International Current Affairs
  • Today (30th April) is International Jazz Day.
    • This day is  organized by UNESCO to celebrate “the virtues of jazz as an educational tool, and a force for peace, unity, dialogue and enhanced cooperation among people.”
  • Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman attended the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers' conclave held at Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan.
    • During the conclave, ways to further boost defence and security cooperation among the member countries in the wake of evolving security challenges in the region were discussed.
    • On the sidelines, Ms Sitharaman held bilateral meetings with her Chinese and Russian counterparts and Chief of General Staff of Kyrgyz Armed Forces. 
    • Key bilateral defence issues, including defence co-operation, were discussed.
    • Note : India became a full member of the SCO in 2017.
  • Current Emperor of Japan Akihito today became the 1st Japanese Emperor to step down from the throne in more than 200 years. 
    • The 85-year-old was given legal permission to abdicate after saying he felt unable to fulfil his role because of his age and declining health. 
    • Note : Akihito's son, Crown Prince Naruhito, will ascend the Chrysanthemum throne tomorrow, beginning a new era.
  • Lebanon’s capital Beirut has set a new Guinness World Record for most number of national flags displayed in one city for 24 hours.
    • By raising a total of 26,852 Lebanese flags for 24 hours Beirut broke the record of New York’s Waterloo of raising 25,599 flags.

  • Today (29th April) is International Dance Day / World Dance Day.
    • The day was introduced in 1982 by the International Dance Committee of the UNESCO International Theatre Institute.
    • The date was chosen to commemorate the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, who was born in 1727, a French dancer and ballet master and a great reformer of dance. 
  • Today is the "Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare".
    • This day is officially recognised by the United Nations (UN) and has been celebrated since 2005.
  • Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is on a 3 day isit to Bishkek (capital of Kyrgyzstan) to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers' Meet.
    • During this visit, she held a bilateral meeting with her Chinese counterpart  General Wei Fenghe today. 
    • During this meet, the SCO Defence Ministers will explore ways to further boost defence and security cooperation among the member countries in the wake of evolving security challenges in the region.

  • The 2nd Belt and Road Forum (BRF) was held in Beijing, China. 
    • It serves as stocktaking exercise for China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). 
    • It saw participation of 126 countries and 29 international organisations, increase from 60 countries and international organisations seen in in first edition of BRF 2017. 
    • Chinese President Xi Jinping’s chaired leaders’ roundtable, high-level meeting and thematic forum in this edition of three day BRF event.
    • Note : India did not participate in this edition as well as in first edition of BRF.

    • Note : The 1st sound data transmitted was American actor-singer Dean Martin's song 'Volare'.
New Appointments
  • Romania's Doru Isac has replaced Savio Medeira as the new technical director of the Indian Football Team
    • Savio Medeira had been serving as the technical director since Scott O'Donnell resigned from the post
Sports Current Affairs
  • In shooting  Abhishek Verma secured India's 5th Olympic quota place by winning the 10m air pistol Gold medal at the ISSF World Cup at Beijing, China today. 
    • He clinched the top spot with a total score of 242.7.
    • This is India's fifth 2020 Tokyo Olympic quota after Anjum Moudgil and Apurvi Chandela (10m air rifle women), Saurabh Choudhary (10m Air Pistol men) and Divyansh had secured berths in the earlier World Cups and last year's World Championship.
  • The BCCI has recommended Indian men's cricket team all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, fast bowlers Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, and Indian women's cricket team spinner Poonam Yadav for the Arjuna Award
    • Bumrah is currently the world number one ODI bowler, while Jadeja is the world number three Test all-rounder. 
    • Poonam Yadav is ranked second in women's T20I rankings for bowlers.
  • Australia's 31-year-old umpire Claire Polosak has become the 1st ever woman to officiate in a men's ODI. 
    • Polosak achieved the feat after taking the field in the final of the World Cricket League Division 2 between Oman and Namibia today. 
  • India bagged a Gold and two Silver medals at the Asian Boxing Championships in Bangkok today.
    • With this, India has won 13 medals, including two gold, four silver and seven bronze.

    • Today (26th April) is World Intellectual Property Day.
      • The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to "raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life" and "to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe".
      • 26 April was chosen as the date to celebrate this day because it coincides with the date on which the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization entered into force in 1970.
      • Theme of World Intellectual Property Day 2019 : "Reach for Gold: IP and Sports."
    National Current Affairs
    • A 35-member women police team named 'Sthree Shakthi' was launched in Andhra Pradesh's Visakhapatnam today. 
      • The team, which has woman ASIs, head constables, police constables and home guards, was provided with 25 vehicles and trained in swimming, driving and self-defence for one month. Andhra DGP RP Thakur said, "Our prime concern is to ensure safety to women."
    • In a first, the Indian Army began recruiting women jawans by releasing an advertisement calling for women to join as Soldier General Duty (Women Military Police)
      • This comes after the Defence Ministry in January announced the decision to induct women as jawans in the Army.
      • Note : Until now, women were being recruited in the Army in officer ranks.

      • He said the North Korean leader's visit  to Russia  will help the two countries  to better understand how  to resolve the situation on the Korean peninsula.
    • The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution on sexual violence in conflicts that condemns the use of rape as a weapon of war.
    Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
    • US tech giant Microsoft has briefly topped $1 trillion in market capitalisation for the 1st time after beating its quarterly earnings estimates.  
      • With this, Microsoft became world's 3rd trillion dollar company.
      • Note : Apple and Amazon are the only companies to have previously cracked the trillion-dollar milestone.
    • In the backdrop of the US refusal to extend the sanctions waiver for India to import crude from Iran, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has taken steps necessary steps to end the imports from Iran.
      • Even though India has urged the US to restore the sanction waivers it has decided to not to proceed with the purchase as the oil trade cannot happen in anticipation.
    Recent Committees in News
    • The Economic Capital Framework committee tasked with framing guidelines for the transfer of Reserve Bank of India (RBI)'s surplus reserves is going to submit its report by June end.
      • The panel was formed in December 2018. 
      • Head of this panel :  Bimal Jalan (ex-RBI Governor)
      • The six-member panel includes RBI Deputy Governor NS Vishwanathan and Economic Affairs Secretary SC Garg.
    MOUs & Agreements
    • The United Nations and the European Union (EU) have signed a joint framework aimed at strengthening partnership in counter-terrorism efforts
      • The framework was enacted on the occasion of the second EU-UN high-level political dialogue on Counter-Terrorism that was held in New York.
    Awards & Honors
    • The Information and Broadcasting Ministry announced that the 66th National Film Awards will be declared after the general elections in compliance with the Model Code of Conduct. 
      • The ministry said in a statement that the power of media must not affect the level playing field during elections. 
      • Note : The National Film Awards are generally declared in April and presented in May every year.
    Sports Current Affairs
    • Asian Games bronze medal winning Indian middle-distance runner P U Chitra won Gold medal in women’s 1500m at the Asian Athletics Championships in Doha. 
      • With this victory Chitra also qualified for the World Championships, which will be held later this year.
      • Asian Games silver medallist Dutee Chand clinched the bronze medal in 200-metre sprint.

      • US President Donald Trump has accepted Queen Elizabeth's invitation to make a state visit to the UK from June 3-5. 
        • Trump will also hold a meeting with UK PM Theresa May. 
        • Trump's state visit is an "opportunity to strengthen our already close relationship and to discuss how we can build on these ties in the years ahead", May said.
      • Nepal’s President Bidya Devi Bhandari has left on a 9-day state visit to China
        • During the visit she will attend the 2nd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing.

      • Today (24th April) is National Panchayati Raj Day.
        • This date marks a defining moment in the history of decentralization of political power to the grassroots level.
        • Note : The Constitution (73rd Amendment) Act, 1992 that came into force with effect from 24th April, 1993 has institutionalized Panchayati Raj through the village, Intermediate and District level Panchayats.
      • The Union home ministry, in an attempt to improve investigations into cases of rape and sexual assault, has distributed more than 3,100 special kits for collecting blood and semen samples in addition to other evidence in different states and Union Territories (UT).

      • US President Donald Trump is going to visit Japan next month and become the 1st world leader to meet Crown Prince Naruhito after he's crowned Japan's new emperor on May 1. 
        • Naruhito's 85-year-old father, Emperor Akihito, is ending his three-decade reign on April 30 by abdicating.
        • During his visit, Trump will also hold a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
      • Egyptians are voting in a referendum that aims to cement the rule of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the former coup leader. 
        • The 3-day plebiscite is expected to approve sweeping constitutional changes that will extend Sisi's term until at least 2024.
      • Malaysia has resumed a China-backed rail link project after the Chinese contractor agreed to cut the construction cost by one third to 10.6 billion US dollars.
        • The Malaysian government said it will also take up a multibillion-dollar property and transportation project in Kuala Lumpur involving a Chinese state company, calling it a contribution to China's global "Belt and Road" infrastructure initiative.

        • The two countries will be deploying their aircraft carriers, INS Vikramaditya with its MiG-29K fighters and FNS Charles de Gaulle with its Rafale-M naval jets, and other warships for the “Varuna” exercise off Goa and Karwar from May 1.
      • North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is going to visit Russia for his first meeting with President Vladimir Putin later this month.
        • Kim is visiting Russia on Putin's invitation. 
        • The meeting between Kim and Putin comes as nuclear talks between North Korea and the US have stalled since the failed negotiations in Hanoi earlier this year.

      • Egypt's Parliament today passed amendments to the Constitution extending the president's term in office from 4 to 6 years and allow for a maximum of two terms. 
        • The amendments would also give the president more power over the judiciary and further increase the military's role in politics.

      • The Supreme Court has banned all mining activities along the Kaziranga National Park and catchment area of rivers originating in Karbi Anglong Hills in Assam. 
        • The apex court has also banned new construction activities on private lands which form part of the nine identified animal corridors. 
        • The ban was ordered as per the recommendations of the Central Empowered Committee (CEC).

        • The Ministry of Commerce and Industries has stated that without banning domestic sale and manufacturing of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) through law, it will be an infringement of global trade norms to put an import ban.

      • The nation is paying homage to the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre on the centenary of the incident today. 
        • On this day (13th April) in the year 1919, hundreds of people were killed by troops under British Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer, during a peaceful meeting at the park.
        • President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to the martyrs of the incident.
        • The Vice President has released a Commemorative Coin and Commemorative Postage Stamp.
        • British High Commissioner to India Dominic Asquith has visited the Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial in Amritsar and paid tribute to those martyred by British forces. 
          • "The events of Jallianwala Bagh 100 years ago today reflect a shameful act in British-Indian history. We deeply regret what happened and the suffering caused," Asquith wrote in the visitors' book at the memorial.

      • The United Arab Emirates (UAE) today announced that India will be the Guest of Honour country at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) 2019, to be held from 24th to 30th April 2019. 
        • Aim of ADIBF 2019 : To highlight the UAE’s rich heritage, showcasing its authenticity and modernity, as well as its cultural and literary output.
        • The Indian Pavilion will host Indian writers, authors and literary scholars who will serve as ambassadors for the literature and art of their country.
        • India’s participation in the fair is expected to attract significant increase in the number of visitors with various events and activities which will be held throughout the entire duration of ADIBF.

      • The 3-day exercise, ‘Bold Kurukshetra–2019’, is being conducted between India and Singapore at Babina Cantonment (Jhansi).
        • The two countries had signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen the defence ties between Indian Military and Singapore Armed Forces in November, 2017. 
        • As per the agreement, the Singapore military would undergo training and participate in firing exercise with their Indian counterpart. 
        • This will be the 12th in the series.
        • Aim of Bold Kurukshetra 2019 : To develop military technology, boost maritime security and bolster the nations’ fight against terrorism.
      • 43 days after the Indian Air Force struck Jaish-e-Mohammed training camps in Balakot, Pakistan military today took a group of international media persons and foreign diplomats on a tour of the site. 
        • The visit lasted for about 20 minutes and they were shown three ditches on the way where Pakistan claimed IAF dropped the bombs.
      • UK PM Theresa May expressed regret over the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and called it a shameful scar on British Indian history. 
        • However, UK's Opposition called for "a clear and unequivocal apology" for the massacre. 
        • Around 1,000 people were killed after British troops opened fire on a peaceful gathering in Amritsar on April 13, 1919.
      • The UK and the European Union have agreed to extend Brexit until October 31. 
        • The decision was taken at an emergency meeting in Brussels yesterday where the EU leaders agreed to offer British Prime Minister Theresa May a six-month extension.
      • New Zealand Parliament has voted to ban all types of semi-automatic weapons and assault rifles following the Christchurch attacks.
        • It is expected to become law within the next few days after receiving royal assent from the Governor General.
      • India has built a 25-bed maternity hospital in Nepal
        • The hospital has been built under the Government of India's Small Development Projects Scheme.
      National Current Affairs
      • Voting is underway in the 1st phase of general election in India. 
        • Polling is being held in 91 Parliamentary constituencies, spread over 18 states and two Union Territories. 
        • Simultaneous voting is also taking place to 175-member Andhra Pradesh Assembly, 32-seat Sikkim Assembly, 60-member Arunachal Pradesh Assembly and for 28 of 147 Assembly seats in Odisha.
        • All 25 parliamentary constituencies of Andhra Pradesh, 17 of Telangana, 8 in Uttar Pradesh, five each of Assam and Uttarakhand, four each in Bihar and Odisha, 2 each of Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, and one each of Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep are going to polls in this phase.
      • In an annual tradition, Andhra Pradesh's Kairuppala village in Kurnool district, organised its 'Pidakala War', which involves two sides throwing cow dung at each other. 
        • The event, which signifies a mythological Hindu dispute, took place a day after the Ugadi festival. 
        • Villagers believe that the ritual brings health, prosperity, and rain to the villages.
      • The Supreme Court today imposed a fine of 20 lakh rupees on the West Bengal government for imposing a 'virtual' ban on the public screening of the satirical film Bhobishyoter Bhoot in the state.
        • The court ordered that the fine amount shall be given to producers and cinema hall owners as compensation for violation of their right to freedom of speech and expression. 
      • RailWire Wi-Fi by RailTel is now live at 1600 railway stations across the country, with Santacruz railway station in Mumbai becoming the 1600th station to become a RailWire Wi-Fi zone.
        • RailTel Corporation, a "Mini Ratna (category-I)" PSU, is one of the largest neutral telecom infrastructure providers in the country owning a pan-India optic fibre network on exclusive Right of Way (ROW) along Railway track.
        • RailWire is a retail Broadband initiative of the RailTel, which envisages extending broadband and application services to the public.
      • President Ram Nath Kovind launched ‘Veer Parivar App’, a mobile application for families of CRPF personnel killed in the line of duty. 
        • The application will act as an interface between the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) authorities and the next of kin of the slain personnel.

      • WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arrested in London after his diplomatic asylum was withdrawn by Ecuador, in whose embassy he had been staying for the past 7 years. 
        • Assange faces several cases in the US, Sweden and the UK.

      • Telugu poet K Siva Reddy has been selected for Saraswati Samman for the year 2018.
        • He is being honored with this prestegious award for his collection of poetry titled 'Pakkaki Ottigilite'.
        • The award carries a cash prize of  15 lakh rupees, a citation and a plaque.
      • The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) was awarded the distinction of “Public Water Agency of the Year” by Global Water Intelligence.
        • The Global Water Awards are presented at the Global Water Summit, the major business conference for the water industry worldwide.
        • The awards recognise excellence across the international water industry and reward those initiatives in the water, waste water, and desalination sectors, which bring remarkable improvements in the lives of people.
      • India’s education technology startup ‘Dost Education’ has bagged a $25,000 Next Billion Edtech Prize 2019.
        • Ubongo (Tanzania) and PraxiLabs (Egypt) were the other two winners of the prize.

      • Team India opener Smriti Mandhana has been named as the Wisden Almanack's 'Leading Women's Cricketer of the Year'

        • Today (10th April) is World Homoeopathy Day.
          • Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine that uses small, highly diluted doses of natural substances to trigger the bodies own healing abilities.
          • Homeopathy Day is observed every year to pay tribute to Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann, founder and father of Homeopathy System of Medicine.
          • Note : World Homeopathy Awareness Week is celebrated annually between April 10th and April 16th.
          • On this occasion, the Central Council for Research in Homeopathy (CCRH) is organizing a 2-day convention in New Delhi. 
          • The council will take stock of the challenges faced and formulate future strategies for the development of Homeopathy in the country. 
          • Theme of the convention : Linking research with education and clinical practice.
        • Sri Lanka has opened a new railway line.
          • The 26.75-kilometre railway extension connects the cities of Matara and Beliatta in the southern part of the island nation. 
          • The railway line has been built with Chinese assistance under China's Belt and Road Initiative.
          • Note : This railway line is the 1st to be constructed since the independence of the country in 1948.
        National Current Affairs
        • The Election Commission has banned the release of PM Modi's biopic starring Vivek Oberoi till the Lok Sabha elections, a day before its release.
          • It ordered that any biopic material, which has the potential to disturb the level playing field during the elections, should not be displayed in electronic media including cinematograph during the operation of Model Code of Conduct.
        • Registration for Kailash Manasarovar Yatra 2019 has begun from today. 
          • External Affairs Ministry said in a release that the Yatra is scheduled from 8th June to 8th September this year.
        Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
        • The government has retained the interest rate for General Provident Fund (GPF), Contributory Provident Fund and other related schemes at 8 per cent for the first quarter of current financial year.
          • The interest rate on these funds was at 8 per cent in January-March quarter of 2018-19 and government kept it unchanged for April to June for 2019-20.
        • Adani Enterprises has received the Australian government's approval for Groundwater Management Plan for the controversial Carmichael coal mine
          • The project still needs nine further approvals from the Federal and Queensland state governments. 
          • It has led to concerns over destruction of an endangered bird's habitat, potential harm to the Great Barrier Reef and climate change.
        • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has cut India's growth forecast for 2019-20 from 7.5% to 7.3%, citing loss of momentum. 
          • It has further projected the country to grow at 7.5% in 2020-21, supported by the continued recovery of investment and robust consumption. 
        • Amid heightened tensions with Pakistan, Indian government has cleared the procurement of 464 T-90 tanks from Russia in a deal worth over Rs 13,500 crore.
          • Under the new deal, the tanks would be provided to the Armoured Corps of the force which will use them for deployment along the border with Pakistan.
        Science & Technology
        • Scientists have captured the 1st direct image of a black hole, using Event Horizon Telescope observations of the center of the galaxy M87, 55 million light-years from the Earth. 
          • The image shows the event horizon, a bright ring formed as light bends in the intense gravity around the black hole that is 6.5 billion times more massive than the Sun.
        • Nepal is sending a team of government-appointed climbers up Mount Everest, the world's tallest peak, to remeasure its height
          • Scientists suspect the 2015 earthquake in Nepal may have altered the mountain's height, with a possible shift in its position. 
          • The official height of Mount Everest is 8,848 metres (29,028 feet), which was measured by the Survey of India in 1956.

        • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved proposals of the Department of Financial Services (DFS), providing new postings for various Public Sector Banks (PSBs).
          • R A Sankara Narayanan has been appointed as the new MD & CEO of Canara Bank
          • Karnam Sekar has been appointed as the new chief of Indian Overseas Bank (IOB)
          • Murali Ramaswami has been appointed as the new Executive Director of Bank of Baroda (amalgamated entity)
          • Rajesh Kumar Yaduvanshi has been appointed as the new Executive Director of Punjab National Bank
          • Y Nageswara Rao has been appointed as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) and whole time director in Syndicate Bank
        • Benjamin Netanyahu is likely to win the Israeli parliamentary elections, securing a possible record 5th term as the Prime Minister after forming a coalition.
        Sports Current Affairs
        • Team India captain Virat Kohli has been named as the Wisden Almanack's 'Leading Cricketer of the Year' for the 3rd straight time. 
        • Shot-putter Manpreet Kaur, who won gold in 2017 Asian Championships, has been banned for 4 years by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for failing four dope tests in 2017.

          • London has become the world's 1st city to launch a 24x7 Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), inside which vehicles will have to meet emission standards or face a charge. 
            • Most vehicles which aren't compliant will have to pay £12.50 for entering the area each day, in addition to the congestion charge, in a bid to tackle air pollution and congestion.
          National Current Affairs
          • Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is celebrating its 54th Valour Day today. 
            • On this day (April 9) in the year 1965, a small contingent of 2nd Battalion of CRPF successfully fought and repulsed an attack by a Pakistani Brigade on Sardar Post in the Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, eliminating 34 Pakistani soldiers and capturing four alive. 
            • Never in the history of military battles have a handful of policemen fought back a full-fledged infantry Brigade in such a manner. 
            • In this conflict, six valiant CRPF men also attained martyrdom. 
            • As a tribute to the brave men of the Force, 9th April is befittingly celebrated as “Valour Day” in the Force.
