 70 against the US dollar for the first time today.
- This comes amid ongoing financial crisis in Turkey as its currency lira fell 45% against USD this year. .
- Allahabad Bank's MD and CEO Usha Ananthasubramanian was fired on her last day in office today, in relation to the PNB scam.
- She had served as the CEO and Managing Director of PNB from 2015 to 2017, and was named in the CBI chargesheet.
- Smitha V. Crishna, a third-generation heir of the Godrej family, ranked 1st in the Kotak Wealth Hurun-Leading Wealthy Women 2018 list with an estimated wealth of ₹ 37,570 crore.

New Appointments
- 1992 batch IAS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre, Ashish Kumar Bhutani has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY).
- Indian origin online transportation network company Ola has appointed former Google Europe COO Ben Legg as Managing Director of its UK operations.
- Justice Manjula Chellur took oath as Chairperson of Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (ATE), Ministry of Power.
- Prior to this appointment, she was Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.
Deaths
- Chhattisgarh Governor Balram Das Tandon (90) passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest.
- Tandon, who had previously served as the Deputy CM of Punjab, was appointed as the state Governor in July 2014.
