International Current Affairs
  • The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) voted unanimously voted for the resolution to completely end its peacekeeping operations in Haiti on October 15.
    • The resolution also called for establishing a political mission to support government efforts to promote order and development in Haiti situated in Latin America.
National Current Affairs
  • Different harvest festivals being celebrated in several parts of India today.
  • They are Baisakhi, Odia New Year Maha Vishuba Sankranti, Tamil New Year Puthandu.
    • In Assam, Bohag Bihu is being celebrated across the state with traditional fervour and enthusiasm.
  • India is paying homage to the architect of the Indian Constitution Dr BR Ambedkar on his 128th birth anniversary. 
  • The Ministry of Commerce and Industries has urged the Health Ministry to frame law banning manufacture and sale of e-cigarettes in the country as in the absence of the domestic legislation, it would not be possible to put a blanket ban on its imports.
    • The Ministry of Commerce and Industries has stated that without banning domestic sale and manufacturing of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) through law, it will be an infringement of global trade norms to put an import ban.
Science & Technology
  • The world's largest airplane weighing nearly 2,26,800 kilograms with a 385-foot wingspan took its 1st ever flight today in Mojave, California. 
    • Built by Stratolaunch, a company launched by Microsoft's late Co-founder Paul Allen in 2011, it's designed to launch rockets into orbit from the air. 
    • The 6-engine, dual-fuselage plane is designed to fly to an altitude of 35,000 feet.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have signed an MoU to map, validate and protect smaller wetlands in the coastal region and restore them through coastal livelihood programmes.
    • Smaller wetlands (which were smaller than 2.25 hectares) cover an area of more than 5 lakh hectares across the country, with Kerala alone having as many as 2,592 such wetlands.
Awards & Honors
  • The 2019 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Prize has been awarded to 2 Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo
    • The jury has recognised their exceptional courage in reporting on alleged human rights violations in the Myanmar’s state of Rakhine.
  • Alice G. Vaidyan, Chairman and Managing Director of the General Insurance Corporation (GIC) of India, India’s reinsurance major, has been awarded the Freedom of the City of London in recognition of her work to promote insurance ties between India and the UK.
    • Note : Alice G. Vaidyan was the first lady officer to assume the post of Chairman-cum-Managing Director of General Insurance Corporation of India.
Deaths
  • Tamil actor and AIADMK leader J K Ritheesh (46) passed away following a heart attack.
    • He was last seen in the Tamil film 'LKG', which released in February this year.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Hong Kong’s equity market has overtaken Japan to be the world’s 3rd largest in value, behind only the U.S. and mainland China
    • This is due to the rebound witnessed in Hong Kong stocks after their worst year since 2011.
New Appointments
  • A new government for the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority has been sworn-in today.
    • President Mahmoud Abbas picked Mohammed Ishtayeh as the new Prime Minister of the country. 
    • A longtime adviser to Abbas and a senior member of his Fatah party, Ishtayeh and his 24-member cabinet took the oath of office at Abbas' headquarters in Ramallah.

Sports Current Affairs
  • Mercedes' British driver Lewis Hamilton today won Formula One history's 1,000th race after claiming his 6th victory at the Chinese Grand Prix
  • India's Meena Kumari clinched the Gold medal in the 54 kg event at the Boxing World Cup in Cologne. S
  • KXIP opener Chris Gayle has become the 1st cricketer to score 100 50-plus scores in T20 cricket history
  • India's 15-member squad for Cricket World Cup 2019 will be announced at a press conference in Mumbai tomorrow.
    • The press conference will precede a meeting between the 5-man national selection committee led by MSK Prasad, India captain Virat Kohli and chief coach Ravi Shastri.
