International Current Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a memorial in the honour of the victims of two Air India crashes at the foothills of Mont Blanc in France. 
    • Several Indians, including Homi J Bhabha, regarded as the father of India's nuclear programme, were killed in the crashes. 
  • Modi today met with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan
    • Both leaders discussed the full spectrum of the strong India-UAE partnership
    • To mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, a commemorative stamp was jointly released by Mr Modi and the Crown Prince at the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi.
    • Later Modi has left for Bahrain on a 2-day state visit. 
      • This will be the 1st ever Prime Ministerial visit from India to Bahrain.   
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched RuPay in UAE.
    • With this, UAE became the 1st Middle Eastern country with the Indian card network
    • 3 banks in UAE will soon start issuing RuPay card and 15 business groups have pledged to accept them as a mode of payment.
  • US President Donald Trump has announced to raise the tariffs on Chinese imports amid the escalating trade war. 
    • US tariffs on Chinese goods worth $250 billion will increase from 25% to 30%, while the tariffs on $300-billion Chinese products will be raised from 10% to 15%. 
    • This comes after China announced tariffs on US products worth $75 billion.
  • Recent announcements of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman :
    • Additional ₹20,000-crore liquidity support for Housing Finance Companies (HFCs) by National Housing Bank (NHB), taking the overall support in recent weeks to ₹30,000 crore. 
    • The government will release ₹70,000 crore recapitalisation for state-run banks immediately as announced in the Budget.
      • Sitharaman further said the government will make all pending GST refunds to MSMEs within 30 days.
    • Enhanced surcharge on foreign portfolio investors registered as trusts, introduced in the Budget, will be rolled back following a backlash. 
      • The Budget announced triggered a market selloff with FPIs pulling out about ₹12,418 crore from the equity market in July. 
      • The surcharge on domestic equity investors has also been rolled back.
  • Moody's today cut India's GDP growth forecast to 6.2% for 2019 calendar year, from the previous estimation of 6.8%.
    • It reduced the 2020 GDP growth forecast to 6.7%.

  • The United Arab Emirates (UAE) today conferred its highest civilian award 'Order of Zayed' on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Deaths
  • Senior BJP leader and former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley (66) passed away.  
    • One of the prominent leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP), Arun Jaitley became the Finance Minister & Minister of Corporate Affairs in the Narendra Modi government in 2014. 
    • He also served as a member to the Board of Governors of Asian Development Bank (ADB)
  • US industrialist David Koch (79), who ran Koch Industries with his brother Charles Koch, died today. 
    • Koch, whose wealth Bloomberg estimates at $59 billion, was a philanthropist and a major financier of conservative causes and political candidates.
Sports Current Affairs
  • B Sai Praneeth has become the 1st Indian male shuttler in 36 years to secure a medal in the BWF World Championships
    • He achieved the feat by reaching the semi-finals by defeating Jonatan Christie of Indonesia. 
    • Important Note : Prakash Padukone was the 1st Indian to win a men’s singles World Championships medal, a bronze, in the 1983 edition.
  • World number five P V Sindhu has become the 1st ever Indian to reach 3 straight Badminton World Championships finals
    • She achieved the feat by defeating world number three Chen Yu Fei  in the semi-final today. 
    • Note : Sindhu had lost the finals in 2017 and 2018 to Nozomi Okuhara and Carolina Marin, respectively.
