  • Today (19th July) is Burmese Martyrs' Day.
    • This day is observed to commemorate Gen. Aung San and seven other leaders of the pre-independence interim government (Thakin Mya, Ba Cho, Abdul Razak, Ba Win, Mahn Ba Khaing, Sao San Tun and Ohn Maung) all of whom were assassinated on this  day in 1947.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to visit Silicon Valley (California) during his trip to the United States in September this year, marking only the second time any Indian head of government will have traveled to California after Jawaharlal Nehru (1949).

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 46th Indian Labour Conference (ILC) at New Delhi today.

  • Today (18th July) is the Birth Anniversary of freedom fighter Mangal Pandey.
    • He was an Indian soldier who played a key part in events immediately preceding the outbreak of the Indian rebellion of 1857.
  • Welcoming the proposal to regulate domestic Internet call services provided by apps like WhatsApp and Viber, industry body Assocham has asked the government to expand the scope of regulation to all kind of communication services offered by over the top players.

  • According to the "Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India 2014", a report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 5,650 farmers committed suicide in the
    year 2014, with the maximum deaths being reported from Maharashtra, Telangana and Chhattisgarh. 
    • The highest incidents of suicides were in Maharashtra (45.5 per cent - 2,568 farmers), followed by Telangana (15.9 per cent - 898) and Madhya Pradesh (14.6 per cent - 826).
  • As part of efforts to boost road infrastructure for faster connectivity, the Centre is planning to start work on 10 world-class express highways, which will not only reduce travel time but also propel country's economic growth.
    • These express highways include Nagpur-Mumbai, Bangalore-Chennai, Baroda-Mumbai, Katra-Amritsar and Ludhiana-Delhi.

  • In a move aimed at boosting India's defence sector, 200 helicopters will be manufactured in India with Russian collaboration as part of intensification and diversification of their strategic ties.
    • Note : The agreement, reached recently, is one of the several new defence projects on which the two countries are working on, including under the ambit of 'Make in India' programme.

    • As part of government's initiative to broaden the tax base, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the apex policy making body of the I-T, this week activated all field formations of the department to achieve the goal with the Pune region being given the maximum target of bringing in over 10 lakh new assesses.
