International Current Affairs
  • Today (26th April) is World Intellectual Property Day.
    • The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to "raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life" and "to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe".
    • 26 April was chosen as the date to celebrate this day because it coincides with the date on which the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization entered into force in 1970.
    • Theme of World Intellectual Property Day 2019 : "Reach for Gold: IP and Sports."
National Current Affairs
  • A 35-member women police team named 'Sthree Shakthi' was launched in Andhra Pradesh's Visakhapatnam today. 
    • The team, which has woman ASIs, head constables, police constables and home guards, was provided with 25 vehicles and trained in swimming, driving and self-defence for one month. Andhra DGP RP Thakur said, "Our prime concern is to ensure safety to women."
  • In a first, the Indian Army began recruiting women jawans by releasing an advertisement calling for women to join as Soldier General Duty (Women Military Police)
    • This comes after the Defence Ministry in January announced the decision to induct women as jawans in the Army.
    • Note : Until now, women were being recruited in the Army in officer ranks.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Supreme Court has directed the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to disclose its inspection reports on banks to allow people to assess their health. 
    • The order was the "last opportunity" to avoid initiation of contempt proceedings against Governor Shaktikanta Das, the court ruled. 
  • India's domestic crude oil production plunged over 4% in 2018-19, registering its 7th  consecutive yearly fall.
  • Meat processor JBS has announced that its Seara processed foods unit became the 1st company in Brazil authorised by India to sell chicken products in the Asian nation. 
New Appointments
  • Former Indian Army Chief General (Retired) Dalbir Singh Suhag has been appointed as India's next High Commissioner to the island nation of Seychelles
    • He was the Army Chief from August 1, 2014, to December 31, 2016.
  • Supreme Court judge Indu Malhotra was appointed as the new member of the panel probing sexual harassment charges against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, after Justice NV Ramana opted to recuse himself. 
    • Now the 3-member panel has 2 female judges, Indu Malhotra and Indira Banerjee, and it is led by Justice SA Bobde.
Science & Technology
  • National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA’s) InSight lander spacecraft has detected what’s believed to be a “marsquake” on the Red Planet. 
    • NASA scientists are still working to confirm the source of the faint trembling.
Awards & Honors
  • The 2nd edition of Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize 2019 was awarded to author Rana Dasgupta for his 2010 novel “Solo” which is a tale of estrangement and the ultimate failure of material existence. 
    • An amount of $10,000, a Tagore statue and a certificate for contribution to literature will be given to him. 
  • Ex-South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis was bestowed with Order of Ikhamanga in Silver by South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa
    • Kallis, who played 166 Tests, 328 ODIs and 25 T20Is was honoured for his contribution to cricket. 
Sports
  • Amateur boxer Amit Panghal claimed India's 1st Gold medal at the ongoing Asian Boxing Championships by defeating South Korea's Kim Inkyu in a unanimous decision in the 52kg category. 
  • Indian wrestlers Divya Kakran and Manju Kumari won Bronze medals at Asian Wrestling Championships.
  • Umpire Sundaram Ravi is the only Indian among 22 match officials chosen to adjudicate matches in the 2019 World Cup.
  • India's 16-year-old Saurabh Chaudhary and 17-year-old Manu Bhaker won Gold in the 10m Air Pistol mixed team event at the ISSF World Cup in Beijing.
