International Current Affairs
  • The US state of Indiana has passed a resolution recognising the contributions of Sikhs across the state and the country
  • The United States has announced that it will open its embassy to Israel in Jerusalem on May 14 this year, coinciding with Israel's 70th Independence Day
    • Important Note : Breaking the 70 year old policy, the US in December 2017 became the world's first country to recognize the status of Jerusalem, which is claimed as the capital by both Israel and Palestine. 
  • India and Canada have agreed to work together against Sikh terror outfits Babbar Khalsa International and the International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF).  
    • The two countries will combat terrorism by cooperating in fields of security, and law enforcement among others.
  • The US Citizenship and Immigration Services has dropped the phrase 'Nation of Immigrants' from its mission statement.
  • The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) has entered into partnership with Department of Science and Technology (DST) to implement and execute the ASEAN India Research Training Fellowship (AIRTF)
National Current Affairs
  • American multinational technology company Google recently conducted a three-day 'Developer Students Club' Summit in Goa.
    • Aim of this Summit : To impart knowledge about latest technologies amongst students. 
  • The Maharashtra Women and Child Development Department has launched an online portal titled ‘Asmita scheme’ portal (https://mahaasmita.mahaonline.gov.in/) for people interested in sponsoring a year-long supply of sanitary pads for rural schoolgirls for ₹182.40
  • Madhya Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel  inaugurated the 44th edition of Khajuraho Dance Festival 2018 at Khajuraho temple, a UNESCO world heritage site in Chhatarpur district, Madhya Pradesh. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The 1st sale of Electoral Bonds will start from March 1, 2018 for period of 10 days at four main branches of State Bank of India (SBI) in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and New Delhi. 
    • These bonds will have a life of 15 days, and citizen of India or an entity incorporated or established in the country can purchase them.
    • Important Points to Note
    • India is the 1st country in the world to have such unique bonds for electoral funding. 
    • The electoral bonds scheme was announced in Union Budget 2017 with an aim for increasing transparency in political funding. 
  • India's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has the highest amount of wilful defaults amounting to ₹27,716 crore till December, 2017. 
    • The Punjab National Bank (PNB), which is under the scanner by top probing agencies for $1.77 billion alleged fraud by firms of jeweller Nirav Modi, stood at second place with wilful defaults of ₹12,574 crore. 
    • Bank of India is at 3rd spot with 314 wilful defaulters who owe ₹6,104 crore to the bank.
MOUs & Agreements
  • India has inked memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) for supporting its ‘programme based research support in addressing current and future global and local developmental challenges
Deaths
  • The mascot of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Kunwar Bai (106) passed away due to a prolonged illness. 
    • The state government selected her as the mascot after she sold off her goats to build toilets at her house
Sports Current Affairs
  • Virat Kohli today received the ICC Test Championship mace on behalf of Team India for the second consecutive year for being the number one Test team. 
    • India, who have been at the top since October 2016, retained the mace after winning the third Test against South Africa last month. 
    • India will also receive a cash award of $1 million.
  • Indian gymnast Aruna Budda Reddy has become the 1st Indian to win an individual medal at the Gymnastics World Cup
    • She achieved the feat by securing bronze in the women's vault event with 13.649 points to finish behind gold medallist Slovenia's Tjasa Kysslef and Australia's Emily Whitehead, who finished second.
  • Czech Republic's Ester Ledecka became the first woman to claim gold medals in two sports at a Winter Olympics after claiming her second one in a snowboarding event at the PyeongChang Winter Games.
