National Current Affairs
  • The last rites of the Former Prime Minister, Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee (93) are being performed at the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal, Delhi today.
    • The government announced 7 day state mourning throughout the country as a mark of respect. 
    • National flag will be flown at half mast throughout India.
    • Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, Sri Lanka's Acting Foreign Minister Lakshman Kiriella, Nepal's Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali, Pakistan's acting information minister Syed Zafar Ali and a senior minister from Afghanistan have arrived in New Delhi today to pay their last respects.
  • Punjab government started a ‘Tatkal sewa’ for property registration across the state.
    • Under this scheme, people can seek appointment for ‘tatkal’ (instant) registration for properties for an hour-long slot from 9 am to 10 am, with facilitation charges Rs. 5000.
Science & Technology
  • Jammu will be the 1st city in north India to get a full-fledged space technology research centre devoted to research, academics and post-graduation degree course. 
    • The centre will function under the aegis of the Central University Jammu and will be exclusive in nature.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) today launched UPI 2.0, an upgraded version of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). 
    • With UPI 2.0, customers can now link overdraft account to UPI in addition to current and savings account, and the transaction limit has been doubled to ₹2 lakh. 
    • UPI 2.0 also allows customers to check invoice before making a payment to the merchant.
  • The World Bank mandated Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) to issue world’s first blockchain-based bond
    • The Kangaroo bond, referring to foreign bonds issued in Australia in local currency, has been named bond-i, an acronym standing for Blockchain Offered New Debt Instrument.
    • Note : bond-i is also a reference to Bondi Beach, an iconic spot in Sydney).
  • Digital payments major Paytm today announced it had acquired Bengaluru-based savings management start-up, Balance Technology for an undisclosed amount.
    • The acquisition will help One97 Communications, which operates the Paytm brand, in further enhancing its user and merchant interface.
  • According to International Monetary Fund (IMF), Macau in China would overtake oil-rich Qatar with highest per-capita gross domestic product of any country or jurisdiction on earth, by 2020
    • Note : Macau is only place in China where casinos are legal and its gross domestic product has more than tripled from about $34,500 per capita in 2001.
Deaths
  • Aretha Franklin (76), the long-reigning Queen of Soul, died today. 
    • The singer is known for songs like 'Think' and 'I Say a Little Prayer'.
    • She won 18 Grammy awards and in 1987 and became the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Andhra Pradesh government signed an MoU with electronics company Holytech, to set up Holytech' plant in 75 acres land in Tirupati and Chittoor districts. 
    • This is first-of-its-kind facility in India, which will create 6000 direct job opportunities.
New Appointments
  • All India Football Federation senior vice president Subrata Dutta was today elected as a vice president of the newly formed South West Asian Football Federation (SWAFF) during its General Assembly in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The 118-year-old Davis Cup tournament will be changed into an 18-team, week-long event after International Tennis Federation (ITF) approved a proposal by a consortium that has pledged support of $3 billion over a 25-year-long duration. 
    • The current Davis Cup format is a knockout event played in February, July, September, ​and November at home and away venues around the globe.
  • Pakistani Batsman Nasir Jamshed has been banned for 10 years by Pakistan Cricket Board's Anti Corruption Tribunal for his involvement in the 2017 Pakistan Super League (PSL) spot-fixing scandal. 
  • India's Niki Kaliyanda Poonacha clincked his maiden Singles title in the $25,000 men's tennis event of 2018 ITF Men's Circuit (July–September) held at Jakarta, Indonesia.
    • The doubles title was won by Justin Barki (Indonesia) and Christopher Rungkat (Indonesia).
